Chapter l113
The Luna Choosing Game
Chapter 0113
Yet would the public questioning be enough to deter the King? I had to think so. After all, public opinion was swaying much of what happened here.
As long as I continued to earn the publicâs favor, then I should be safe.
I hoped.
âI have an idea,â I said. âBut thereâs one thing I have to tell you first. About my private audience with the
King,â
Nicholas expression was carefully neutral, but Markâs worry was outright.
âTell us,â Nicholas said.
I closed my eyes, hesitating for a moment. I had kept this secret from Nicholas, wanting to protect him, but if I was going to take this risk, I would need strong allies. No one was a stronger ally than the oldest
prince and his Beta. 2
âThe King knows about our past,â I said.
When I was met with silence, I peeked open my eyes. Nicholasâs brow was pulled together.
âI never told him.â
âI know. He said that,â I said. âBut he⦠He had you followed, Nicholas. He likely had me followed too. He
knew things, and I
âDid he know about Elva?â
âI donât know. He didnât say if he did. But heâs terrifying. The very walls have ears for him. I wouldnât be
surprised if he knew everything.â
Nicholas crumpled the cards in his hand. âHe threatened you.â
I lowered my gaze.
âPiper?â
âYes. He said if I told anyone about you and me, he would⦠well, the threat was clear.â
He slammed his hand down on the table. âThat will not happen.â
The naise roused Elva. âMommy?â
Nicholas immediately cooled his anger. âSorry,â he whispered to me.
âIâm here, honey,â I called, rising from the table. I touched Nicholasâs shoulder as I passed, offering him quick forgiveness. Then I walked around the bed to help settle Elva again.
âIs Nickâlass here too?â she asked.
âHe is.â I brushed some of the hair back from her face. âHeâs keeping us safe. Mark, too.â
Elva nodded, easily accepting that.
âIs the garden party soon?â Someone must have told her already about the next challenge.
âA few days.â
âWill I get another pretty dress?â
âOf course.â
H
âWill I get lots of food?â
âUndoubtedly.
âWill I get to ride a wolf?â
I laughed lightly. âThat might be harder to provide.â
âIf the princess wants to ride a wolf at the garden party, then so be it.â Nicholas approached the other side of the bed. He smiled down at me and Elva. âIâve been thinking having more protection around
wouldnât be harmful, after all.â
I lifted a brow. âSurely the wolves wouldnât be allowed in the palace.â
âNot all of them,â Nicholas said. âMaybe only two.â
Mark stood as well. âI will begin the arrangements at once.â
I
âAsk them first,â I said. I could guess the two he wanted to employ were Night and Silver, but I hated to
bother them, pulling them out of the wild and into a stuffy castle, when they were meant to be free.
Nicholas nodded, and conveyed the request to Mark.
âOf course, sir. Piper.â Then Mark backed away, out of the room.
âDoes this mean I get to ride Night again?â Elva asked.
âWeâre asking him.â I said, before Nicholas could blindly agree. Iâd leamed quickly that he had trouble
Later, when it turned to evening, and Nicholas had to go, I walked him to the door.
âYou never told me your plan,â he said.
I gave him a soft smile. I felt better telling him now, knowing he knew of his fatherâs threats. He would protect Elva and me, of that I was certain.
If we played our cards right, the public would help, too.
Sol told him, âWe take charge of the narrative.â
