Chapter 401
The Alpha: Claiming His Enemy's Daughter
Chapter 401: I WANT YOU TO STAY Iris was surprised by his gesture, but she didnât deny how happy she was to be this close to him. She could smell his scent, as if it engulfed her senses and stared at his side profile, while he continued reading seriously. The scar on his face didnât look as scary as the first time she saw him.
Probably, the scar on his face and also how cold and collected he was had a major say in making people think twice before they tried to approach him. But in reality, it worked to Caneâs benefit as well, as he didnât want anyone to approach him recklessly.
In the end, drunk by the sight of her mate, Iris fell asleep and Cane could tell the moment she slipped deeper into her slumber as her breathing became even. He then used his right hand to hold her head in place, so she wouldnât fall when the carriage shook because of the rough road.
Once they arrived at the pack house, he picked her up gently and carried her toward their bedroom right in front of everyoneâs eyes.
The sight of it made Jaceâs jaw hit the floor.
"Whatâs with that expression?" Ethan frowned to see Jace gobsmacked. He and some other warriors didnât find the sight surprising whatsoever, as they had long gotten used to it.
"He carried her."
"She is sleeping, right?"
"He can wake her up."
Ethan stared at Caneâs retreating back, as Irisâ auburn hair spread on his shoulder. "Nah, I donât think he can wake her up. She is a heavy sleeper."
Because Ethan would always be there whenever they went on a long journey, he knew Iris would often fall asleep, even when she was on horseback, as if she could sleep anywhere she wanted.
"I have told you everything, why are you still surprised?" Ethan patted his shoulder and then left to take care of something, leaving Jace still reeling at the sight.
Not long after, a warrior approached him and told him there was a letter for their alpha from the Celestial Moon pack, precisely Alpha Derick.
freewÑbnoνel.com "How do you know this is from Alpha Derick?" Jace frowned at the additional information.
"Itâs written on the envelope," the warrior replied innocently.
"You can read?" Ethan had told him about it, but it was easy to brush it off when it was the Gamma who told him the story, since he knew how he usually was.
"I can." The warrior looked so proud of himself when he admitted that. He lifted his chin with his eyes lit up.
Jace raised the envelope to his face and told him to read it and he did. After that, he found another report for him to read, which he did, though some words were difficult for him, he could still understand the gist of it.
"Luna Iris taught me and a few warriors who went with her to the capital city how to," he said. His name was Eron and he was definitely one of the warriors who had stayed in the orphanage and been taught by Iris herself before she went to the Riverside pack.
Jace waved his hand. "You can leave... leave..." he said in a tired tone, while Eron frowned, wondering what he did wrong.
=============================
The next few days went uneventfully, as Cane spent his time with Alpha Dristan and Koda inspecting the tunnel, while Iris and Hanna spent their time either inside the pack house or outside, interacting with the members of the Riverside pack.
They looked a little bit wary with Irisâ presence at first, but then when they saw how the children could approach her easily, they started to warm up to her as well.
Most of the time, Iris and Hanna would play with the children or have small talk with the people. Iris taught the woman how to make trinkets, something that she learned when she was in the orphanage in the capital city. The older girls would make trinkets to sell in the market, though the money they got through it was not much, it was more than enough for them to buy small things they wanted.
She was free to go out of the pack house as long as Redmond and at least two other warriors accompanied her. Usually, it would be Eron and Dyne.
Both of them had known Iris since they went to the capital city, thus Cane assigned them for her, since she looked more comfortable with the people she knew.
On the other day, Cane took Iris to the Crystal Moon pack and met with the people there. They stayed for two days before returning to the Riverside pack again.
But today, Cane said something that made her frown.
"You canât go out today, stay inside." That was the first thing Cane said when Iris greeted him with a âgood morningâ.

"Pardon?" She blinked her eyes to look at him more clearly, but Cane simply repeated the same thing. "But, why?"
Both of them were still in bed and it was still early in the morning, where the sun peeked over the horizon, brightening up the gloomy sky.
"Lou will be here," Cane replied.
Iris needed a few more minutes before she discerned what he meant by that. "I will avoid him."
But, Cane shook his head. "No. It will be better if you stay inside. We will return to the Howling Wolf pack tomorrow."
As soon as he heard Lou had arrived at the Howling Wolf pack, he sent Jace to fetch him to the Riverside pack. The poor merchant didnât even get a break whatsoever as he would arrive this morning.
Of course, Lou followed the Beta without so much as a verbal protest when he learned Iris was also in the Riverside pack.
"But..."
"No âbutâs, stay, Iris. I want you to stay behind for today."
"Okay..." Iris relented to see how serious Cane was.
