Chapter 27
Pregnant With Alpha’s Genius Twins
#Chapter 27 â Restless Nights Itâs two oâclock in the morning, and I canât sleep. I sigh and sit up. Iâve tried everything I can think of â
lavender oil, a glass of wine, counting sheep â but I just canât do it. The house is tooâ¦quiet. Not that the boys have made much of a disturbance in their sleep since they were babies, but somehow I just know that theyâre not here. And itâs killing me.
Sighing, I swing my legs out of bed and stand up, peering out the window at the back of my room. I can barely see Victorâs house through the trees. Tonight, though, in the darkness I can clearly see that Victorâs house still has its lights on. What the heck is going on? Itâs two oâclock in the morning, it should be pitch black over there.
I frown. Did Victor ignore me when I told him that the boys have a strict bedtime of 9 pm? 10, at the latest, as a special treat? God, theyâre going to bed dead tomorrow, and we have so much to do.
I storm down the stairs, grabbing a blanket off the couch to wrap around me, and head out the back door. Deep inside, I know that Iâm not really worried about the twins being kept up late. But this doesnât stop me from making my way across my yard, through the trees, and onto Victorâs property.
When I step into Victorâs yard, a figure steps out of the brush to my left. âHalt!â
I jump, suppressing a scream, as I realize that itâs just one of his Betas.
âIâm sorry,â I say, âItâs just me, itâs Evelyn. Iâm just coming to check on my boys.â
The Beta has a quick, muffled conversation with someone through the speaker on his shoulder and then nods to me. âThatâs all right.â He fades back into the darkness.
Shaking my head at this level of security, and how many jump scares theyâve put me through in the past two days, I make my way past the pool and up to the house.
Inside the house is quiet, and Iâm ashamed, a little, at my consideration that Victor may have kept the boys up. Clearly, the house is asleep.
âHey,â says a voice across the kitchen. I turn and notice Beta Edgar sitting at the kitchenâs wide island, a cup of coffee in his hands.
âOh, hi,â I say, awkwardly. âUm, I came becauseâ¦â
He smiles at me warmly. âDo you need a reason?â
I laugh a little and step closer to him, leaning on the far side of the island. âWell, knowing Victor, I probably do.â I lower my voice, imitating him, âWhat are you doing here, Evelyn? Did you make an appointment? Donât know you my schedule is booked solid for the next five weeks?â
Edgar laughs a little and I grimace, âSorry. I shouldnât make fun of your boss,â I say. âThatâs unfair.â
âNo, itâs okay,â Edgar says, âheâs actuallyâ¦a lot easier than some of the other Alphas. Heâs strict, donât get me wrong. But heâs fair, and he treats us like people.â
âGood,â I say softly. I look up the stairs, wondering about my kids. âSo, how did tonight go? Are they okay?â
âTheyâre fine,â Edgar says. âThereâs nothing to worry about. They pigged out, had a lot of laughs, and then Victor put on a movie for them in their room. Asleep by ten.â
âTheir room?â I say, raising my eyebrows.
âYou should see it,â says Edgar, matching my expression. âItâs really something. Theyâre lucky kids.â
I smile, warming to him, and step closer, taking a seat on the stool next to him. âIf everyoneâs asleep, then why is this place lit up like LAX? Why are you up?â
âSomeoneâs always up,â Edgar says, taking a sip of his coffee, âI just drew short straw tonight. And also,â he says, pointing over his shoulder with his thumb towards a wide mahogany door, âthe boss is up.â
âHe is?â I say, looking to the door with surprise. âWhy didnât he go to sleep?â
âWork to do,â Edgar says, admiringly. âHe put off some work so that he could spend the evening with the boys, but he wonât go to sleep until itâs taken care of.â
âWow,â I say, likewise impressed. âDoes he do this a lot?â
âHeâs our Alpha,â Edgar says, shrugging. âHe doesnât go to bed until the job is done. He takes it seriously.â
I nod, staring at the door, thinking about this new aspect of Victorâs personality. He continues to surprise me. I think part of me always thought he was just another rich boy, inheriting power. But more and more Iâm coming to realize that Victor is earning his place as the next top Alpha.
âWhat about you,â Edgar says, interrupting my thoughts. âWhy are you up?â
âOh, you know,â I say, smiling at him and shrugging. âMom stuff. Itâs myâ¦first night away from the boysâ¦â
âIn a long time?â Edgar asks.
âEver.â I say, grimacing. âI guess Iâm not handling it as well as Iâd like.â
âWell, then letâs get you a coffee,â he says, standing up and walking over to the machine. âIf youâre going to be up, may as well be caffeinated.â
âDo you see him?â Ian whispers to Alvin, narrowing his eyes at the man talking to their mother downstairs.
