Chapter 34
Pregnant With Alpha’s Genius Twins
#Chapter 34 â The Date âVictor!â I call, following my boys as they dash into his house.
âPapa!â
âDaddy, weâre here!â I raise my eyebrows, laughing. Perhaps we didnât need to all shout at once.
Victor comes from around the corner, smiling. âHey, boys!â He says, dropping to one knee so that he can wrap them both up in a hug together.
I smile at the three of them, tucking a strand of newly-shiny hair behind my ear. I worked for a whole hour, putting together my look tonight. Approximately 55 minutes longer than I usually spend, but the result, I think, has paid off.
Victor looks up at me, and I get confirmation of this via the surprise on his face. âWow, Evie,â he says.
âYou lookâ¦â he clears his throat and looks away from me for a moment, standing up. âYou look dressed up.â
âI am.â I say, dipping a tiny curtsy as a joke.
âShe looks amaaaazingâ Alvin says, with stars in his eyes.
âShe looks like a princess!â Ian confirms, clinging to Victorâs leg and smiling at me. So nice, I think, to have my own little fan section to cheer me on. Victor laughs, probably glad for the distraction.
âWhatâs the occasion?â He asks.
âJust out for the night,â I say. âThank you for agreeing to take the boys on short notice.â
âNo problem,â Victor says. âI had no plans. And weâre going to learn to play football!â he cheers.
Ian makes a face. âMommy says football is a game for people with no imagination.â
Victor narrows his eyes at Ian in mock fury. âThat means mommy has no imagination.â Ian laughs.
âMommy is lying to you, daddy,â Alvin says quietly, his own face very serious.
Victor looks between us, seeking the joke, but there is none. Alvin is dead serious. âShe is?â Victor asks. âAbout what?â
âShe is not going out for the night. She is going on a date.â
âOne goes out for the night during a date,â I say, making a face at my little betrayer. âIt wasnât a lie.â
âYou withheld the truth,â Alvin says, pointing at me accusingly as he steps closer to his father, clearly showing where his loyalties lie. âThat is lying.â
I shake my head and laugh. âOne need not divulge all details of their business,â I say to him. âItâs called discretion.â
âHeâs six years old,â Victor says, a little awe in his voice. âHow can he possibly be learning the concept of discretion.â
âWeâre very clever, dad.â Ian says seriously. âDonât underestimate us.â
âI would never,â Victor says, laughing. âGo ahead in the living room,â he says to the boys, âAmelia put out some snacks. Iâll meet you there in a minute.â
âGive me a kiss first,â I say, holding my boys close and giving each a peck as they pass me on their way to the living room and Victorâs big screen TV. I smile after them, watching them go.
âSo, a date?â Victor says, and I realize that heâs standing next to me.
âYup!â I say, cheerful. âIâm really excited.â
âAnd who,â he says, continuing his interrogation, âis this date with?â
âIs it any of your business?â
âEvelyn,â he says, sighing, condescending, âyour my sonsâ mother, everything you do is my business.â
âOh, really?â I say, leaning back and looking at him incredulously. âDoes that mean that everything you do, as my sonsâ father, is my business?â
âYouâre being deliberately difficult, Evelyn ââ
âOh please, Victor, youâre being old-fashioned and selfish. I can date whoever I want!â
âLook, will you please just tell me who youâre going out with? It would be different, obviously, if I wasnât who I am. But as a major political figure, I have enemies, and there could be a subset of the popula-â
âOh my god, Victor, fine,â I say, rolling my eyes and giving in just to shut him up. âIâm going out with Edgar, that Beta you set to patrol outside my house. Considering that youâve already given him a background check, and trained him yourself on safety protocol, I think that Iâm going to be safe from political espionage.â
âWhat?â Victor is incredulous.
âWhat, did you not background check him? Thatâs your bad.â
âNo, Evelyn,â he sputters, âyou canât go out with a Beta, and you especially canât go out with my Beta.â
âWhy the hell not?!â
âWell, putting aside the argument that heâs far beneath you in classâ
âAbove me,â I remind him, pointing to myself. âIâm a Rogue, weâve talked about this.â
Victor rolls his eyes. âPutting aside the fact that youâre Alpha born and the mother of Alpha boys, and thus have a responsibility to date within your class, Edgar is a member of my staff.â
âVictor,â I say, sighing, exhausted by all of this. âCan you please just back off? Itâs a date. Itâs one date,â
âOne date that could turn into ten, which could turn into an engagement, a marriage â itâs not appropriate!â
âBack off, Victor,â I say, suddenly losing my temper. âI can date who I want, and quite frankly, it doesnât matter if this relationship lasts one night or the rest of my life â thatâs my choice to make.â
âOne night?!â Victor hisses, grabbing my arm. âYou would seriously consider ââ
I work to pull my arm away, but he holds tight. âVictor, let go of me ââ
âIf my staff got wind of the fact that youâre f*****g one of them â that youâre available ââ
âAre you serious, Victor!?â I yell, getting up in his face. âSo itâs fine for you to f**k me and never talk to me again, but if I deign to f**k someone youâve hired ââ
Victor growls at me, and I can see the rage in his eyes. Iâve tipped him over the edge. âI will not have my sonâs mother acting like a slut ââ
This knocks the wind out of me. I step back, shaking my head, marveling at this man. Victor steps back too, his eyes wide, realizing that heâs crossed a line.
âWhat is with this family,â I whisper. âThe two of you throw around that word very easily. Like itâs a bad thing to be a woman who has s*x, who is in control of her body.â I scoff and head towards the door.
âThe two of us?â Victor calls after me, confused. Then, I see the realization dawn on his face.
âYeah, your girlfriend doesnât shy away from s****l slurs either. What a gem.â I pull the door open and take a deep breath of cool air, eager to get out. âIâll be home late, but Iâd appreciate it if you could keep the boys overnight.â
âOf course,â I hear him murmur, turning to see shame on his face. Good.
âThank you,â I say, and then make my way back to my house, where I see Edgarâs car turn into my drive.
After Evelyn has gone, Victor opens a beer and drinks it quietly in the kitchen, thinking.
âPapa?â Alvin asks, peeking around the corner. âAre you coming? We want to learn to watch the foot ball,â he says, stumbling over the word and pronouncing it as two separate terms.
Victor laughs lightly. âSure, buddy. Just give me a minute, Iâll be right in.â Alvin smiles and disappears back into the living room.
Victor turns the beer bottle over in his hands, the condensation collecting on his fingers. He feels deeply ashamed of himself for how he just treated Evelyn, for losing his temper, for calling herâ¦that.
In truth, he didnât mean it â not a word of it. Well, he didnât think she should be seeing Edgar â it would make it complicated for Edgar to be crossing lines between Victorâs personal and professional life. But Victor knew that he was crossing his own line with Evelyn. She should be able to see whoever she wanted and Edgar is a good guy.
So what was his problem?
Victor shakes his head and finishes the beer, going to the fridge for another before heading in to watch sports with his boys. Iâve got to be better than this, he thinks, settling down on the couch. I am better than this. Evelyn and I are co-parents, we have to be on each otherâsâ team.
Nodding, his decision made, Victor grabs the remote and changes the channel to the game. âOkay, boys. The first thing you have to learn is the term quarterback.â
