Chapter 32
Melody Strikes Back
Chapter 32
But Astrid dared not say more. Ken was a madman. No one knew what he might do in a fit of impulse.
After scolding Ken, she turned to Fairlee and said, âYou surely didnât expect things to turn out like this today. Donât take Kenâs words to heart. Take Barclay to the hospital for an examination. Weâll cover his medical expensesâ
âDo you think we canât afford the medical expenses?â Fairlee gritted her teeth. She wanted to say something more harsh but swallowed her words and said instead, âThis isnât over yet. When Barclay recovers, I hope Mabel and Melody will cooperate with my investigation.â
Melody narrowed her eyes. âAnytime.â She had a clear conscience and was not afraid of any investigation.
Mabel, however, kept crying pitifully, which annoyed Melody, so she looked away.
Fairlee snorted coldly at them, then ordered her people to carry Barclay out.
Barclay wanted to curse at Mabel and Melody, but a stern look from Fairlee silenced him. âHave you not embarrassed us enough?!*
Barclay moved his lips but dared not say more.
As they passed Melody, Fairlee slowed her pace. âMelody, we shall meet again.â
Melody met Fairleeâs gaze without fear, her expression indifferent. Fairlee was furious but could do nothing. After all, she was at the Swansonâs. She gritted her teeth and followed the stretcher out.
Due to the chaos Barclay had caused, the birthday party ended early, and Astrid saw the guests off.
Meanwhile, Yolanda whispered to Mabel, âGo apologize to Melody and Mrs. Fox.
Mabel, with a heavy heart, went up to Melody and Maria, her eyes red from crying. Sorry, Grandma, Melody. I messed up and fell for Barclayâs nonsense. Please forgive me. I wonât be so gullible next time, I promise.â
Mabel was quite the actress. As she spoke, she shed a few perfectly timed tears and finally bowed to Maria.
Maria took a few deep breaths and then sighed heavily. âIt is clear now. Itâs all Barclayâs fault. It has nothing to do with you. Thereâs nothing to
apologize for.â
Her words implied she did not want to pursue the matter further. The truth, at this point, didnât matter anymore.
Mabel was overjoyed and quickly stepped up to support Maria, pushing Melody aside. Melody almost lost her balance. She pressed her lips together slightly and said nothing.
She wasnât happy but didnât blame Maria either. She knew Maria was not being partial to Mabel but trying to protect the Fox familyâs
reputation.
Melody lowered her gaze, thinking of Ken, who had helped her twice. She wanted to thank him but couldnât find him.
Yolanda joined in, while constantly criticizing Barclay.
Maria, annoyed, frowned and said, âEnough, Donât mention this again.â
Seeing Mariaâs displeased face, Yolanda reluctantly fell silent.
At that moment, Astrid came back after seeing off the important guests. When she saw the four of them still there, she quickly put on a fake smile. âMrs. Fox, Iâm really sorry about what went down today. Let me make it up to you by walking you out.â

She said this because she wanted to get rid of Melody who had embarrassed her today.

Several noble ladies had asked her about Kenâs marriage, and she had answered them vaguely. She couldnât feel at ease as long as Melody was around.
Astrid gestured for them to walk in front of her when Maria spoke up. âWalk them out. Iâll take Melody to see Margaret.â
Astridâs smile faltered. Yolanda and Mabel also looked displeased. They had long sensed Mariaâs favoritism, but this was out of line. Both Mabel and Melody were her granddaughters, and Maria only wanted to take Melody to see Margaret.
Yolandaâs arm muscles tensed in anger, and veins popped.
Astrid, forcing a smile, said, âMrs. Fox, Margaret is resting now. Perhaps you could come another day? Iâll arrange a good time for you. You know, sheâs not in a good condition.â
âDonât get me wrong. It isnât my idea.â Maria glanced at Melody. âMargaret wants to see Melody herself. I havenât lost my mind.â
If it wasnât for pushing Melody to marry into the Swanson family and Margaretâs request, Maria wouldnât have brought Melody to visit. The fewer people who knew, the smaller the chance of the secret getting out. But she trusted Melody with the secret.
Astridâs face darkened, but since it was Margaretâs idea and Maria insisted, she had to comply reluctantly. âVery well, Iâll take you upstairs. Margaret is often in a bad mood. I hope you can talk with herâ¦â
Astrid really didnât want Maria to meet Margaret because she was afra
afraid Maria would talk Margaret into giving her blessing for Melody and Kenâs marriage. Astrid thought this would totally ruin Kenâs reputation and make him a laughingstock in Silverlake and maybe even the whole country.
Damn it!â she cursed
mwardly.
