Chapter 23
Mafia Kings: Valentino: Dark Mafia Romance Series #6 by Olivia Thorn
No matter how bad things got with my family, I always had Caterina to calm me down.
But then things got a shit-ton worse.
One afternoon, I was about to go find Caterina and drag her away for a quickie when Niccolo intercepted me in the hallway.
âCome into the parlor,â he said grimly. âWe need to have a serious discussion.â
Shit.
I figured heâd finally gotten around to chewing me out for that crack I made about the bomb in the panic room.
As I followed him into the room, I protested, âLook, I didnât mean to...â
I trailed off when I saw Dario sitting behind his desk in the corner.
He only did that when something big was about to go down.
âMean to what?â Niccolo asked as he shut the door behind us.
âWhatâs going on?â I asked.
âSit,â Dario said in his mafia don voice.
Like, Do what I say or there will be consequences.
I sat down nervously in one of the chairs.
Niccolo sat on the sofa and stared at me grimly.
âWhy is everybody being so serious?â I asked.
âWe sent Massimo to Venice to court the Widow as an ally,â Niccolo answered. âThatâs why heâs protecting Signora Fiorettiâs granddaughter â so that if we get the chance to argue our case before the Council, weâll have the Widow on our side.â
The Council was a meeting of the most powerful Cosa Nostra families in Italy. It didnât happen very often; in fact, it had only happened a few times since I was a kid, back when Papa was still alive.
The night of Adrianoâs wedding, when we found out Fausto had betrayed us, Dario had suggested calling a meeting of the Council.
At the time, Niccolo had said we needed more proof.
Maybe we had enough proof now...
But I still didnât understand why that would stress Nic and Dario out so much.
âWhy do we need the Widow on our side?â I asked.
âWhen the Council hears a case, every family gets a single vote. However, five of them âRome, Venice, Sicily, Naples, and Milan, the five most powerful families â get two votes apiece. If they vote together â which they often do â then they can overrule the rest of the Council. So itâs crucial that we peel off as many votes as possible from the Five Families.â
That was interesting. Iâd never known that before.
âSince weâre the ones bringing the case, we donât get a vote,â Niccolo continued. âAnd as the accused party, Fausto and Aurelio wonât get a vote, either. Which means we need as many people on our side as possible.
âWe can count on the Oldanis from Genoa since Alessandra is their granddaughter.â
That had been a big surprise â finding out that Alessandra was actually a secret mafia princess. Her father had been a servant for the Oldanis; after they fell in love and Alessandraâs mother got pregnant, they ran away to start a new life. Alessandra had grown up not knowing anything about her grandparents.
âBut some of the families can be bribed,â Niccolo continued. âIâm absolutely certain that Fausto paid them off, so we need as many of the Five Families to back us as possible. Hence sending Massimo to Venice.â
âOkay â but why are you guys acting so grim?â
Niccolo sighed. âWeâve made overtures to Don Vicari of Sicily. Do you remember him?â
Hell yeah, I remembered him. Scary motherfucker with a big, bushy black mustache. Iâd seen him at several weddings when I was a kid. What I remembered most about him â other than the mustache â was how all the other mafia dons gave him a wide berth. When Don Vicariâs name got mentioned, Papa would mutter under his breath and cross himself.
Sicily was the birthplace of the Cosa Nostra, and Don Vicari was old-school mafia. Coldblooded as fuck. No mercy, no quarter.
âI remember,â I said. âWhat about him?â
âHeâs agreed to throw his support behind us... for a price.â
I laughed and scoffed at the same time. Made sense heâd try to extort us. âHow much does he want?â
Niccolo looked pained. âHe doesnât want money.â
âThen what? Part of our territory?â
âNo.â Niccolo paused. âHe wants a husband for his youngest daughter.â
I frowned. âBut what does that have to do with...â
I trailed off as soon as I realized exactly what Niccolo meant.
âME?!â I shouted in disbelief.
Niccolo didnât say anything. Neither did Dario â
But their silence was all the confirmation I needed.
