Chapter 36
Alpha’s Thrice Rejected Mate
Chapter 36
Kate was, indeed, belied by the wrists to the headboard of an old wrought iron bed frame. The frame was completely bent out of shape by now from her struggles and possibly from age. I decided Iâd need to drop some more money at the front desk to cover the damage when I saw the deep ruts scraped into the floor.
âKate,â I growled, coming over to her side of the bed.
Her eyes widened and she stopped struggling. âA-Alpha.â
âI seem to remember you being stationed in Jessup Town.â I went on, leaning over the bed so I could scowl down at her properly.
Kate gulped. âItâs nice to see you, too, Alpha. Iâd love to explain why Iâm here, but Iâm a little tied up at the moment. Could you-could you maybe help with that?â I easily snapped each belt in half. âI know why youâre here.â
âShawnâs been captured,â Kate babbled, as though I hadnât spoken. She sat up and rubbed her wrists. âKora and I were going after him. Oh, then Jim at the front desk told us about how Koraâs dad was under a spell and was being controlled by a witch-â
âDeborah Shadowmoon,â I provided.
âRight, right,â Kate said. âSo we were going to go in and get them, but then as I thought about it, I realized we just couldnât do it by ourselves, so I told Kora we should go back and talk to youâ¦â She peered around me. âUm⦠I donât suppose you brought reinforcements?â
âWeâre at war with Shadowmoon right now. I couldnât bring reinforcements,â I sighed.
âOh.â Kate squinched her eyes shut. âOh, we are so f*cked. Or, at least Kora is. I would have gone after her, Alpha, I swearâ¦â
I patted her knee. âI know. Youâre a true and loyal friend. If not a very obedient soldier.â
âI wish Iâd come to my senses in Jessup Town,â Kate replied miserably. âMaybe I could have stopped her from coming here in the first place. We could have gone home and talked to the commander and maybe gotten a small spearhead team-
âItâs all hands on deck, Iâm afraid,â I said. âYouâve only got me.â
Kate dropped her head into her hands. âNo offense, Alpha, but thatâs not exactly comforting.â
I had to agree with her. âIâm going after her regardless. I would order you home, but I doubt youâd follow that order.â
âNo, Alpha, I would. t,â kate mumbled.
âI thought not. As you said, itâs too late to catch her now, so we need to come up with a plan.â I sank down onto the lumpy mattress next to her. âWeâll need to do some reconnaissance, get the lay of the land. I wish we knew someone whoâd been in that territory who could give us a little guidance.â
âMaybe Jim, the innkeeper?â Kate suggested.
I wondered how much that would cost, and if he would even involve himself for any amount. âJim seems to keep himself well out of things, but it canât hurt to try, I suppose.â
There was a knock on the door, then Jim stuck his head in. âSomeone to see you.â
Oh, thank the Goddess. Kora had come to her senses. âExcuse me, Kate. I need to put the fear of the Goddess into my mate-â
The door opened further, and Shawn, n*ked as the day is long, stood in the doorway. He was filthy, with leaves and sticks in his hair.
I froze. âShawn?â
âOh. Hi. Alpha.â Shawn said, his eyes widening.
âIâll just leave you all to it.â Jim bobbed his head and disappeared again.
âWerenât you expecting me?â I asked.
Shawn shook his head. âThe old man just said my âpartyâ was here.â
âHe took one look at you and decided you needed to see us? Thatâs a wily old man, Jim.â I said, unable to stop a chuckle.
âI think heâs psychic,â Shawn agreed.
âHeâs certainly knowledgeable. He knows Koraâs dad and likes him. He told us to go home last night,â Kate said.
Shawn sat down on the mattress, getting it d*rty. It looked like Iâd be replacing that, too. âI wish you had. Lyle is a complete psychopath.â He looked at me and then bowed his head. âAlpha⦠everyone is dead. Everyone.â
âI heard. Iâm sorry,â I replied.
âSo⦠Iâm going to go out on a limb and say Koraâs gone to find me?â Shawn said, picking some flakes of dirt from the mattress and tossing them on the floor.
âYouâd be right.â I looked Shawn up and down. âYou look like hell.â
âI feel like hell,â Shawn replied.
âThey have a shower here?â I asked Kate.
âCommunal, I think. Down the hall,â Kate said.
1 nodded. âShaw.., you go shower. Then weâll talk about whether or not youâre going back in
Shawn shuddered, but then tensed his jaw. âOf course, Iâm going back in. Koraâs about to be captured.â
âNo doubt.â My stomach turned at the idea. âBut after what youâve been through and what youâve seen, I know it would be asking a lot for you to come with us.â âIâm the only one who knows the way,â Shawn said softly.
âYou could draw us a map-â I began.
âIâm going!â Shawn shouted, his whole b*dy vibrating with tension.
I reached out and gently squeezed his shoulder. âAlright, fine. Youâre going.â
Shawn got to his feet. âThat way to the shower?â he asked, pointing to the right. âYeah.â Kate confirmed.
Shawn stalked out of the room.
âHeâs going to be royally f*cked up in the head after this,â Kate murmured.
âHeâs already royally f*cked up in the head,â I said, recognizing the signs. Iâd seen others come back from the last war when my father had been killed. No one would describe the scene to me, even to this day.
âAnd weâre taking him?â Kate asked, uncertain.
I shrugged. âYou really think Iâll have any more luck keeping him here than you?â âNo.â Kate conceded.
We sat in companionable silence until Shawn returned with a towel wrapped around his waist. âHe wants Kora,â he said without preamble.
âI know,â I responded.
âHeâs also got a war going with us. So I expect itâs just us here,â Shawn sighed.
âYouâd be right.â I looked into his eyes, searching for signs of weakness. âYouâre sure youâre up to this?â
Shawn nodded. âIâd walk through fire for Kora, you know that.â
âSheâs still MY mate,â I reminded him.
Shawn chuckled. âThe only reason she ever asked me to mate her was so she could stick around and find out more information about her fatherâs betrayal. Alpha, sheâs loved you since we were all kids. I couldnât even compete, and I wouldnât want to. Weâre just friends.â
That made me feel a bit better. âAlright, then. Letâs get ourselves dressed-â]
looked pointedly at Shawn. â-and get moving.
âI need to relay some information to you first. I assume Beta Eddie is in charge back at the castle?â Shawn asked.
âYes,â I said. âHe is.â
âLyle sometimes bragged about his battle plans, and the guards he stuck on me never kept their mouths shut about what was going on with the Shadowmoon Pack. So⦠I think we need to get a message to Beta Eddieâ¦â Shawn rubbed the back of his n*eck. âNot that I know what the h*ll theyâre going to be able to do against magic.â
I frowned. âI saw Jim has a phone. Iâll call Eddie. But I think itâs best you tell me your information, and quickly.â
Shawn began speaking then, outlining all the plans he knew.
By the time he was finished, my stomach was in knots.
âF**k,â I breathed.
