Chapter 84
Mafia Kings: Valentino: Dark Mafia Romance Series #6 by Olivia Thorn
Mafia Kings: Valentino: Chapter 84 âWHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED?!â Don Vicari roared.
It was past midnight, and we were all in the Donâs study.
Isabella sat on a chair, her face pale but cleaned up. There were a couple of stitches in a cut near her hairline.
Ludavica sat next to her, unharmed but terrified.
I was wrapped in a blanket â less to keep me warm than to make sure I didnât get the furniture wet â as an old Sicilian country doctor cleaned the scrapes and cuts on my face with iodine. I hadnât even been allowed to change my clothes before the questioning started.
âI told you, Papa,â Isabella said in a timid voice. âPaolo slammed my head against the wall. Valentino chased after him, and... I...
I donât remember much else.â
Don Vicari looked furiously at Ludavica. âWhat happened?!â
She pointed at me with a trembling finger. âPaolo knocked him over the railing into the water.â
Vicari glared at me. âWell?â
âI ran after him, but he pulled his gun, which is why I hesitated. Then... I donât remember much else.â
I knew my injuries would sell the story for me. The right side of my face was bruised and cut, and the doctor said Iâd suffered a mild concussion. Not to mention Iâd nearly drowned.
Don Vicari stood there fuming in silence â
Then shouted âOUT!â at the doctor.
The old man got out of there real fast.
Don Vicari leaned down in front of me, his eyes blazing. âWhy the hell would Paolo do all this?â
âI donât know.â
âWhat do you know?â
âEarlier in the afternoon, he left the restaurant to go make a phone call,â I said. âWhen he didnât come back, I went to go find him, but I couldnât.â
âYou LEFT my daughter by HERSELF?!â Vicari roared.
âShe was in a restaurant full of people. She was safe. Besides, I thought Iâd find him and be back in five minutes.â
âYou shouldâve called ME!â
âI donât have a phone, remember?â I snapped. âBesides, I didnât think he was a fucking traitor â I just thought he was slacking off on his job.â
Vicari looked like he wanted to break my face â
But he got control of himself. âHe disappeared from the restaurant, but you caught up with him at some point. How?â
âHeâd been gone several hours by the time it got dark. At that point, I didnât think I should leave the girls alone â so I took them with me, and we all went looking for him.â
A lot of the details in my story wouldnât hold up if Vicariâs men questioned the restaurant staff. For instance, that Iâd taken the girls with me.
However, Iâd been in the restaurant when Iâd told them Iâd killed Paolo. I was hoping that in the hustle and bustle, the restaurant workers would be fuzzy on the details.
If not, I was fucked.
âAnd you found him,â Vicari snarled at his daughter.
âYes,â Isabella said.
Vicari looked angrily at me. âWhy werenât you together?â
âWe were just a block apart,â I replied. âOne street over from each other. I figured we could cover more ground if we spread out.â
Vicari turned back to Isabella. âAnd what was Paolo doing?â
âHe was on the phone. He was acting... strange.â
âStrange how?â
âLike he was nervous.â
âDid you hear what he said?â
âNot really... but I heard him mention Eliseo.â
Of course, it was all a lie.
When we were discussing the plan â when it went from just hiding the body to Isabella and Ludavica playing an important part â
Iâd told Isabella to mention the consigliereâs name.
Why? sheâd asked.
Just trust me.
Turns out I was right.
Don Vicariâs reaction was powerful and instant.
He stepped back, a look of shock on his face like heâd been slapped â
Then he leaned over and screamed at Isabella, âWHAT DID HE SAY?!â
Isabella flinched and started crying. âI donât know! I just heard him say Eliseoâs name!â
I had to hand it to Isabella.
When sheâd told me, I can lie to my father easier than you think, Iâd thought she was being overly confident.
But â hell â even I was buying her performance.
Vicari stood up, his face a mask of rage, and paced back and forth like an angry tiger.
Finally he turned to Isabella and Ludavica. âThe two of you â go to bed! NOW!â
They both scrambled for the door.
Once they were gone, Vicari turned to me.
âLetâs go,â he snarled.
âWhere are we going?â I asked warily.
He smiled evilly. âI think you know.â
I did.
The barn.
âCan I change into dry clothes first?â I asked as I stood.
âNo,â he said as he pushed me out the door.
