Chapter 158
Alpha’s Thrice Rejected Mate
Chapter 158
**Isla
I was still walking when the memory faded, following Freya through the woods. I stopped in my tracks, looking around us. âThis isnât the way they went.â
Freya looked back at me, surprised. âOh, youâre awaâerâtalking.â
My eyes narrowed on her. âWhat did you do to me?â
âNothing!â Freya waved her hands. âYou were just really quiet for a while, thatâs all!â
âI donât believe you. This is nowhere near where they took Margot, is it?â I accused her. âOh Goddess, Jamie was right all along!â
âNo! I mean⦠no, just⦠give me⦠I need⦠we need,â Freya began..
âI donât care what you need! Give me my daughter!â I shouted.
Freya grabbed me roughly by the arm. âIâm working on that! We just need to do something else first.â
âSomething else are you out of your mind?!â I struggled, but Freya was stronger than she looked.
She dragged me back towards a mound of rocks.
âWhere are you taking me?!â I demanded.
âYouâre too upset. Youâre just going to interfere,â Freya said.
âInterfere? You bet Iâm going to interfere!â I told her. I managed to twist away and started running. âJamie!â I called, hoping heâd followed us. âJamie!â
A white light blinded me, and I was knocked to the ground.
Dizzy, I was barely aware of Freya picking me up and carrying me back to the rocks. âWe have to find a witch to undo the curse on your memories,â she muttered.
A hole appeared in the rocks, and Freya shoved me in.
âNo!â I called weakly, reaching out. âNo, Freya⦠donât!â
âIâm sorry,â Freya said. She raised her hand, and the rocks began closing up in front of me.
âNo!â I struggled to my knees, but then there was only darkness.
âIâll be back,â Freya promised, her voice muffled by the rock. âJust sit tight.â
I shrieked and began shoving at the rocks, but they wouldnât budge.
âPlease donât hurt yourself,â Freya said. âIâll be back. Soon, I hope.â âFreya!â I yelled. âFreya, you let me out! LET ME OUT!â
But Freya was gone. I could sense it.

I was a fool. A fool who was now alone, without help. I shoved at the rocks some more, hitting them and pressing against them with my shoulder with all my strength, but not so much as a pebble moved.
Finally, I sat back and pulled my knees to my chest.
âOh. Jamieâ¦â I whispered. âIâm so sorry.â
With nothing else to do, I decided to try jogging my memory myself. I wanted to knit together some of the pieces and perhaps learn more about the accident I kept having flashes of. And Freya.
I began where my cohesive memories left off, closing my eyes and concentrating.
âDid it hurt?â Jamie asked, drawing a handkerchief between my legs to catch the small trickle of blood there.
After our first desperate coupling right on the kitchen counter, Jamie had lifted me easily in his arms and carried me to the ratty old mattress in the corner of the dilapidated cabin.
He now lay next to me, caring for me as no one ever had.
Tears rose to my eyes at his tenderness, and I stroked his cheek. âYouâre my mate, I said softly. âIt felt⦠right.â
âBut I hurt you.â Jamie showed me the handkerchief. âI made you bleed.â
I lowered his hand so I could give him a k*ss. âIt didnât hurt as much as it felt good,â I admitted. âIâm just a little sore. Thatâs all.â
Jamie k*ssed me again, softly at first, then his k*ss turned hungry.
âMpf, no,â Jamie said, pulling back. âNo, itâs too soon. I shouldnât haveâ¦â
âItâs okay.â I wrapped my arms around him. âI want to. I want to do it again.â Jamie groaned and pressed his forehead to mine. âIâm not going to have the strength to say ânoâ twice. Are you sure, Isla?â
I spread my legs wide and k*ssed him again. âMake love to me, Jamie.â
âDid you tear this on purpose?â I giggled, looking at the crisp, white shirt Jamie. had brought me. I was fairly certain it hadnât even been worn once.
âWould I do that as an excuse to see you?â Jamie asked innocently.
Thanks to Jamieâs recommendation, I was now a seamstress in the castle. It came with a bed, three meals a day, and a small income, so I was happy. I was even happier I got to see Jamie.
Iâd thought Iâd see him every few days. He was a prince, after all. He must have duties.

