Chapter 44
Melody Strikes Back
Chapter 44
Melody felt herself falling, subconsciously reaching out to grab onto something, but all she grasped was sparse soil.
Am I going to die here?â thought she.
âMelody!â A deep voice accompanied the driverâs exclamation.
Immediately, Melody felt her ankle gripped by a large hand, halting her descent. Then, her entire body was pulled back with force.
âWhat are you standing there for? Help!â Kenâs voice rang out.
Hearing Kenâs voice, Melodyâs heart, hanging in suspense, inexplicably settled, even though she was still dangling from the cliff with only her feet being held.
On the cliff, the driver quickly recovered from his shock and rushed over to grab Melodyâs other foot.
Melody was slim, and even though she didnât provide any support, the two men quickly pulled her up.
As
s soon as Melodyâs feet were firmly on the ground, she heard a loud noise from the edge of the cliff. The large piece of ground she had just been lying on collapsed, and the gravel and soil plummeted downwards, making crashing sounds as they hit the ground below.
Melody, too focused on picking the herbs, hadnât heard the footsteps of the two men. Now seeing their presence, she felt her eyes moisten.
She couldnât help but feel terrified-
If Ken hadnât appeared in time to grab her foot, she would have ended up like those falling rocks, crashing down to the ground.
After the shock, Melodyâs emotions gradually calmed down,
She reached up to touch her forehead and found it covered in cold sweat, even the loose strands of hair on her forehead were damp.
She couldnât help but find it somewhat amusing.
She had already died once, yet even in the face of lifeâthreatening danger, she still got scared like this
She really wasnât strong enough, not fearless enoughâ¦
At this moment, Kenâs cold voice entered her ears-
âWhy are you laughing? Are you crazy?â Even he was scared enough, only now recovering his senses. When he raised his eyes, he saw Melody standing there laughing foolishly.
What a crazy woman!â He had never seen such a crazy woman before.
âIâ¦I didnâtâ¦â Melody was about to explain when she heard Kenâs cold voice again, âListen to me, Melody! If you want to die, go ahead, but you must cure my grandmotherâs illness first before you do. If I ever see you doing something dangerous like this again, be careful.â
Ken didnât want to admit it, but he was worried about Melody.
Regardless of what her motives were for wanting to cure his grandmother, just based on her courage earlier, he admired her. Not many girls would dare to be so bold, risking their lives just to pick a herb, hanging alone on a cliff like that.
But he had a naturally stubborn personality, coupled with the influence of his family background, or perhaps, he simply didnât know how to
care for someone.

So even though he was actually concerned, his words came out twisted.
When Melody heard this, she couldnât help but frown. âKen, have you always been this unpleasant? If it werenât for picking herbs for your grandmother, would I have risked my life in this wilderness? Is it so difficult to ask if Iâm okay? After all, I saved you once, and I havenât done anything to harm you. Why do you always treat me with such an attitude? Are you even a man?â
Melody became more and more angry as she spoke, feeling a bit aggrieved in her heart, her tone filled with gunpowder.
âJust by listening to your voice, it doesnât sound like anything serious has happened. And as for whether Iâm a man or not, it seems to have nothing to do with you,â said Ken.
âYou- Melody choked, her face turning red.
She wasnât very good at arguing, especially against Kenâs venomous tongue, so she simply ignored him, turning to the driver and bowing politely. âThank you.â
The driver was about to speak when he felt Kenâs icy gaze.
His spine stiffened, and he awkwardly said, âNo, no, I didnât help much. It was Mr. Ken who acted fast and grabbed you first. He was also the first to notice you below.â
He implied in his words that Ken was the one Melody should thank
Melody naturally understood this, her lips pressed into a straight line.
She was well aware that she had been spared from danger because of Ken, but Kenâs words just now were too harsh, and she couldnât bring herself to say âthank youâ to him right now.
Melody bit her lip and glanced at Ken, trying to force herself to squeeze out a âthank you,â but she saw Kenâs intense gaze fixed on her as he asked, âYou were gathering herbs, where are they? Did they fall down?â
He didnât continue the previous topic, which slightly relieved Melody, and cautiously stepped toward the edge of the cliff.
The flowers of the Sinkwood Fragrant had been hit by the falling rocks, knocking off a few blossoms, but the branches of the Sandalwood Chimonanthus remained intact, and its roots were not exposed.
She pointed down and said, âThey didnât fall down. Theyâre still here.â
âGo take a look,â Ken said, turning his head slightly. The driver hurried forward to inspect.
After a quick glance, the driver looked back at Melody in surprise. âRhododendron? Miss, are you looking for Rhododendron?â
âThis isnât Rhododendron.â Melody shook her head. âItâs called Sandalwood Chimonanthus, the best herb for soothing.â
The driver didnât understand these things, but upon closer inspection, he realized that the plant indeed wasnât Rhododendron. Although the flowers resembled Rhododendron, the leaves were like pine needles, though not as hard.
The driver immediately compared the distance and then reported to Ken, âWe donât have any tools. We canât reach it from this distance. Even if we manage to reach it, itâs very dangerous, just like what Miss Melody experienced earlier.â
Ken nodded slightly, then made a series of calls, tersely instructing, âPinpoint my location, come over immediately.â
After that, he hung up without waiting for a response.
Melody hesitated and said, âAre you calling someone to pick it? Maybe we should just forget it, itâs too dangerous. There should be other

places on this mountain; letâs go look for them.â
As she spoke, Ken gave her a faint look, as if to say, âYou also understand itâs dangerous?â
Melody inexplicably felt guilty, swallowing before continuing, âIf it were just now, maybe I could have pulled up the Sinkwood Fragrant. But now, that side has collapsed, we canât even touch it. Even with tools, it would still be very dangerous, and another collapse like earlier could easily happen. So, we shouldâ¦â
She hadnât finished her sentence when a rumbling sound came from the sky.
Thunder on a clear day?
She followed the sound and saw a helicopter approaching.
Her heart skipped a beat, and she turned to meet Kenâs gaze.
âSo, what should we do?â he asked.
It was obvious he was asking intentionally.
Melody cursed inwardly, âThis stubborn man!â
