Chapter 29
Mafia Kings: Valentino: Dark Mafia Romance Series #6 by Olivia Thorn
Mafia Kings: Valentino: Chapter 29 I was crying in bed when I heard a light knock on the door.
âGo away,â I sniffled.
âCaterina, itâs me,â Alessandraâs muffled voice said. âPlease let me in.â
I still loved Alessandra just as much as the first day she walked into my kitchen...
But the fact that she was now my bossâs wife kind of complicated our friendship.
I thought about telling her again to go away...
But I gave in, dragged myself out of bed, and unlocked the door.
Then I collapsed back onto my bed and buried my face in my pillow.
Alessandra closed the door, sat at the foot of the bed, and put a consoling hand on my leg.
â...you listened in, didnât you,â she asked sadly.
I didnât look at her. I couldnât. I was too humiliated by what Don Rosolini had said.
âHow much did you hear?â Alessandra asked.
âEnough,â I said miserably.
âCaterina, listen to me: you have to go to Sicily.â
Of all the things Iâd been expecting her to say, that had not been one of them.
I looked up from the pillow in shock. âWhat?!â
âYou have to go to Sicily.â
âWhy?!â
âTo get him back!â
I looked at her like she was crazy. âYour husband gave Valentino a choice between me and an arranged marriage... and he chose the arranged marriage.â
âDario didnât want to marry me at first,â Alessandra said. âHe didnât change his mind until he almost lost me.â
âThat was different,â I protested.
âHow was it so different? Two brothers â one sleeping with a café waitress, the other with a kitchen worker â â
âYouâre a freakinâ long-lost mafia princess,â I grumbled.
âWe didnât find that out until after Dario kicked me out of the house.â
I squinted. âDidnât you ask him to leave?â
âYouâre missing the point,â Alessandra said impatiently. âDario wasnât going to marry me until he almost lost me for good. Thatâs what changed his mind. If I know Valentino, heâs probably cursing himself right now for not taking the deal. By the way, it was all Niccoloâs idea â did you know that?â
âYeah... thatâs what Valentino said, more or less.â
âWell, if I know Niccolo, he laid it on pretty thick. He probably told Valentino how this was all about the FAMILY,â she said in a pompous voice, âand how it was necessary for everyoneâs survival and blah blah blah.â
I chuckled in spite of myself. It wasnât the best imitation of Niccolo ever, but Alessandra had captured his self-importance pretty well.
âAnd Iâll bet you a million dollars that Niccolo brought up Dario spending four years in prison â for the FAMILY,â Alessandra said darkly. âNiccoloâs a master manipulator. Iâm sure he guilted Valentino into thinking he had to do it.â
âBut your husband gave him a choice, and he said he didnât want to marry me!â
Alessandra smiled like she knew something I didnât. âIâm guessing you didnât stick around long enough to hear when Dario said the two of you had to get married.â
I frowned. âNo â when?â
âToday.â
I stared at her. âWHAT?!â
âExactly!â Alessandra crowed. âIf I asked you, âCaterina, do you want to marry Valentino NOW â RIGHT NOW, in the next 15 minutesâ â would you do it?â
âI...â
âWell?!â Alessandra tapped her elegant gold wristwatch for comic effect. âTell me now! Timeâs running out! YOU HAVE TO TELL ME NOW!â
I realized she was trying to drive home how much pressure Valentino must have been under...
But even without the theatrics, I recognized how insane the choice was.
If sheâd asked me three hours ago in the kitchen â back before I knew anything about the arranged marriage â I would have laughed in her face.
Girl, are you crazy?! Weâre just having a good time!
Now that Valentino had broken my heart, the question about marrying him was even more complicated.
I wasnât sure I wanted to entrust my heart to him a second time.
And if I had been the one Don Rosolini had asked...
If my decision could have called off the arranged marriage...
I still wasnât sure.
I mean... it was a lot.
âThatâs a big step,â I said lamely.
âItâs a HUGE step! Now imagine having to take that step with two brothers pressuring you to do your duty to the family, and one of them went to prison so you didnât have to!â
She didnât mention the part I knew we were both thinking:
Two brothers in the mafia.
But... still...
âWhat if he really doesnât want to marry me?â I asked miserably.
âThereâs only one way to find out. Go fight for him.â
My stomach clenched in fear. âI canât do that!â
âDo you want him?â
I paused â
Then realized that no matter how much he had hurt me...
Hell YES I want him.
âYes,â I said.
âHow much?â
It was scary to say it â but I said it anyway. âMore than anything.â
âThen go and claim him. Fight for him.â
âHeâs in an arranged marriage â by the mafia!â I said, whispering the last word frantically.
Alessandra made a humorous face. âI didnât say it would be easy.â
âYouâre going against your husband by even suggesting this!â This time, I whispered the entire sentence.
Alessandra got a dangerous look in her eye. âDario should have never agreed to this in the first place.â
Blessed Virgin...
I was glad Don Rosolini wasnât around to hear her talk like that...
âIâve never even been to Sicily!â I protested.
âI hadnât even been out of Tuscany when Dario brought me here,â Alessandra said.
âEven if I could go to Sicily, Iâm not rich! I have to work this job to survive â because I donât have any money!â
Alessandra gave me a mischievous grin. âThatâs not going to be a problem.â
She bent over and got her purse off the floor, which I didnât know she had with her. My head had been buried in my pillow when she walked in.
She undid the clasp, pulled out a huge roll of cash with a rubber band around it â
And held it out to me.
I stared at her in shock. âI canât take your money!â
âOf course you can!â she said as she pressed it into my hand. âDario took away your happiness. The very least I can do is try to help you get it back.â
I stared at her for another few seconds in shock â
Then burst into tears.
âThank you,â I sobbed as I hugged her.
She laughed as she hugged me back.
Oh shit...
Iâm going to Sicily!
But then I realized something.
Sicily was a very big island... the same size as a lot of smaller countries.
And I had no idea where to go.
âWhere is Valentino, exactly?â I asked.
Alessandra stared at me in shock. âUm... thatâs a good question.â
âYou donât know?â
âNo... but I know how to find out.â
Panic slammed into me all at once. âYou canât ask Don Rosolini, or Niccolo, or any of them â theyâll know somethingâs up!â
âDonât worry,â Alessandra said slyly as she pulled out a cellphone, âI wasnât going to.â
She went into her contacts on her phone, then tapped the screen and held it up to her ear.
After a second, someone answered.
âHello, Nonna!â Alessandra said happily. âYes â Iâve been meaning to call you, too! But I have a favor to ask you, and no one â
not even my husband â can know about it.â
I froze in fear.
Alessandra was talking to her grandmother, who she hadnât even known about until a few months ago.
Signora Oldani...
A member of the Oldani family...
Who belonged to the Cosa Nostra.
Alessandra was calling in a favor from the mafia on my behalf...
And not only that, she was keeping Don Rosolini in the dark about it.
I waved my hands and tried to tell her No!
Alessandra said, âHold on one second, Nonna,â and muted the phone.
âYou canât do this!â I whispered frantically.
âDo you want Valentino back?â
â...yes...â
âThen this is how we do it.â
âCouldnât you just call him?â I asked. âValentino, I mean?â
âThe first thing Dario did when he brought me here was take away my phone,â Alessandra said. âEven if the Sicilian mafia don is letting Valentino keep his, Iâll bet you theyâll be monitoring his calls and listening in somehow. No... this is the only way.â
As she went back to the phone call, I sat there trembling on the bed.
This is a bad, BAD idea...