But Jamie somehow managed to make time for me every day.
âYou even ripped it right along the seams,â I said, âso I donât even have to work all that hard to sew it up.â
âI didnât want to ruin a perfectly good shirtâ¦â Jamie replied. But the heat in his eyes said his visit had absolutely nothing to do with the shirt.
I snorted. âYou just want me to have extra time to do⦠other things.â
âWhy, Isla, thatâs a terrible accusation! Iâll have to have you punished,â Jamie grinned.
âHave me punished. Right. Youâre going to do all the punishing yourself.â I primly. began pinning the shoulder of the shirt back together. âWell, youâre just going to have to wait. SOMEONE gave me more work to do.â
Jamie whipped the shirt right out of my hands.
âHey!â I protested.
âSex now. Shirt later,â Jamie growled, trailing his hand up my side.
It burned where he touched me, all the way through my dress. âWhat are you, a cave wolf?â
âYes. Jamie want Isla. Right now.â He lifted me up on a counter, right on top of a dress Iâd been ironing.
âJamie!â I shrieked. âThe dress!â
âIâll buy a new one. Iâll buy a hundred. Just please⦠please let me?â He gave me the sweetest, saddest puppyâdog eyes.
I sighed and started undoing the top of my dress. âI swear if you werenât so adorableâ¦â
âScore!â Jamie pulled me to him and k*ssed me thoroughly.
In the end, he did have to buy a new dress.
The grounds were covered in fall leaves that crunched wetly under our feet as Jamie, and I walked handâinâhand under the trees.
âIsla,â Jamie said after a while.
âHmm?â I asked, trying not to sound trepidatious. He was using his âIâmâgoingâtoâaskâyouâsomethingâuncomfortableâ tone.
âWhy wonât you tell me about your family? I donât even know your real last name,â Jamie went on in a rush.
I stiffened, and Jamie must have noticed because he brought my hand to his l*ps.
âHey, no matter who they are or what theyâve done to you, I still want to know. Iâm your mate,â Jamie said softly.
âIâ¦â I tried to think of another excuse to put him off. âTheyâre⦠I⦠How do you

know Lightfoot isnât my real last name?â
Jamie gave me side eyes. âReally? Weâre going in that direction? Youâre going to try to deflect, then lie to me again?â
âI donât want to lie to you,â I replied, hurt. And guilty.
âIâm not making you,â Jamie said. âJust tell me the truth. Just once. Then we never have to talk about it again.â
âIâ¦â I tugged the edge of my dress, distressed by his request. âJamie, I donât want them to hurt you.â
âHow could they hurt me?â Jamie responded. âIâm the Lycan Prince. My fatherâs the Lycan King. What exactly do you think they could do?â
I shivered. âYou donât know them. You donât know the kinds of things theyâre capable of.â
Jamie tucked me under his arm, perhaps thinking I was cold. The air was crisp, but that wasnât why I was shivering. âI know they hurt you. And I know youâre scared of them, even though youâre under my protection.â
âIsnât that enough?â I said desperately. âI mean, what more do you need to know?â âIâm not asking Isla Lightfoot to marry me,â Jamie replied, giving me a stern look. âI want to know your real name.â
Marry him? âBut⦠if you marry me⦠theyâll find out. And theyâll know where I
Suddenly, I couldnât breathe. I took in great gulps of air, but I still couldnât.
breathe.
âHey, hey,â Jamie said, pulling me into his arms and hugging me, gently rubbing my back. âIâm sorry. Iâm sorry. I wonât ask again.â
âLiar,â I wheezed.
Jamie chuckled nervously. âOkay, you got me. But I wonât ask again today, okay?â I nodded, my breathing evening out slowly. âOkay.â
