Chapter 26
The Cursed Alpha’s Mate
âBe careful with Valens,â Clover said once she pulled into a parking spot.
âWhy? What do you mean?â The ride had been silent until she turned up the radio halfway to our destination.
âHe is complicated.â As if I didnât know that already. âHe is not someone you question.â I frowned at that. It wasnât as if I didnât think or know that even.
âI never questioned him,â I said to which she smiled.
âNot directly but when I told you he wanted to see you this morning, you asked âwhat for?â Valens isnât a man you ask to explain himself.â
Iâd only asked on reflex. Heâd never sought me out for anything before so I didnât expect him to send his former lover to me out of the blue.
âI didnât mean it that way.â I was actually questioning her but I didnât add that part.
âAnd heâs also not someone you argue with.â
âThatâs unavoidable, isnât it? We canât live together forever without an argument.â
âOh, youâre argumentative.â She grinned as she said that. âValens likes it when people agree with him but I think I agree with you here. You canât always submit.â
A shiver raced through my spine. I couldnât always submit, I agreed, but I was supposed to. An omega had to submit and Valens told me point blank that he expected me to stand up to everyone but him.
âIâd like to watch you guys together.â She got out of the car as I processed her words.
My wolf was naturally suspicious of Clover considering the relationship I was sure she had with my mate. They were too casual for them not to have been intimate at some point.
I got out of her car just as Celeste pulled up in her black car. She slammed the car door shut and took down her shades before I yelled her name.
âCeleste.â She turned with a small frown on her face. The frown morphed into a beaming smile as she raced towards me.
âAysel! I havenât seen you in ages.â
âHello.â Clover came to stand beside me right as Celeste got close. âYou must be Celeste.â
âClover?â My friend called her name with a slight hitch that went almost unnoticeable but I didnât miss the awe on her face as she stared at Clover.
âIn the flesh.â She beamed at my best friend. Celeste made a small sound at the back of her throat that made Cloverâs smile widen. This was the closest weâd ever come to seeing a celebrity face to face so I understood Celesteâs excitement.
âWhat are you doing here?â I asked my friend to stop her from embarrassing herself.
âI was supposed to meet up with Levi but he cancelled last minute. How about you?â She took glimpses at Clover while she spoke to me.
âI came to buy a few things.â
âFew things? Weâre here to burn some ââ
âCalories.â I cut Clover off before she exposed me. What reason could I give for the alpha to give me his card to buy clothes and lingerie?
âCalories?â Celeste looked me up and down. I didnât have enough fat in my body to burn so I understood where she was coming from.
âMe. Aysel was nice enough to escort me but I need to be more active these days.â Clover cut in.
âOh no. Youâre perfect like this. You donât have to burn anything!â Celeste praised Cloverâs body and her general person as we walked into the mall. She kept a long, steady string of praises until she suddenly asked a question that made me stumble.
âAre you and the prince together?â She asked but the question wasnât directed at me. It was directed at Clover.
âOh, no. Thatâs all a misunderstanding.â Clover laughed, waving her off.
âNo?â My friend sounded disappointed. I followed silently beside them while my wolf growled. âBut youâd look so good together!â
âLetâs go here.â I pointed at a random store to save myself the torture of Celeste telling Clover that sheâd look good with my mate.
Goodness gracious, when would it end? When would I become worthy of being claimed publicly? When would Valens decide I was worth claiming before the world?
âYou want to â you want to go into that store?â My skin turned crimson when I looked at the store I supposedly wanted to go into. I would never be able to live this down!
It was an adult store.
âLetâs go into this one.â Clover intertwined our elbows and pulled me towards the store beside the one I first pointed at. âThey sell really nice bracelets.â
âYeah, really nice and freaking expensive bracelets!â Celeste pulled me back. âWe canât afford them.â
âI have my ways. Trust me.â Clover pulled us into the store. I walked around with the girls, feeling left out as they gushed about this and that when all I saw were simple bracelets worth as much as a thousand. Why in the goddessâ name they were so expensive, I couldnât say.