âWhat the FUCK!â I roared. âWhy ME?!â
âDarioâs married. So is Adriano. Massimo is...â Niccolo paused. â...out of contact at the moment.â
âWhat about Roberto?!â
âHeâs on official family business in Hong Kong.â
âSo?!â
âSo Don Vicari has requested an immediate audience.â
âMake him wait until Roberto gets back!â
âOne does not tell Don Vicari to wait,â Niccolo said darkly. âBesides, Roberto handles all the money for the family. We canât afford to lose him.â
âWell â YOU do it, then!â
âIâm the familyâs consigliere. Iâm not moving to Sicily.â
âThen make her move here!â
âThat was another one of Don Vicariâs conditions: that her husband stay in Sicily with the family.â
At that, I jumped up from my seat. âNO!â
âValentino â â Niccolo warned.
âFUCK THAT! I have a life here! I have shit going on! Iâm not just going to â â
âValentino,â Dario growled from the corner.
A shiver went down my spine.
It was like hearing a wolf snarl ten feet away from you when you hadnât even known it was there.
It was the only thing heâd said since heâd told me to sit. Iâd almost forgotten he was even in the room.
I immediately got quieter and more respectful, but I kept on talking.
I knew who I had to convince... and it wasnât Niccolo.
âDarâ â I started, then immediately caught myself when he narrowed his eyes. âDon Rosolini... please... Iâm begging you. Please donât make me do this. Please.â
Dario glared at me, then looked at Niccolo.
Sort of like, YOU handle this.
My stomach dropped as I realized maybe it was Niccolo I had to convince...
Which meant it was a lost cause.
Once Nic decided he wanted something done his way, he never compromised. He was like a pit bull with a bone.
I had to try anyway, though.
âWhy Don Vicari?â I pleaded as I turned back to Niccolo. âWhy canât we cut a deal with the families in Rome â or Naples, or Milan?â
âBecause none of them will talk to me,â Niccolo said coldly. âI tried calling all of them dozens of times. Don Vicari was the only one who responded.â
âTry again!â
âWhatâs the fucking problem here? Weâre not asking you to cut off your left nut â weâre asking you to go live in a palace in Sicily!â
âWhat if I donât want to go live in a palace in Sicily?â I said angrily.
ââWhat if I donât want to go live in a palace in Sicily?ââ Niccolo mimicked me, making me sound like a whiny little bitch. âEveryone else has been called on to sacrifice for the family. Now itâs your turn, so man the fuck up.â
âWhoâs fucking sacrificed for the family?â I shot back â and immediately regretted it.
Niccolo looked livid. âWell, for ONE, Dario took the fall for all of us and went to prison!â
I winced. âYeah, okay â â
âHe spent four years in that shithole San Vittore while Camorra assassins tried to slit his throat!â
San Vittore was the worst prison in all of Italy.
The Camorra was another organized crime group in Italy â and the sworn enemies of the Cosa Nostra.
âI know, I know,â I said regretfully, knowing Iâd fucked up.
But Niccolo was just getting started.
âAdriano nearly got killed by Mezzasalma in Florence! Massimo is currently putting his life on the line so we can get the Widow on our side! Lars, whoâs not even our flesh and blood, could be dead for all we know!â
âAnd Robertoâs having to sign a bunch of contracts in Hong Kong,â I said sarcastically.
âDonât fucking start about Roberto,â Niccolo snarled. âWhen youâve carried the entire familyâs finances on your shoulders, then you can say something.â
âWhat about you?â I challenged him. âWhat the fuck have you sacrificed?â
Niccolo stood up from the sofa, his face a mask of fury.
I had to admit, he looked intimidating as fuck.
âIâM the one who keeps the familyâs continued existence forefront in my mind, day and night! After Dario, Iâm the one who bears responsibility for whether we live or die while youâre off fucking the help!â
âDonât talk about her that way!â I yelled at him.
Niccolo looked shocked â
And then he burst out laughing.
Which just made me angrier.
âIs that what this is all about?!â he asked incredulously. âYou donât want to stop banging that kitchen girl?!â
âSHUT THE FUCK UP!â I roared.
I was so enraged, I cocked back my arm to punch him in the face.
