Perhaps she would really be a good choice, her face would keep her from having to go out in public, and her lack of education and manners could be improved over time. The child will have tutors at home, And itâs unlikely for her to mess around and disgrace the family with her looks.â With this thought on her mind, Margaretâs gaze towards Melody softened.
âMelody, come over here. Let me take a good look at you.â The last thing Melody wanted was to marry Ulric again. She didnât intend for Margaret to like her. In fact, she hoped Margaret would dislike her, so she didnât have to marry Ulric.
But at the same time, she didnât want Maria to be disappointed in her.
While she was in a dilemma, she thought of the check Ken gave her and the way he stood here just now.
Melody balled up her fists and made up her mind not to be rude to Margaret, even though Ulric was a jerk.
d, âYes, Mrs. Swanson.â
She walked to Margaret and said,
âGood girlâ Margaret held Melodyâs hand, and Melody politely returned the gesture.
But in the next second, Melodyâs expression changed slightly, though she quickly returned to normal, making it hard to detect her fleeting
reaction.
Margaret held Melodyâs hand and asked her in detail, âHow are you doing in the countryside? How far have you gone in
âIâm doing fine, and Iâve finished college.â She answered each question, but her responses were halfâtruths.

Life in the countryside was really tough for her. Her adoptive parents in the countryside, probably because of Yolanda, treated her like a free servant since she was young and often didnât give her enough food. This made her suffer from hunger and cold, and she ended up much smaller than other kids her age.
If she hadnât met her teacher, she might have been abused to death by that couple. Later, when the couple sought her teacherâs help for an illness, he took her in as his apprentice. Those days were a mix of joy and bitterness, far from the casual way she now described them.
Astrid watched Melody and Margaret chatting, growing increasingly anxious, and her expression darkening.
is margaret so affected by her pregnancy hormones that her judgment is impaired? How could she sit there chatting with such an ugly girl without fearing nightmares? Astrid thought.
When Margaret asked if Melody was with someone, Astrid cut in. âMargaret, youâre gonna embarrass her. Itâs her privacy. Youâre not thinking about the ridiculous engagement, are you?â
Margaretâs expression changed, and she frowned at Astrid. âAstrid, some manners! There are guests here. Have you forgotten evrything Iâve taught you?â
In this household, Margaretâs authority was supreme. Seeing Margaret genuinely angry, Astrid was startled. But she couldnât let Ulric marry Melody. He was her only son
Thinking of this, Astrid bit her lip in frustration, lowering her voice, âI havenât forgotten anything. I just feel wranged!â
âWhat are you wronged about?â Margaretâs frown deepened.
Astrid gritted her teeth, determined to stand her ground for her son, even if it meant confronting Margaret.
âOf course I feel wronged: You know how worried Iâve been about Ulric after his accident. Now, you want Ulric to marry Melody against his will. How am I supposed to feel? After all these years, have you never accepted me and Ulric?â Astrid said.

âYouâ¦youâ¦â Margaret was so angry she felt a headache coming on..
A servant quickly poured Margaret a cup of water. After drinking it, Margaret managed to calm down.
Maria couldnât bear to watch anymore and suggested, âMargaret, maybe Melody and I should come back another day?â
âNo need. Weâll settle this today,â Margaret decided firmly.
Astridâs eyes widened, almost going frantic. âmargaret!â
âSay no more!â Margaret looked away and continued, âThe engagement doesnât involve your son. I plan to have Ken marry Melody.â

âWhat?â
Melody and Astrid both exclaimed simultaneously, their tones filled with surprise.
But Astridâs surprise had a hint of delight. She had no reason to stop Ken rom marrying Melody.
âGrandmaâ¦â Melody turned to look at Maria, feeling chaotic inside.
Maria remained silent, lost in thought.
Just then, Margaret suddenly pulled back the covers. Astrid was taken aback, unable to stop her. Melody saw Margaretâs noticeably swollen belly.
âMelody, given my close relationship with your grandmother, I wonât hide this from you. The urgency is for the sake of my unborn child.â Margaret paused and explained their plan in detail.
After finishing, Margaret looked at Melody, who showed no sign of surprise, as if she already knew.
âYouâ¦â Margaret had just uttered a word when Melody spoke first. âIf itâs because of this, thereâs no need for me to marry into the Swanson Family.â
Margaret frowned, feeling a bit dissatisfied.
Astrid seized the opportunity to mock. âDo you think our Family isnât good enough for you? Margaret, did you hear that? She doesnât appreciate your kindness.â
âMelody!â Mariaâs face also showed displeasure. âWhat are you talking about?â