âHere, this will look really good on you.â Clover signalled a worker over to put a rose gold bracelet on my wrist. It was one of the least expensive things in the store but it still cost too much.
âHe â I never planned to buy a bracelet,â I said pointedly to Clover. I was supposed to be getting a new wardrobe. I didnât think that included expensive jewellery. I didnât want to add gold-digging tendencies to my list of faults in Valensâ sight
âIt fits you. You should buy it.â Celeste nodded her head vigorously to show that she agreed with the decision. I had no choice but to buy it.
âLook at this. Itâs perfect for a man,â Celeste exclaimed. It was a simple, masculine ring. âYou should get this for Valens.â It would be a good idea but I didnât have the money and I didnât want to get him gifts using his money.
âOh wow.â Clover gasped, picking up the ring on display with reverence. âIt looks like the perfect size for him too.â
âVa- Alpha Valens isnât a man that likes jewellery.â
âHow would you know?â Celeste asked. âClover knows what the Alpha likes. Theyâve been together for a long time.â I opened my mouth on a snarl but snapped it shut.
âIâm not with Valens.â Clover let out a light laugh.
âWhy not? Youâre his lucky clover.â
âIâm just Clover. Valens already found someone great for him.â
âYouâre the perfect person for him.â
âI am not with Valens.â Her voice lost the light playfulness, becoming stern. Celeste apologized and never mention Valens again.
I didnât miss the fact that the ring Celeste suggested followed Clover to checkout.
âHow are things with Levi?â I asked my friend. Her big smile faded off her face in an instant, her mood turning sour.
âThis is the second time heâs pulled out of a hangout at the last minute for no valid reason.â She pouted. âI no longer believe he is my mate.â
âYou feel your mate close?â Clover piped into our conversation. âMaybe he is one of the men from my pack,â she continued when Celeste nodded. My best friend and I burst into laughter.
âOh ââ I started
âHell no!â Celeste finished.
âCeleste hates muscled men.â All the men in the Alpha Pack came in varying sizes of thick muscles, Jabari being the king of the thickly muscled men.
âIâm not looking for a mate that can benchpress someone ten times my weight, neither do I want to be with a domineering one.â
âEvery woman with her taste then.â Clover laughed. âBut the men in my pack are good men. Youâd be lucky to have one of them as your mate.
âYeah, no. I think Iâll pass. Iâll have to leave now, Ay-babe.â Celeste gave me a hug. âI was going to wander aimlessly through the mall until I saw you. You always make my day.â She kissed my cheek and let go with a smile. âI have to get back to the hospital now. See you guys later.â She waved at us before rushing out of the mall.
âYour friend is great,â Clover commented. She didnât even know the extent of how true that statement was.
We walked through the mall then, picking up piles of shopping bags, putting a huge dent in Valensâ account. The more I tried to stop Clover from recking my mate, the more she reminded me he was a prince. He inherited a massive fortune and after a hundred years, his acquired assets surpassed his inheritance.
âI think â lingerie â â my skin burned when I pulled Clover to a lingerie shop.
âOh, yes! Lingerie! We saved the best for last. Come one, letâs get you some s3xy red lingerie.â My heart slammed with Artemisâ rage.
Whatever Clover did, Artemis found a problem with. Personally, I found her agreeable, a bit authoritative but considering her life experience, it was understandable and she was far better than Astrid. Clover was a nice girl and she genuinely cared about me but Artemis couldnât see past her jealousy.
âIâm so hungry. Iâll go secure a space for us to eat. Wait on this queue while I get us something to eat before I collapse.â She left the mall with hunger dragging her feet.
I stayed in the queue for checkout until it got to my turn then I found myself in trouble.
âThief! How did you get the Princeâs card!â The cashier exclaimed when I handed her Valensâ card. The minute she took over from the other person that was behind the counter a few minutes ago, I knew there would be a problem.
Sasha the cashier was one of Skylarâs minions from high school. Her life lost its relevance when we graduated but it seemed she still felt the need to bully me. In a few minutes, I found myself surrounded. Someone called the police while others rained insults on me and prevented me from leaving the store.
