âWhatâs wrong, Madam?â Avaâs eyebrows rose. Her eyes blinked firmly.
âI just remembered that I havenât officially introduced myself.â Vivian stepped forward and held out her hand. Her smile, which was usually graceful, now seemed sweet. âIâm Vivian Bell. Jeremyâs mother.â
Ava shook her hand with awkward movements. âIâm Ava Connor.â
âHave you been a nurse long?â Vivian hadnât let go of Avaâs hand. The girl grew stiffer.
âFour years. Is that long?â
âNo wonder you look so experienced. Iâm lucky youâre here to look after Melanie.â Vivian patted the back of Avaâs hand. The girl almost frowned, uncomfortable.
âIâm just doing my job, Maâam.â
Ava tried to pull her hand away, but Vivian held back. Jeremy noticed that. He also wondered how long his mother would hold Avaâs hand.
âSo,â Jeremy cleared his throat, âshall we go now? I have to talk to
Sean before he leaves.â
âThe man who escorted my mother? Ava raised an eyebrow. âHe
wants to leave?â
Jeremy nodded. âHe has to go home soon. He wants to celebrate New Year with his family.â
Avaâs face suddenly fell. Worry clouded her eyes.
âBut you donât need to worry,â Jeremy continued quickly. âThe owner of the hospital is a friend of ours. He promised to ensure your

motherâs safety.â
âYour brother said that man could defeat all the hospital security officers?â
Jeremy nodded stiffly. âYes, but if the entire crew is alert, your
motherâs safety will still be guaranteed. You canât ask Sean to sacrifice New Yearâs moments with his family, right? Besides, Sophia doesnât know your motherâs latest location.â
Ava sighed faintly. âThatâs right. He also has a family to look after,â she muttered, looking down for a moment.
âThen, Mrs. Bell,â Ava replied, holding Vivianâs hand, âI have to go now. If thereâs anything with Mrs. Harris, please call us.â
Vivian smiled wider. âNothing will happen. Go. Jeremy will accompany you. Send my greetings to your mother.â
Ava nodded. As soon as Vivian let go of her hand, she walked
towards the front door.
âMom, Iâll be gone for a moment.â Jeremy pressed his cheek against
Vivianâs.
âI donât mind if you take your time. Whatâs important is that you get back with Ava. Donât leave her alone, hmm?â
Jeremy snorted slightly. âPlease donât exaggerate it, Mom. Sheâs nobody.â
Before Vivian could argue, he walked after Ava. Vivian could only
shake her head at her son.
âThat child. Frank and Philip have already found a partner. Is he still not moved to approach women? Ava could be the right choice.â
Jeremy knew exactly what was going through his motherâs mind. Therefore, in the car, he glanced at Ava several times.

Ava looked calm. She stared at the road with a flat expression. It was difficult to read what was in her heart or mind, until suddenly, she turned her head and made Jeremy flinch.
âAre you done?â
Jeremy blinked as he gripped the steering wheel tighter. âDone what?â
He raised his eyebrows to appear confused.
âObserving me. Do you still have the same opinion of me? Iâm a criminal, far from your taste?â
Jeremyâs breath suddenly hitched. His train of thought was stuck, having trouble processing Avaâs bluntness.
âIt turns out,â Jeremy let out a quick sigh, âyou were eavesdropping on
my conversation with my mother?â
âI was walking behind you guys. Of course I heard.â
Ava buried her back deeper into the backrest. Her expression remained flat even though her tone was a little awkward.
âActually,â she sighed, âI donât care what you think of me. But your mother seems to have expectations of me. Can you tell her not to misunderstand me? I feel uncomfortable.â
Jeremy snorted in disbelief. Feeling uncomfortable, he pulled over the car. âOkay, I know youâre in a rush to see your mother, but we need to get this straight first.â
Ava nodded. Her palm rose briefly, letting Jeremy to speak.
âIâm not interested in you at all, and I donât think you are either.â
Ava nodded. âThatâs right.â
âMy mother behaved like that because of her instinct as a parent who wanted to see her son find a partner. So, she considered any woman

as an option.â
Avá repeated her head movements. âI know. Thatâs why I asked you to remind your mother. I still have to look after Mrs. Harris at your house. I feel uncomfortable if your mother keeps treating me like that.
âEven without you telling me, I would have done that. Iâm also uncomfortable seeing my mother expecting me to be with a woman like you.â Jeremy raised his eyebrows with a serious expression.
âOkay. Then everything is clear, now. No need to feel so offended.â
Jeremyâs head snapped back. âIâm not offended.â
âYouâre offended. You look at me like a disgusting creature right now. Just look at your furrowed eyebrows. But I donât mind. After what Iâve done for Sophia, I understand that you think Iâm evil.â
Jeremy took a deep breath and looked back at the front. This was the first time he felt tired of dealing with someone.
âCan we continue our journey now?â Ava asked unexpectedly.
Jeremy glanced cynically at her. âYouâre bossy too, apparently.â
âIf you mind, thatâs fine. I can get a taxi.â
Ava blinked firmly. Getting no response from Jeremy, she took off her
seat belt.
âOkay. Thanks for the ride.â
Instead of feeling guilty, Jeremy was stunned. For him, Ava was not only selfish, but also too dramatic.
âJeez. Why would Frank work with a girl like this?â Jeremy grumbled as he leaned his head against his seat. In the rearview mirror, he could see Ava walking away towards the right position to hail a taxi.

At that moment, Jeremy caught a black car parked some distance behind. Seeing the vehicle start to creep towards Ava, a bad feeling haunted him. He remembered that the car never overtook them even
though it seemed in a hurry.
Meanwhile, Ava was busy with her phone, searching for the nearest taxi via the application. In her heart, she grumbled, âHow could he be so fickle? If he minds accompanying me, he shouldnât have to. Why let me stuck in the middle of the road like this?â
After a few steps, someone suddenly jerked Avaâs hand. When she turned around, Jeremyâs serious gaze greeted her.
âGo back to the car. I can take you to the hospital.â
Ava raised her eyebrows. Stepping back, she jerked her hand away, out of Jeremyâs grasp. âNo, thank you. I can do it myself.â
Every word Ava said was clear. However, Jeremy caught her wrist
again, as if her firmness meant nothing.
âOkay, Iâm sorry if I offended you. Now can you get in the car?â Jeremy asked while occasionally glancing behind Avaâs back. The black car had now stopped. The windshield was too dark to see who
was behind it.
Unfortunately, Ava didnât read the warning. She jerked her hand again
and moved backwards.
