Chapter 43
In Love With My Evil Stepbrother
Chapter 43: Arranged Marriage Oh. My. God.
I almost donât know if I should laugh or spit in her face. But thereâs one thing Iâm sure of: she has absolutely no self-respect. She can reduce herself to Easonâs play toy all she wants. Iâm not following her example.
Yet before I can voice out my thought, Eason speaks up before me, âVal just cut if off.â
Valerie widens her eyes in surprise, as if she didnât expect Eason to go against her. But Eason has already risen up from his seat and walked up to her with one hand in his pocket. He takes the dress from Valerieâs hand and hands it back to mom with a faint smile, âMrs. Ramirez, you have really a good taste.
Iâm sure everyone would fall for this dress. But we shouldnât step in like this. Sorry about that.â
Momâs face remains cold even in front of his compliment. Iâm sure sheâs just as offended as I am.
âDonât worry about it dear,â mom gives him a polite yet frosty smile. âIf your girlfriend likes it, itâs totally fine she can keep it. Like I said, there are plenty of other choices for us to choose from.â
She ignores Easonâs hand and turns to me, âNat sweetheart. Are you ready to leave?â I immediately stand up, âYeah totally.â
I follow mom and march outside without even looking back. I didnât change my mind about Eason simply because he stopped Valerieâs madness. Heâs still an asshole. I guess he was just embarrassed by Valerieâs behavior.
When we left the store, mom lets out a long sigh, âDear lord-what was that? That girl has absolutely no courtesy.â âYeahâ¦thatâs Valerie.â I respond with a bitter tone. Guess Eason really likes the bitch type.
âAnd sheâs in the same school as you right? Has she ever treated you badly?â âA bit. But I donât care much about what her.â
âYou are doing the right thing, sweetie. Just ignore her,â Mom gently pats my shoulder.â Because soon enough thereâll be someone else to take care of her.â
I can guess whom my mom is referring to, âYou are talking about Easonâs mom, right?â
âYes. Shawn mentioned it to me onceâ¦Caroline has picked Easonâs marriage partner a long time ago.
He can date whoever he wants when heâs still young. But you guys are going to college next year, so I guess Caroline will introduce the girl to Eason very soon. She will definitely get rid of any cheap chicks around Eason before that girl comes into the picture.â
My mouth parts in shock hearing this.
What the fuckâ¦arranged marriage? And this is already the 21st centuries? âAre you serious?â I gasp in a rather shrill voice, âA marriage partner? Is Eason aware? Is he OK with this?â
Mom gives me a suspicious look and I quickly hide away the panic on my face, âI- I was just curious, nothing else.â
âWell, Eason doesnât have much choice, isnât he? Caroline Griswold is a very strong woman. If she has picked the right daughter-in-law, Iâm positive that sheâll force Eason down the aisle if she has to. And this is how upper society works.â
âBut you and Mr. Ramirez married out of love,â I point out urgently. âShawn is the head of the family, so he doesnât have to listen to anyone. But thereâs a long way ahead of Eason before he can officially take control of his own life,â mom pauses and looks at me again. âSince when do you care so much about Eason?â My lips twist with bitterness, âI donâtâ¦just a little curious.â
How naïve of me to actually believe that thereâs a future ahead of us.
Eason already has his life all planned out. He will probably go to Harvard and take over the company after graduation. Then he will marry the girl that his mother has chosen for him and have beautiful children with her.
What we have is nothing more than a short summer fling.
When we get home, I go straight up to my room and lock myself in. Mom calls me for dinner once, but I simply tell her that Iâm not hungry. Iâve lost all my appetite because of what happened this afternoon.
I lie on my bed staring at the ceiling spacing out, till someone knocks on my door. âMom, I told you. Iâm not hungry!â I raise my voice. Then the doorknob turns, and someone just open the door open and walks in. I jerk around and gaze in terror on him, âHow did you I locked the door!â
Eason shows me the key in his hand and then shoves it back into his pocket. He closes the door behind him, walks over and sits down on the bed, like heâs the owner of this room.
âExcuse me? Hello?â I sit up and snap. âDid I invite you in?â
âI invited myself,â he raises his brow with a wicked grin on his lips. âAnd you didnât ask for my permission the first time, remember?â
I exhale a long breathe in frustration. I donât have the energy to deal with him today.
âJust say what you want. OK?â
He shrugs and places a nicely wrapped box on my bed. I instantly recognize the label.
Iâm speechless. âPlease tell me itâs not that silver dress.â
âWell, no surprise this time,â he smiles. âYou like it?â
âYou fucking kidding me?â I kick away the box with my feet. âYou really think I still want it? Itâs already tainted by your dear girlfriend. Give it to her. Iâm sure sheâll keep it somewhere nice and high and probably worship it three times a day.â
Eason sneers. He folds his arms in front of his chest and says indifferently, âValerie is not my girlfriend.â
âThen you are just a fucking fuckboy who deserves to fuck yourself in hell!â I say sternly.â Leave me alone.â
He laughs out loud, âthatâs a lot of fwords.â
I bite my lower lip in anger. Iâve always wanted to hear him explain his relationship with Valerie. But now Iâve realized that even if itâs not Valerie, there will be someone else. He is simply too much for me.
âYouâve given me the dress. Mission completed. Now can you leave?â I ask in an irritated tone.
He sits there in silence, his beautiful green eyes trailing across my face. Tension gradually builds up at this moment and I feel my cheek getting hotter under his intense gaze.
No girls can last more than ten seconds under that gaze. I have to pinch myself to remain sane.
Eventually he speaks up in a gentle tone, âHey. Are you done being mad at me? Are we still on that break?â
âLet me give you a dating language 101. âOn-a-breakâ means breaking up. Get it?â I say that quickly and feel pretty proud of myself.