âI thought Beta Edgar was our friend,â Alvin replies. âBut I donât like the way he is talking to our mama.â
The pair spy through the railings of the second floor. They knew the minute their mother came into the house, as they always do â though they hadnât yet told her how well they could sense her. There was so much they could do that mama didnât know about yet.
âShe came to see usâ Ian whispers.
âAnd now he captured her, and wonât let her come see our new room, and our fort.â Both glare at Edgar, jealous.
âPapa wonât like it, Beta Edgar talking to mama.â Alvin murmurs.
âTrying to steal her away,â Ian agrees. They both nod and, as one, slink silently down the stairs towards their fatherâs office. There, they pry open the door on silent hinges and slip inside.
âThatâs amazing,â Edgar says, laughing. âI can see you there, as a teenager, dancing on the Champs-
Elysees for touristsâ pennies.â
Evelyn laughs too, surprised that sheâs opening up so much. âThe pennies didnât buy much,â she says, shrugging, âjust a couple of croissants, but it was an amazing summer. Until my dad came and found me, dragged me home.â
Edgar takes a moment, smiling at Evelyn, before saying, âwell, Iâm sorry you didnât get to stay, but, selfishlyâ¦Iâm glad you came back. Or else I never would have met you.â
Evelyn smiles back. âThank you, Edgar, Iâm glad to have met you too.â
âDo you think,â he says, hesitantly, âThat some night I couldâ¦take you out? To hear more stories about Paris? About your life?â Edgar holds his breath, waiting. Evelynâs mouth drops open in surprise.
Suddenly, they hear someone behind Edgar clear his throat. Both turn at once to see Victor standing there, his arms crossed, glaring at them. Edgar leaps to his feet, saluting. âSir!,â he says, turning red.
âBeta,â Victor says, and Edgar snaps his arms to his side. âDonât you have duties to which you should attend?â
âSir,â says Edgar, turning on his heel and heading out the back door to patrol.
Victor turns his gaze to Evelyn, who still sits at his counter, grasping her cup of coffee.
âWhat are you doing here, Evelyn?â
She shrugs. âI saw the lights on. I came to make sure the boys were in bed, that you werenât keeping them up all night.â
âWell as you can see,â Victor says, spreading his hands to indicate the empty kitchen. âTheyâre asleep.
Itâs just me up, finishing up some work.â
Evelyn holds his gaze for a moment, and then pointedly shifts her own to look directly at the two pairs of shining eyes peeking from between the railing at the top of the stairs. There is a small shriek â like a mouse â and then the sound of scurrying feet.
âAsleep my ass,â Evelyn says softly, smirking at her victory.
âWell, they were asleep, until you came over.â
âNo worries,â Evelyn says, standing up and wrapping her blanket around herself, preparing for the walk home. âYouâre right, Victor. Youâre doing a great job, really. Iâm sorry to have interrupted.â She gives him a smile and yawns, heading for the back door, grateful to know that the boys were safeâ¦if not quite asleep.
âEvelyn,â Victor calls after her, how brows low over his eyes. âDid that Betaâ¦did heâ¦â
She raises her eyebrows at him, daring him to ask.
âDid he ask you out?â
Evelyn shrugs. âYeah, he did. So?â
Victor scoffs, disgust in his throat. âHow dare he ââ
âVictor,â Evelyn says, shaking her head and rolling her eyes. âDonât make such a big deal out of this, and donât you dare fire him. He works for you, not for me. He didnât do anything wrong.â
Victor crosses his arms and looks her up and down, sneering. âEvelyn, you arenât consideringâ¦â
âSo what if I am?â Evelyn says, shaking her hair back and meeting him eye for eye. Honestly, she hadnât really thought about it enough to make a decision yet, but now that Victor was acting like such a jerk about itâ¦
âEvelyn,â Victor growls, quickly closing the space between them. âYou canât date a Beta, heâs far below you in station -â
âIâm a Rogue, Victor,â she returns, matching his contempt. âEdgar is several stations above me.â
Victor pauses, seeing her point, but then continues. âYou are the mother of my children, Evelyn. With that comes certain responsibilities ââ
Evelyn laughs in his face, heading out the door. âDonât try to pin me down, Victor,â she calls over her shoulder. âIâm not your Luna, you have no say in what I do, or who I see.â
Victor watches her go, anger pulsing through his veins, but he knows, ultimately, that sheâs right. Even when he acknowledges Evelynâs sons as his own, he will have no control over Evelyn, a Rogue wolf.
Well, he thinks, watching her slips beyond the tree line. Weâll just have to do something about that.
