Alpha’s Thrice Rejected Mate
Chapter 157

Pay you? Threaten you? What did they promise you that made you betray us?!â Jamieâs voice filtered through the fog that clouded my mind.
I moaned and struggled to get up. âJamieâ¦?â
âI didnât- Freya insisted.
âShut up. Just shut the F*CK up. Go stand over there, I need to tend to my mate,â Jamie said.
Jamieâs smell surrounded me even before his arms did. I could also smell the sharp, coppery tang of his blood. âJamie? Are you alright?â
âIâm fine, love. Donât worry about me,â Jamie replied kindly, hugging me to him. I pushed on his chest so I could look up at him. âMargot?â
Jamieâs face fell. âSheâs gone. They took her. I tried my best to stop them.â My stomach clenched. I didnât know if it was from anger, desperation, or the knowledge I was about to be sick. Or all three. âHelp me up. Hurry!â Jamie carefully stood with his arm around me. âIsla, donât push yourself-â âDonât push myself?! Our daughterâs been kidnapped! I could crawl across hot coals at this point!â I yelled.
âIsla, I think Freya had something to do with this. We need to question her,â Jamie replied.
wouldnât hear it. âFreya is my friend. And we have bigger problems now than questioning her. We need her help. We need to go find Margot.â
âI think Freya is working for the council, Isla. I think they took Margot. So Iâm not running off anywhere until I get my answers,â Jamie said. âWe need to think about this. We need to be smart. There will likely be superior forces-

âWeâre going to find her NOW! Right now!â I shouted, my hands balling into fists. âFor Goddessâs sake, Isla, listen to yourself! Just listen! Listen to ME. We canât go off halfâcocked-âJamie argued.

think youâre doing with Freya right now? How does your shouting at her get my baby back?!â I shoved Jamie away, grabbing the shellâshocked Freyaâs wrists. âYou didnât have anything to do with this, did you?â
âNâNo! Of course not!â Freya responded.
I searched her eyes, then nodded. âThen help me get my daughter. Jamieâ¦â
âThatâs not any kind of questioning,â Jamie said.
âItâs the best we can do for now. Freyaâs going to help us get Margot back. Thatâs all I need to know right now,â I replied.

âWe should go now,â Freya urged. âBefore they get too far.â
I nodded. âYes. Letâs go.â
Jamie stood right up next to us, looming over us. âIâm not letting you go anywhere with that traitor. I donât think this is the first time she betrayed us. The accident-
âSheâs not a traitor. I looked into her eyes. She would never hurt me that way,â I said. âWeâre going to find our daughter now, and thatâs final.â
âIsla, I swear, itâs almost like you were in on it yourself! How can you be so sure about this, about her?!â Jamie demanded.
It was like heâd stabbed me in the heart. âWhat did you just say to me?â
I thought heâd realize his mistake and apologize. Instead, for some reason, my husband doubled down.
âIt seems like youâre willing to put aside an awful lot, and the only reason I can think of is that you know our daughterâs alright and were in on the whole thing,â Jamie seethed.
I slapped him across the face. âHow dare you! How DARE you say something like that to me!â
Jamie touched his cheek, reeling back and blinking. âIsla, Iâ¦â
âDonât speak to me. Freya, do you know which way they went?â I asked, turning my back on Jamie.
âYes. I saw them just as I was leaving the temple.â Freya pointed at the tree line. âThey went that way.â
âAlright.â I lifted my skirts and began marching in that direction.
Jamie caught my wrist. âIsla, Iâm sorry, I-â
I shook him off. âI donât want to talk about it. Itâs not important right now. You, me, us, WEâRE not important right now. Come with us or donât. I donât care. anymore. I have to find my daughter.â
Freya pushed past Jamie and took my hand. âWeâll find her, Isla. Donât worry.â Determinedly not looking back at Jamie, I ran for the trees with Freya.
Never in my whole life, or what I remembered of it, could I remember wishing so hard that I could shift. I mentally cursed my family for poisoning me to the point. of weakness that I couldnât call my wolf.
âYou should go ahead,â I said to Freya. âYou can still shift.â
Freya shook her head vehemently. âNo. You need to come with me.â
I sighed. âWhat is it with you and Jamie? Stop worrying about me. Start worrying about Margot!â
âI am worrying about Margot. Whatâs she going to think if I show up without her

mother?â Freya pointed out.
âSheâll probably wonder about her father as well,â I mumbled, worry washing over me. Perhaps I should have taken the extra time to resolve things with Jamie. âHeâll be along. Iâm sure. Probably with the strength of the pack behind him,â Freya assured me. She patted my arm. âHeâll be able to follow your scent. Youâre his mate. Weâre doing the right thing by scouting on ahead.â
I nodded. âYes, youâre right. Weâll be able to lead the pack straight to her. Then Jamie can rip through them and get our daughter back.â
Freya smiled. âExactly.â
âStill,â I said. âI think we should pick up the pace.â
âOf course.â But Freya didnât go any faster.
âFreya, I said we need to pick up the pace,â I repeated, exasperated.
âI donât want you to trip and fall.â Freya stopped altogether, turned, and took my hand again. âYou might have a head injury.â
âWh
are you doing?â I asked. âWe need-
Freya drew her fingers in a symbol on the back of my hand.
I suddenly felt very woozy. âFreya?â
âDonât worry, Isla. Everything is going to be okay,â Freya said.
There was a blinding flash of light, and Jamie was on the ground. I was wedged between the seats, trying to reach Margot. Her little head was bleeding.
The pain told me I had some wounds of my own, but nothing compared to the stark, gripping terror of seeing Margot bleeding from her head.
âGet her,â a voice said. âGet her; leave the babe and the king.
Someone reached through the open front door of the car and grabbed the back of my shirt, hauling me away from my daughter.
âNo!â I shrieked. âNo! Margot, sheâs hurt!â
The masked person whoâd grabbed me slapped me across the face. âDid you could escape me forever?â
Oh, Goddess. My fiance, Jasper Talton.
you think
âSlap her around later; we need to get out of here,â another voice I recognized said.
I turned my head. This one was not wearing a mask. âHera?â
Jasper removed his mask and looked at Hera. âI still donât know why weâre bothering.â He leaned over and k*ssed my sister passionately. âWeâre so good together.â
Hera pushed him away. âLater. We need to leave before he wakes up. I donât know

how long heâll be out. The witch didnât say.â
Jasper made a face but hauled me over his shoulder.
I kicked and clawed at his skin.
Jasper giunted. âA little help here?â
A cool hand touched the back of my n*eck.
âDonât worry, Isla. Everything is going to be okayâ¦â
Then the world went black.
