Chapter 44
Alpha’s Thrice Rejected Mate
Chapter 44
âWell, well, well, I have to say, this is unexpected,â Deborah, Luna Regent of the Shadowmoon Pack, and witch said, looking down at me from her throne.
âWhat can I say? I missed your hospitality,â I replied. This time, I hadnât bothered to steal anyoneâs clothes. I hadnât bothered sneaking in at all. Iâd stood at the edge of Caldwell and almost begged them to capture me.
Lyle was over to one side, bandaged and glaring murderously at me.
I gave him a wink.
âDonât think I will allow you to challenge my son a second time,â Deborah warned me. âHeâs proven⦠most disappointing in that department.â
âSons are like that. Ask my mother,â I said. âShe wanted to get my mate killed on a spearhead team.â
Deborahâs trill of laughter filled the throne room. âAs though Kora would have been in any danger. Then she gave me a hard look. âI am wondering, young man, the real reason you are here.â
âItâs quite simple, really. Iâm here to trade myself for Oswald Monroe.â I rocked back on my heels for a moment, letting that sink in.
âAnd why, when I have you well within my clutches already, would I release Oswald?â Deborah asked, though there was a glint of interest in her eyes.
âIâm told for a witch to own your spirit, you have to give it willingly,â I said. âOr did I hear that wrong?â
The old witch was nearly salivating. âYou would be willing to trade your will for Oswaldâs freedom?â
âI mean, there would be other conditions, of course, but Iâm just here to see if youâre interested,â I responded.
Deborah leaned back on her throne, tapping her l*p with one long, manicured fingernail. âIt would be QUITE a coup. Iâm sure one of the conditions is that I will not be getting control of the Fullbright Pack.â
âYouâd be correct,â I said.
âAnd that Iâm to let Kora, Shawn, and Oswald go,â Deborah mused.
âYouâre on a roll,â I replied.
âHmm. Delicious.â Deborah smiled at me, a truly evil smile, âWe have an agreement. The next full moon is tonight, as it happens, and I will be able to break his bonds and spin yours the same evening.â
âSounds fun,â I said with a tight smile of my own.
âIn the meantime, allow my guards to show you to your room,â Deborah purred. âCanât have you getting cold feet, now can we?â
âWouldnât dream of it.â I turned to go with the guards.
Deborahâs laughter followed behind me. I didnât take that as a good sign.
We walked across the castle courtyard to an outbuilding that reeked of blood and death. âUp you go,â one of the guards said, suspending me from the ceiling by a chain and silver cuffs.
I grunted. The cuffs burned. I could also smell the fear and the pain of packmates Iâd grown up with who, thanks to
Lyle Shadowmoon, were no more.
âNever got herself an Alpha before, another guard snickered. He poked me in the belly, and I bared my teeth at
him.
âWEâVE never gotten an Alpha before,â Lyleâs harsh voice growled from the doorway.
The guards spun around and stood at attention. âAlpha Shadowmoon!â
âAh, you do remember who I am. Thatâs heartening.â Lyle leaned on a crutch and motioned for the guards to leave. âGet out.â
They left, and Lyle began to circle me.
âHere for your pound of flesh?â I asked.
âOh, I think you took more than a pound,â Lyle seethed.
âIâd have taken your head if Mommy hadnât stopped me,â I pointed out.
Lyleâs hand lashed out, claws extended, and he slashed my side.
I spun in the air, biting the inside of my cheek against any sound. While the side wound was painful, being spun by your wrists while it felt as though they were on fire was a special treat.
âYouâre not too bright, are you? What kind of a man trades his life for his mateâs father? What kind of ALPHA does that?â Lyle snorted.
âThe kind who deserves her,â Kora said..
Both our heads snapped to the entrance of the outbuilding.
âKora, what the HELL?!â Lyle and I shouted together, though probably for very different reasons. I was concerned. she was here.
He was likely more concerned that she was holding the head of one of the guards by the hair. She dropped it to the ground with a wet thud.
âRelease him,â Kora ordered.
I could see Shawnâs back through the doorway, guarding the entrance. There wasnât much time. âKora, donât worry, Iâve made a deal. The Luna Regent is releasing your father from her spell. You can all go home come moonrise.â
âMason, I love you,â Kora responded without breaking eye contact with Lyle, âbut youâre a big, dumb idiot.â
Lyle bared his teeth at my mate, and that got a growl from me.
âShift change in thirty. Weâre going to want to be gone by then,â Shawn said, turning his face briefly toward the doorway.
âLet him down, Lyle,â Kora demanded again.
A smarmy smile spread over Lyleâs face. âCome on, baby, donât be like that, he said, sashaying toward her. âI was just having a little fun with him.â
âFunâs over.â Kora stabbed a finger in my direction. âHim. Down. NOW.ââ
âAww, but weâre so good together, baby. We can be like that again,â Lyle oozed, running a finger down Koraâs cheek.
His other hand was laid loosely at his back, his claws starting to grow.
âKora!â I yelled.
Lyle slashed. Kora dodged.
âCome here, you little bi tch! I might be willing to lose a challenge to an Alpha, but Iâm not about to be bossed around by you!â Lyle snarled.
Kora rolled under another attack.
I struggled in the cuffs. âShawn! SHAWN!â
âStay back!â Kora growled. âThis is between Lyle and me.â
âListen to the lady,â Lyle chuckled darkly.
While Kora and Lyle circled each other, however, Shawn did come inside. He edged past the combatants to lower me to the floor and take off the silver cuffs.
I rubbed my wrists and was just about to shift and tear Lyle apart when Shawn put a hand on my shoulder.
âLet her work it out,â Shawn said in a low tone.
I gritted my teeth and stood back a bit. Much like Lyleâs mother, however, I had no intention of letting Kora get irreparably hurt.
âWhy couldnât you just be a good little Luna for me? Give me a few pups. We both know weâre compatible in the sack,â Lyle goaded Kora.
âI donât love you. I wonât ever love you. And you are a sad excuse of a mamaâs boy for an Alpha,â Kora shot back.
Lyle gnashed his teeth. âI think youâve gotten a little too comfortable speaking your mind. You werenât this talkative when we were f*cking.â
âThat whole two minutes, huh?â Kora replied.
âYou were mine before you were ever his!â Lyle snapped. âYou belong to me!â
âThatâs not what this says.â Kora rolled her shoulder down so Lyle could get a better look at her mating mark.
Lyleâs growl turned to a roar. âYou had NO right!â
âI had every right. You rejected me. Weâre done. I found someone a thousand times better than you could ever DREAM of being.â Kora said.
With a sound of unholy fury, Lyle launched himself at Kora.
