Chapter 82
The Cursed Alpha’s Mate
âWhat happened to her?â I asked Valens when I successfully got Celeste settled in. She was having a bath now so I went to grab her some clothes.
Sheâd refused to speak when I asked her what was wrong. Sheâd cried the more I asked her if anything had happened. The only coherent words I got out of her were âI donât want him!â
I assumed it had something to do with Jabari but still couldnât figure out how my mate fit into the mix.
âDid you know she is Jabariâs mate?â He asked in response to my question, raising his head from his computer.
âYeah, Jabari told me,â I replied. He scowled.
ââAnd you couldnât tell me?â Why did it sound like he was accusing me?
âWhy? It didnât even occur to me that Jabari hadnât told you.â I shrugged, pulling out a nightdress for my friend. It was bright, a sunflower yellow that I hoped would brighten her up a bit.
âHe told me today. He was nervous about seeing her so I offered to go along with him.â
He sighed, pinching his nose. âYou should have seen the way she looked at him.â
âHow?â I could already imagine but I asked anyway.
âIt was something of a mix of disgust, hatred, and fear. She looked at him as if he was an ugly monster whoâd ruined her life. Then she just â ran off.â He looked appalled. âShe ran into the streets and almost got run over. When we caught up with her, she was screaming and crying. We didnât even say anything to her.â He looked upset as he spoke.
âDid Jabari try talking to her?
âHe did but ended up making things worse.â He scrubbed a palm down his face. âIt was a hustle getting her here.â
ââShe has her reasons,â I said, wondering if I made things worse by asking Jabari to try talking to her. I hoped I hadnât made beings worse. I hadnât seen Celeste break down like this before.
âJabari is a good man. Why would she react to him like that?â I shrugged as I escaped from his unending questions.
When I got back to Celesteâs room, she was shivering, a towel wrapped around her. She took the pajamas from me without a word.
After putting them on, she crawled into bed and under the covers.
âWill you eat at the dining or should I bring dinner up?â I asked when she disappeared under the covers.
âIm not hungry,â she answered after a second of silence.
âDonât play with me. You havenât eaten and you will eat. Iâm only asking if youâll eat here or at the dining,â I said.
She was silent for a long time after that. The covers started to shake and I knew she was crying again. I approached her but she emerged slowly from underneath the covers, her eyes red and puffy.
âWhy doesnât anyone care what I want?â Her voice broke as did my heart.
âPlease donât say that.â I got into bed and sat next to her, my shoulder brushing hers. âI care what you want. We all do.â
âBut I donât want him. I donât want him!â Her voice rose, hysteria setting in. I put a hand around her shoulders.
âAnd itâs okay not to want him. No one would dare force you to be with someone you donât want to be with, mate or not.â
âEven the goddess didnât care. She just â gave me the last person I would ever want. I â and heâs the Beta while Iâm just the girl from a bad family. Heâs above me. How can I say no? What if- what if -â
âNo, no what ifâs. Jabari is the last person to force someone to mate and even if he were, Iâm above him. I would never let that happen,â I assured her.
âYou â and the Alpha â
âWould be stupid to say otherwise,â I cut off her sentence. âYou donât have to be with him if you donât want to. Itâs as simple as that.â
âIt canât be,â she countered. âI want it to â I want to believe you but â my life is ruined.â
She smacked her head against the headboard with the force with which she leaned back.
âYouâve been here for me all along. I wonât leave you to deal with this on your own. If you donât want to be with him, then you donât have to,â I said, squeezing her hand.
âBut donât you see â Heâs the Beta. How can I continue in this pack with him? Will I be forced to leave? Iâve been here all my life. I donât want to leave!â
âNo one is making you leave. Youâre thinking too far. Take a breathe, babe.â She breathed in deeply and then paused. Then she started to suffocate. âLet it out.â Horror froze my b***d when I saw her turn purple.
Iâd never seen Celeste break down like this before. Iâd never seen her â Iâd never seen her lose herself like this and it made me realize how much Iâd been wrong about her in the past. Even as her best friend, Iâd always thought she didnât have any problems. She had a family and she had love so she had no struggles in life. She didnât have my struggles but she had hers and I felt like an awful person for not thinking about that till now.
âMy life is over.â She let out a breath, her head falling to my shoulders. We stayed in that position for a while, with me trying to convince her that she wasnât losing her life because she was mated to someone she didnât want.
âDo you think Iâm overreacting?â She asked after a while. âIâm being unreasonable, arenât I?â
She raised her head with a sniff.
âNo, you arenât overreacting. Youâre feeling cornered and thatâs perfectly understandable seeing as youâve been predestined to someone you donât want without any foreseeable way out.â
âI could just reject him,â she said but I knew she knew that wouldnât work.
âHe would never accept your rejection,â I told her, not wanting to lie. âHe has waited for you for years,â I added.
âHeâs a good man.â It was exactly what Valens said a short while ago but I didnât know if I was supposed to be agreeing with her. âBut I donât want him.â
âAnd thatâs perfectly fine,â I assured her yet again.
âIs it, though? The goddess gave him to me.
Heâs supposed to be the best person for me,â she looked more miserable as she said that.
âWhat if rejecting him turns out to be the worst thing I ever do? Iâve waited for my mate for a while too, you know?â Her eyes were b***d red when she said that.
âIf you donât want him, then you donât have to be with him but if itâs trauma that you havenât dealt with stopping you, then we will get you help, I promise.â She looked away from me.
âI know he is a good man. He is dedicated to his duty and will never compromise his honour,â she sounded like sheâd said this to herself countless times, as if she was trying to convince someone, perhaps the part of her that didnât see a reason to be with Jabari,âI donât â I donât know what to do.â
âCeleste, what did your parents do when Mr.Vann abused you?â Her hands shivered and she clasped them together. I put my hand on them, squeezing.
âThey- Well, they made him apologize to me, then the Alpha had him whipped and he was subsequently banished from the pack with his teaching license revoked.â
âWhat did they do for you?â I emphasized thelast part.
âI got to choose what they used in whipping him and â and how many stokes he got. My mum got me a doll and my father got me some device â it was to use to defend myself in the future.â
âHow often did you get to speak about it?â
âWe went to the oracle and I got to vent to the goddess.â I gawked at her.
âAnd what did the goddess say?â I asked, incredulous.
âWhat? She only speaks to her oracles. She said nothing.â
âIn a nutshell, you never got help,â I concluded.
âHow do you feel when you see Jabari?â
âHe makes my skin crawl,â she said without her hesitation. âHe looks too much like Mr. Vann. I try to tell myself that heâs nothing like that but â I â they look the same.â She buried her face in her palms, letting out a small scream.
âHelp me, Aysel. Iâm confused.â
