Chapter 86
Mafia Kings: Valentino: Dark Mafia Romance Series #6 by Olivia Thorn
Mafia Kings: Valentino: Chapter 86 â...and Massimo just got out of surgery,â Niccolo said. âThe doctors said it was touch and go, but they think heâll pull through.â
I sat there in Don Vicariâs kitchen, my cell on speakerphone on the table.
â...pull through?â I repeated, my voice shaking.
Massimo was the biggest of us all â
The strongest.
He wasnât supposed to âpull throughâ â
He was supposed to be fucking invincible.
âHe was shot 17 times. Only three got through his body armor, but the ones that did were pretty bad.â
âBut heâs going to be alright â isnât he?â I whispered.
Niccolo paused... then said softly, âI wonât lie to you, Val. I THINK so... but he has to make it through the night first.â
He has to make it through the night first.
I didnât think Iâd ever heard Niccolo say something more frightening.
âBut Adrianoâs okay?â
âHeâs fine. He reinjured his ribs, but heâs alright.â
âAnd Lars?â
âHeâs fine, too. In fact, if it hadnât been for him, theyâd have ALL been killed.â
âWhat about the rest of our guys?â
Niccolo sounded pained. âMost of them died. Fourteen out of twenty. The rest were wounded â some pretty seriously.â
âBut Aurelioâs dead?â
âYes,â Niccolo said grimly. âMassimo threw him off the bell tower.â
âJesus Christ...â
My mind raced as I tried to process everything Iâd heard.
That morning, while I was in Ortigia, Massimo had led an assault on the Isle of San Michele â a cemetery island just off the coast of Venice. Heâd been trying to rescue the Widowâs granddaughter, who had been kidnapped by Aurelio and some mercenaries.
Massimo, Adriano, Lars, and 20 of our guys had gone in.
Only a handful had walked out...
And now Massimo might not make it, either.
âIâm coming to Venice,â I said.
âNo youâre not,â Don Vicari said.
He was sitting across the table, listening in on the call.
âThe fuck Iâm not,â I snarled at him.
He just narrowed his eyes. âYouâre not leaving this house until after the wedding.â
âLOOK â â
âValentino,â Niccolo interrupted, âlisten to me. Thereâs nothing you can do here. Iâll call you every hour if you want, I swear â but we NEED Don Vicariâs help right now. Fausto is still out there, and Iâm sure heâs lost his mind over what happened to Aurelio.
Heâs not going to fight with the gloves on anymore, and itâs going to get ugly. We need Don Vicariâs forces more than ever. Do you understand?â
âBut â â
âWeâll see you at the wedding â Massimo, too. It will all be fine, I promise. But until then, do whatever Don Vicari tells you to. Do I make myself clear?â
I glared at Vicari hatefully, but I mumbled, â...yes.â
âGood.â Niccolo paused. âI understand there was some sort of... trouble earlier?â
âItâs fine,â I muttered.
âThen why wasnât I able to reach you?â
âIâll tell you at the wedding,â I said acidly.
Nic knew I was telling him to fuck off; given the situation, though, he couldnât do anything but take it.
â...fine. Weâll talk then. Don Vicari, thank you for protecting my brother.â
âHmph,â Vicari grunted. âHe has a habit of putting himself in harmâs way.â
âItâs an inherited trait in our family. But both my brother Dario and I greatly appreciate your help with â â
âIs Alessandra there?â I interrupted.
âI was speaking with Don Vicari,â Niccolo said coldly.
âYeah, I heard,â I snapped. âIs Alessandra there?â
âYes, but â â
âPut her on.â
âI donât â â
âPUT HER ON, NIC.â
Niccolo was silent for a moment â seething in rage, no doubt.
But then he said, âHold on, I have to go get her.â
There was silence.
âThatâs Don Rosoliniâs wife, yes?â Vicari asked me.
âYeah. My sister-in-law.â
Vicari narrowed his eyes. âWhy do you want to speak with her?â
Why, indeed.
I couldnât exactly tell him that I wanted to know about Cat â
So I said, âNiccolo has a habit of putting the best spin on news. Sheâll tell me the truth.â
âI see,â Vicari said.
He didnât sound convinced.
After another 60 seconds of sitting there in silence, Alessandra suddenly came on the phone. âValentino?!â
âHey, Alessandra,â I said, then added as a warning, âIâm sitting here with my future father-in-law.â
âOh... hello,â Alessandra replied.
âMrm,â Vicari grunted.
âTell me the truth: is everyone okay?â I asked.
âWell â I mean, Iâm sure Massimo will be okay â the doctors said â â
âBut everybody else â everybody we love â theyâre okay? Youâve talked to Adriano and Lars and everybody else?â
There was a short silence.
I didnât know if she was confused â
Or if she was just shocked to hear me use the word âloveâ in connection with Cat.
âYes,â she finally said. âI promise you, everybody you and I love is alright.â
I exhaled.
Catâs safe.
â...thank you,â I murmured.
âDo you want me to pass on a message?â
âYeah. Tell them I canât wait until I see them again. And that I love them.â
Another pause.
Then she said, âOkay. I will.â
âThanks, Alessandra.â
âDo you want to speak to Niccolo again?â
âNo,â I said decisively.
âAlright... well... goodnight.â
âGoodnight.â
I hung up the call.
âCan I keep this?â I asked, already knowing the answer.
âNo,â Vicari said.
âThen Iâm going to go take a shower,â I announced.
I got up and limped towards the door â
When Vicari said out of nowhere, âAll that talk about âlove.ââ
I turned and looked at him.
My heart was beating faster; I was afraid heâd figured it out.
âWhat about it?â I asked.
He looked at me for a long moment in silence...
Then said contemptuously, âThat shit is what makes you weak.â
If I could have killed him right then and there, I would have.
Instead, I just gave him a Fuck you smile. âMaybe so. But I donât care if it does.â
And I turned away and walked out of the kitchen.
After my shower, it took me hours to fall asleep. I couldnât stop worrying.
About Massimo...
About Caterina...
And that I might never see her again.
At least she was safe.
That was more than I could say for my brother.
