Chapter 55
Melody Strikes Back
O
Chapter 55
Melody narrowed her eyes slightly as she looked at the servant blocking her path, appearing as if she had been waiting for her arrival.
âAstrid Swanson sure is ruthless, Melody thought. I didnât expect her to take action so quickly: Thinking back to her previous life, she then realized that even if Ulric and Mabel hadnât conspired to kill her, life under Astrid as her motherâin- law would have been far from pleasant.
With that, a cold glint flickered in Melodyâs eyes, but she quickly masked it with a bright smile. âThatâs very thoughtful, but thereâs no need. Before I made the prescription, I asked Mrs. Margaret about any allergies, so you donât have to worry,â she
said.
The servantâs smile faltered momentarily, but she quickly regained her composure. âItâs better to be safe than sorry in case Mrs. Margaret forgets something. So please hand over the medicine so I can let the family doctor check it,â she said, reaching out to snatch the tray from Melody.
Melody smoothly dodged the servantâs hand. Unable to stop herself, the servant lunged forward and fell, gasping in pain as she hit the ground.
Watching the servant fall, Melody smiled faintly and said, âNo need to kneel before me. Iâm no royalty, and I havenât prepared any gifts. Her tone was lightly mocking.
Realizing she appeared to be kneeling and bowing to Melody, the servantâs expression turned grim as she scrambled to stand up.
Feeling humiliated, the servant could no longer muster a smile. Instead, she glared at Melody and said, âMiss Fox, what do you mean by that?â
Melodyâs gaze turned sharp. âI should be asking what youâre trying to do,â she said. âEveryone knows that herbal medicine. loses its efficacy as it cools down, so what are you trying to achieve by delaying my delivery to Mrs. Margaret? Shouldnât you want her to recover quickly? What are your intentions?â Melody questioned, her tone stern and authoritative.
As Melody glared at the servant, her previously serene demeanor transformed into an icy, commanding aura. The servant, taken aback, suddenly felt as if she were standing before Ken, known for his cold and intimidating presence.
The stern look on Melodyâs face left the servant momentarily speechless, unable to find the words to respond. When the servant finally regained her composure, she forced a smile and said, âYou must have misunderstood me. I genuinely hope for Mrs. Margaretâs quick recovery. Why wouldnât I want her to get well soon?â
The servant feared being blamed for not wanting Margaret to get better, which would be difficult for her to handle as a low- ranking servant in the Swanson family.
Once she defended herself, the servant clarified, âI didnât suggest that the doctor check the medicine. It was Mrs. Astridâs idea. If you refuse to cooperate, Iâll need to inform her. Observing Melodyâs reluctance to hand over the medicine, the servant had to mention Astridâs involvement.
Melody remained silent, seemingly contemplating the servantâs words. During that pause, the servant noticed Melodyâs gaze shifting, causing her heart to race inexplicably.
Suddenly, Melodyâs face lit up with a smile. âOh, so it was Mrs. Astridâs idea. How considerate of her.â
Upon hearing Melodyâs response, the servantâs heart started racing. Why do I feel like Miss Fox knew about Mrs. Astridâs plan? No, that couldnât be possible, she thought.
Forcing a smile, the servant replied. âYes, Mrs. Astrid always cared for Mrs. Margaret. So, please give me the medicine, and Iâll hurry to the doctor and bring it back before it cools down.â

Melody shook her head and refused to hand over the medicines again. The servant recognized Melodyâs persistence and knew she had to be tougher in her words.
With a stern and assertive tone, she declared, âMiss Fox, remember that youâre not in your own home but in the Swanson household. If you refuse to hand over the medicine for inspection, it implies youâre hiding something!â
âWhy are you two still standing there? Seize her now! The servant barked her command at the two bodyguards stationed by
the door.
The bodyguards exchanged uncertain glances, unsure whether to follow the order. After all, this woman was the doctor personally appointed by Margaret for her treatment.
While they hesitated, Melody spoke up, âYou misunderstood me Itâs not that I wonât let you take it for inspection, but going back and forth is a waste of time. Plus, itâs quite chilly today, and the medicine could cool down quickly.â âHow about this? Iâll take the medicine to Mrs. Margaret, and you can fetch the doctor to come to her room, Melody suggested.
âNo, that wonât do!â the servant instantly rejected.
âWhy not?â Melody asked, looking genuinely puzzled. âAll you want is for the doctor to inspect it, right? I suggested that you bring the doctor over, but you rejected it. Do you have an ulterior motive for taking the medicine away? Are you planning to add something while Iâm not looking?â
The servant jumped and immediately denied it. âOf course notishe exclaimed.
âAlright, then, Melody said with a smile. Til go to Mrs. Margaretâs room and wait for the doctor. With that, she entered the elevator with the medicines.
While the servant was still fretting about what to do, the elevator doors had already closed, and she had lost the opportunity. to stop Melody. Left with no choice, she hurried off to report the situation to Astrid.
Upon hearing what had happened, Astrid flew into a rage and stopped the servant. The sound echoed through the room, leaving the servant trembling in fear. Though her cheek stung, she didnât dare make a sound.
Seeing the servantâs cowardly demeanor, Astrid became even angrier and delivered another slap across her face.
âUseless creature! You canât even handle such a small matter!â Astrid bellowed. âHow can younger than you? Whatâs the point of keeping you around?â
you not deal with someone so much
âYes, itâs all my fault⦠the servant whimpered. Feeling aggrieved, she tried to defend herself, âThe woman was very cautious, and it felt like she was onto something. No matter what I said, she refused to give me the medicine. I was afraid she would get suspicious, so I had to let her go.â
âSuspicious? Sheâs just a girl from the countryside who knew nothing about our familyâs situation. How could she possibly suspect anything? Just admit your incompetencel Astrid reprimanded the servant, her hand reaching out for another slap âEnough!â Ulric shouted, his voice cold.
Astridâs hand stopped midâair as she turned to look at her son.
âItâs not her fault, Ulric said calmly. âI suspect Ken had already bribed her into his side. He must have reminded her to be careful, hence her being so reluctant to hand over the medicine
Frowning, Astrid replied, âKen bribed her!â
âIf not, why would she be so wary?â Ulric said.
âWhat should we do now? What we are giving her is a slowâacting poison, so it needs to be taken continuously for at least three days to be effective, Astrid said.

Ulric lit a cigarette and spoke calmly after a few puffs, âThereâs no need to rush. We still have time left within the week, donât we? She may have avoided it today, but she may not hold out for the rest of the week.â
Astrid felt slightly better after hearing Ulricâs thoughts and ordered the servant to leave the room.
Relieved, the servant hastily left the room, making sure to shut the door tightly behind her.