I saw a flash of surprise in Niccoloâs eyes â
But before I could do anything, Dario roared, âVALENTINO!â
I froze and looked over at him.
Dario was standing behind his desk.
He looked angrier than Iâd ever seen him before.
I dropped my arm.
Nic asked in an ice-cold voice, âWere you about to hit your consigliere, Valentino?â
âNo,â I snarled, âI was about to hit my brother, whoâs being a fucking asshole.â
âBecause he said something about the servant girl youâre sleeping with,â Niccolo said sarcastically.
I glared at him. âHer name is Caterina.â
Niccolo burst out laughing again. âOh â excuse me! âCaterina.â I didnât realize you two were about to get married.â
âWeâre â no â â
âAre you two serious, or not?â Nic demanded.
I felt like I was standing naked on a stage with a spotlight on me.
âWell... no, but â â
Niccolo immediately became angry again. âWell, if youâre not serious, then what the fuck does it MATTER if you marry Don Vicariâs daughter?!â
I squinted as I tried to remember. âHave I ever even met her? She never came to any of the weddings, did she?â
âNo,â Niccolo conceded. âDon Vicari was very protective of her. Apparently, sheâs never left Sicily.â
âSo you want me to marry some girl Iâve never even seen before?! How do I know if I could even fall in love with her?!â
Niccolo reacted like I was insane. âDo you even know what an arranged marriage is? Itâs not about love â itâs an alliance between two families! Thatâs it.â
âYeah, but Iâm the one who has to stay married to her forever!â
Niccolo sighed in exasperation. âJesus, are you that naïve? You fuck her, she pops out some kids, Don Vicariâs happy, and we get a long-term ally. In the meantime, you can bang all the kitchen girls in Sicily you want on the side. Itâs a win-win.â
âDario didnât have an arranged marriage!â I shouted. âHe married for love! So did Adriano! So did Papa and Mama â â
âWhatâs your fucking point?â Niccolo snarled.
âMy point is, when I get married, I want to get married for love!â
Niccolo laughed. âOhhhhh â now youâre Mr. Romantic. And I suppose youâll be completely faithful to this hypothetical wife?â
âYes!â
âYou have to be fucking kidding me,â he sneered. âYouâll fuck anything that walks by in a skirt â â
âNOT SINCE IâVE BEEN WITH CATERINA!â
My outburst took even me by surprise.
It was the first time Iâd admitted it to anyone in my family.
Once again, Niccolo looked at me in total shock. âYou really are serious about this girl, arenât you?â
âI...â
I trailed off.
It felt like it was too much to say that Caterina and I were serious.
As much as I liked her â as much as I wanted her â I couldnât bring myself to go that far.
âValentino,â Dario said quietly.
Both Niccolo and I looked over at him.
He walked out from behind the desk and stood in front of me. His eyes seemed to bore straight into my soul. âCaterina is Alessandraâs best friend. She was the maid of honor at our wedding.â
âYes,â I agreed, not knowing where this was going.
âI donât relish the prospect of breaking the heart of my wifeâs best friend,â Dario said grimly. âSo if you agree to marry Caterina today... Iâll call off the deal with Don Vicari.â
I stared at Dario in shock.
MARRY her?
âDario!â Niccolo hissed, but immediately fell silent when Dario raised one hand.
He didnât even look at Niccolo; the entire time, Dario kept his eyes focused on mine.
âYou mean... I just have to agree to marry Cat?â I asked in shock.
âNo. I mean, you marry her today. Iâll call in a priest from Florence to officiate. We can get the forms taken care of through a judge on our payroll. Weâll have the marriage here in the house this afternoon. Just us â just the family.
âNot only that, but you swear to me youâll be faithful to her your entire life. No other women, no affairs. Iâm not risking our familyâs future on a sham marriage you agree to just so you can sleep with dozens of other women.
âYou agree to all that â the marriage and lifelong faithfulness â and Iâll call off the deal with Don Vicari.
âSo... what will it be?â he finished.
âI...â
I couldnât make my mouth work.
It just...
Moving this fast...
It was insane!
