“Then this,” Eva handed her another smaller bag. “You didn’t think I forgot your birthday, did you?”

Eva widened her smile then hugged Ava. “Happy birthday, Sister. Sorry I’m a day late.”

Hearing that, Louis’ neck stretched. “It was Ava’s birthday yesterday? Why didn’t she tell us?”

“And why is Uncle Jeremy keeping it a secret too?” Emily frowned.

Guilt suddenly haunted Jeremy. He had missed Ava’s special day and even dragged her to the brink of death.

“Sorry, I don’t know about that either.”

“Ah, Uncle sucks,” Louis grumbled, inviting a small rebuke from Kara.

Jeremy fell silent. Not because he was disturbed by Louis, but by Mrs. Connor. When Ava told her yesterday’s date, why didn’t she say congratulations? Was it because she was in a coma that she forgot her daughter’s birthday?

Meanwhile, Eva had loosened her embrace. “I hope next year you will celebrate your birthday. A party once a year is not too much, Sister. I will definitely come.”

A second later, Eva turned to face Jeremy. She didn’t care if Ava was overwhelmed by the embarrassment.

While Eva gritted her teeth, Ava looked at Jeremy with teary eyes. Her chest was tight, full of warm air. That was the first time someone was willing to stand by her side, saving her from humiliation.

“Ava, didn’t you say you wanted to continue your task?” Jeremy asked in a flat tone, but seemed gentle in Ava’s ears.

The girl blinked. “Yes.”

“Then let’s get out. I also have to take care of my work.”

After returning the shopping bag to Eva, Jeremy left the room. Ava followed two steps behind him with an awkward gesture. The twins secretly giggled seeing that.

“It turns out that Uncle Jeremy isn’t bad. He can also be a hero for Ava,” Louis whispered to Emily.

The little girl nodded. “Yeah. Uncle Jeremy is cool!”

“I think we should head out too. We still have a little work to do before dinner.” Kara tapped the twins on the back three times.

The two toddlers nodded spontaneously. “Yeah. Excuse us, Mrs. Connor.”

They didn’t mention Eva’s name. When they passed in front of her, they all just nodded.

“Now, where did Uncle and Ava go?” Louis jumped in spy mode when he arrived in the living room.

suggested with round eyes. “Mommy, is there still time if we make a birthday cake?”

Kara shook her head. “No.”

“How about we just buy it? That’s much faster,” Emily pointed her finger at the side of her chubby cheek.

Louis welcomed the idea enthusiastically. “Then let’s start decorating the dining room. Or should we prepare the back gazebo? But Mrs. Connor might have trouble getting there.”

“Little Angels,” Kara interrupted gently, “I know you care about But for this problem, can you let Uncle Jeremy take care of it?”

The twins blinked, digesting.

“Is this adult business too?” Emily tilted her head.

Kara nodded. “Right now, Ava is sensitive. So, just let Uncle Jeremy handle her. He understands her much better.”

Instead of frowning, the twins smiled mysteriously.

“That’s a great idea, Mommy.”

“Uncle Jeremy can’t possibly let Ava be sad. He will definitely accompany and comfort her.”

In her room, Ava sat pensively. Her gaze fell on the bags on her lap. She should be angry seeing all that. But strangely, her heartbeat actually felt pleasant.

“Why did he defend me? Is it because we are already friends? Don’t friends usually defend each other?”

Tilting her head, Ava bit her lip. “But, is it okay to let other people

ridicule my sister?”

After a few blinks, Ava shook her head with her eyes closed. “But Eva deserves that. All this time, I’ve always given in to her. She can’t keep putting me down in front of other people. She might take Mom away from me, but not the others.”

Suddenly, someone knocked on the door. Without making a sound, Ava went to check it out.

“Jeremy?” Her eyes widened. Why did he come to her room?

Jeremy blinked lightly. “Can I come in?”

Ava’s eyebrows rose even higher. “You want to come into my room?”

“There’s something I want to ask you. But if you feel uncomfortable, how about we go to my study for a moment?”

Ava’s eyes twitched. Not wanting Jeremy to be offended, she opened the door as wide as possible.

“What do you want to ask?” She shifted to the wall, making way for Jeremy.

The man took two steps before turning to face her.

“Are you….” Jeremy looked down. His voice was a little hesitant. ” Fine?”

Ava’s breath hitched. A strange vibration tickled her heart. “Yeah. What’s up?”

Jeremy nodded stiffly. “That’s good. I thought you would cry after being embarrassed by your sister.”

Ava smiled wryly even though her heart was a little touched. “You would be embarrassed if you were in my position?”
