Chapter 90
Mafia Kings: Valentino: Dark Mafia Romance Series #6 by Olivia Thorn
Mafia Kings: Valentino: Chapter 90 My cell sat on the desk between us. I put it on speakerphone and hit the Contact for Alessandra.
She answered after just a few rings.
âHello?â
âHey, Alessandra.â
âValentino! How are you?â
âNot bad. Iâm here with Don Vicari.â
âNot badâ was a code word we used when we called each other.
Lars had come up with a list of them.
Outstanding let you know that the speaker didnât have a gun to his head and that nobody was listening in who shouldnât be.
Not bad, though, meant Proceed with caution.
Iâd told her that Don Vicari was listening in, yes, but Iâd used the code word to emphasize extra caution.
I knew Alessandra was familiar with Larsâs code.
I just hoped she realized I was using it.
âGood,â she said. âHello, Don Vicari.â
âHello,â he said gruffly.
âHow are you?â I asked.
âOutstanding! Massimoâs out of bed and walking around all on his own!â
Outstanding!
So she did get it.
âThatâs awesome,â I said, and I meant it. I was happy to hear my big brother was okay â and that nobody was listening in on her side of the conversation. âWill he be able to come to the wedding?â
âIâll be honest... all of us think he should stay in Venice and rest, but he absolutely insists on being there. I donât think anything but a direct order from Dario would keep him away â and maybe not even that.â
I chuckled.
âTell him thank you.â And then I said something she knew was out of character for me: âI really want everybody I love to be there at the chapel.â
The last time Iâd used those words â everybody I love â was the night Iâd found out Massimo was shot.
I had specifically been talking about Cat.
In fact, âeverybodyâ might as well have been code for âCaterina.â
Alessandra had picked up on it then; I was hoping she would pick up on it now.
From her reply, I was pretty sure she got it.
âIâm sure everybody will try. Whatâs going on?â
âI wanted to know when everybody was coming.â
âLast I heard, weâre flying over to Sicily the morning of the wedding.â
âWould it be possible for everybody to come 24 hours ahead of time? Iâd really like to see everybody.â
âNo,â Don Vicari interjected.
Iâd planned for that.
âCome on,â I asked him, pretending to plead. âWhatâs 24 hours ahead of time?â
âNO,â Vicari snapped. âDonât ask again.â
I hadnât been trying to convince him.
Iâd been emphasizing â24 hours ahead of time.â
Alessandra got the hint.
âI think it would be possible, Valentino, but if your father-in-law doesnât want it â by the way, Don Vicari, what time IS the wedding on Saturday?â
He frowned like he couldnât quite decide if something was up or not. âNoon.â
âAnd it was at that little chapel near â what was the village? Retusanno?â
âResuttano.â
âRight, Resuttano.â
Alessandra was letting me know sheâd tell Cat to be at the chapel outside Resuttano at noon tomorrow â
Twenty-four hours before the wedding.
My heart leapt in my chest, but I managed to keep a poker face.
âBut youâll be flying into my private estate,â Don Vicari said dourly.
âOh â wonderful! I canât wait to see it!â
âHrm,â he harrumphed.
âDid Roberto get back okay?â I asked.
âHe did! He brought someone, too!â
âWho?â I asked, surprised.
âA woman from Hong Kong.â
âWhat?!â I said, shocked.
I wondered if she was the one with the 50 million euros.
âWho is she?â I asked.
âHer nameâs Mei-ling. Sheâs very nice, but Iâll let you ask him about her. You know heâs extremely private, and heâs been a bit cagey about her.â
Holy shit...
Had Roberto â a boring stick in the mud, if there ever was one â hooked up with some chick in Hong Kong?!
If it was true, then I was seriously pissed off.
Here I was, about to get forced into an arranged marriage, and Roberto was chasing pussy in Hong Kong.
But I let it slide. Iâd find out more later.
Alessandra and I chatted, and I asked a bunch of questions to camouflage my intentions about Cat.
At the end, I said, âThanks, Alessandra. For everything.â
âYouâre welcome. I canât promise Massimo will be there... but Iâm sure heâll want to be.â
I knew she wasnât talking about Massimo.
âI look forward to seeing everybody.â
âAnd I know everybody wants to see you. Take care. Goodbye, Don Vicari.â
âGoodbye,â he said coolly.
When Alessandra hung up the phone, Don Vicari looked at me. âWell? Satisfied?â
I would be if it worked.