âWell?â Dario asked.
I looked helplessly between him and Niccolo.
âYour don asked you a question,â Niccolo snapped.
âI... I just... Iâm not ready to settle down yet,â I said miserably.
It was the truth.
Caterina was great â
She was amazing â
But I was only 22 years old.
I hadnât thought Iâd get married until I was at least as old as Dario.
I had my entire life to live...
And I didnât want to trade away all my freedom.
As soon as I said it, Darioâs shoulders dropped the tiniest bit.
Like he was either relieved...
Or disappointed.
But he didnât say anything.
Niccolo was a lot more vocal.
âFUCK you!â he snarled at me. âThis isnât about Caterina â this was never about her! This is about you being an immature asshole and not being willing to do your part for the family!â
I was once again considering punching Nic when Dario snapped, âConsigliere â youâre not helping.â
Niccolo immediately went silent.
Dario turned to me. âIn an effort to make you see our point of view, Iâm going to tell you everything â but you are not to repeat it to anyone else. Not even to Adriano, and certainly not to Alessandra or Bianca. Do you understand?â
â...yes,â I said, suddenly very nervous.
âYou already know that Massimo and Lars are out of contact. We obviously hope itâs not the case, but we have to face the possibility that theyâre both dead.
âWhat you donât know is that Fausto extorted and blackmailed various bank officials. The morning the assassin shot at me, those bank officials helped Fausto transfer 28 million euros out of our accounts. He essentially destroyed our finances in one fell swoop.â
I stared at Dario in shock. âWeâre broke?â
âWe have enough money to last another month, if that. Roberto is in Hong Kong trying to get back the 50 million euros we invested with the gambling syndicate so weâll have the resources to keep fighting. If Roberto doesnât succeed, then Don Vicariâs support might be our only chance at survival.â
What Dario was saying was horrifying...
That we were crippled and on the verge of death...
And yet, I still couldnât bring myself to agree to what he wanted.
âI wouldnât ask you to do this if the situation werenât dire,â Dario said.
âThen donât ask me,â I pleaded.
He sighed sternly. âIf you wonât honor my request, then you will follow my command. You will marry Don Vicariâs daughter. Am I understood?â
There was nothing more I could do or say.
My don had spoken.
â...yes, Don Rosolini,â I whispered.
Dario patted me on the shoulder consolingly, then walked towards the door. âSay your goodbyes, but make it quick.â
âWhat?â I asked in shock.
âWeâre flying out in half an hour,â Niccolo said sourly.
I stared at him in shock. âHalf an hour?â
âWhat, is that not enough time for one last fuck for the road?â he sneered.
I was going to break his jaw, I swore to GOD â
âNiccolo,â Dario said sharply as he opened the door.
Niccolo sighed resentfully. âAlright... you can take a little bit longer than half an hour.â
Dario nodded, then left the room.
âAnd whatâs this âweâre flying outâ part?â I asked in alarm.
âYou and I are going to Sicily,â Niccolo said.
GREAT.
âI thought we couldnât fly anywhere,â I said, trying to weasel my way out of it.
âRoberto and I flew to Hong Kong.â
âYeah, and Lars said you were taking an insane risk!â
âDon Vicari sent his own plane.â
âItâs already here?!â I asked in astonishment.
âYes. And he has personally guaranteed our safety.â
âAnd you believe him?!â
Niccolo smirked. âHereâs the first lesson for your new life: when a Sicilian swears to you on his motherâs life, do not question his integrity. It will not go well for you.â
The idea of going to live in Sicily â
Of getting married to some girl Iâd never seen before â
Of leaving Caterina â
It made me physically sick.
âGo say your goodbyes,â Niccolo ordered.
âWhat the fuck am I supposed to tell her?â I asked, panicked.
âI donât know â tell her it was fun. Tell her itâs not your fault. Tell her you have to fulfill your duty to your family. I donât care what you tell her â just GO!â he snapped as he pushed me roughly towards the door. âAnd make it fast!â
I shuffled out of the room like a zombie.
It was like my feet were encased in lead...
And my heart felt even heavier.
It only got worse from there.
