Chapter 38
Mafia Kings: Valentino: Dark Mafia Romance Series #6 by Olivia Thorn
Mafia Kings: Valentino: Chapter 38 The next morning, Niccolo still hadnât returned from Sicily. I knew better than to ask questions.
At 8:30, Alessandra knocked on my door. When I answered, she was grinning like a loon, her cell phone at her ear. âItâs him!â
I gasped because I thought she meant Valentino â
But then I realized she was talking about the person her grandmother knew. Her contact inside the Sicilian gangsterâs operation.
âHold on,â Alessandra said into the phone, âIâm putting you on speaker.â
When she did, I heard street sounds: voices calling in the distance, a car driving past.
âI canât talk long,â the voice said impatiently.
It was a man, probably in his early 20s.
âThis is Caterina, the person weâre doing this for,â Alessandra said. She motioned for me to speak.
â...hello,â I said hesitantly.
âHello,â the voice said curtly. âWhat do you want to know?â
âWe need to know if you can arrange a meeting with Valentino,â Alessandra replied.
âYes.â
âHow can you be sure?â Alessandra asked.
âBecause Iâm lookinâ at him right now.â
My heart leapt in my chest.
âValentinoâs there with you?!â I cried out.
âNo, heâs across the street with some other people.â
âCan I talk to him?!â
âNO,â the man snapped.
I looked at Alessandra in a panic. She waved me off reassuringly.
âAre you sure you can arrange a meeting in the future?â she asked.
âYES. How many times do I have to say it?â
âHOW?â Alessandra snapped right back at him.
âI canât go into specifics. Youâll just have to trust me.â
âYou donât want us to be able to identify you to the Vicaris,â Alessandra said drily.
âDing ding ding,â he said sarcastically. âGive the lady a prize.â
Alessandra made a face. It was obvious she thought he was an asshole.
I did, too â
But if he could get me to Valentino...
âTell us what Caterina needs to do.â
âShe needs to get to Sicily as soon as possible. I donât know how LONG I can guarantee a meeting.â
âHow about tonight?â
I looked at Alessandra in shock. She ignored me.
âPerfect.â
âShould she fly into Palermo?â
âNo. Fly into Catania â thatâll be closer to where Valentino will be.â
âWhat should she do when she gets there?â
âTake a taxi to a hotel. Keep your phone on and charged so I can reach you, day or night.â
âAlright, Iâll give her your number. Sheâll text you when she knows her arrival time.â
âFine. Look, Iâm taking a big risk here. I could get whacked for this, so Iâm expecting something big enough to make it worth my while.â
âHold on,â Alessandra said. She switched the phone off speakerphone and told me, âIâll be right back.â
âAlessandra â â
âIâll be right back,â she promised, then went out into the hall and closed the door behind her.
I sat there on my bed, feeling guilty that she was doing so much for me...
And that it sounded like it was going to cost her even more than what sheâd already given me.
But none of that was helping me calm down, so I pulled out my phone, opened Google Maps, and typed in âCatania.â
It was a small city on the eastern coast of Sicily â
Farther away from Florence than Iâd ever been in my life.
My heart started beating rapidly in my chest.
Thatâs when the door opened and Alessandra walked in.
She was no longer on the phone, and she looked positively giddy.
âItâs all set!â she said.
âHow much did he want?â I asked worriedly.
âDonât worry about it.â
âAlessandra â â
âI said donât worry about it.â She sat down on the bed next to me and took my hands in hers. âI can afford it, and Iâm happy to help.â
âAlessandra â â
âYou were my only friend when I came here. You were the first person in this house who showed me real kindness. The others â
Massimo, Lars, Roberto â were nice to me because they felt sorry for me, but they still followed Darioâs orders and kept me under lock and key. They became important to me, eventually â but you were my friend when there was nothing in it for you, just because youâre good and kind. Please â let me repay the favor. Please.â
My eyes welled up, and I hugged her. âThank you.â
âYouâre welcome. Just make me one promise.â
âWhat?â
âDo whatever you have to do to get Valentino back.â
âWhat if he really doesnât want me?â I moaned.
She laughed. âI know him well enough to know better.â
âBut what if?â
âThen weâll cross that bridge when we come to it. I know this is scary, but this is your one chance to get him back â and you deserve a shot at happiness. Now â go to Sicily and claim your man.â
I nodded, tears in my eyes, and hugged her again.
