Chapter l256
The Luna Choosing Game
Chapter 0256
The next morning, Elva was still resting peacefully after I awoke and changed, so I left her in the care of
Charlotte, the Nanny, and Mark, and went down to breakfast alone.
I was nearly there, when both Veronica and Tiffany blocked my path.
âWe want to talk to you,â Veronica said.
We were about to have breakfast beside each other. âCould it wait until breakfast?â If they were going to
yell at me about âmyâ behavior last night, Iâd prefer it not to happen on my empty stomach.
âNo,â Veronica said.
Okay, then. I sighed in resignation and followed them to a quieter spot away from the doorway to the
dining room.
Tiffany crossed her arms. âWe talked to the otherâyou last night at the gala.â
âShe looked like you and spoke like you, but it was clear to us both that she was not you,â Veronica said.
âYeah, plus⦠why would you change clothes? Thatâs not like you at all. And then change back?â Tiffany
shook her head. âIt doesnât add up, Piper. So spill. Tell us whatâs really going on.â
My heart pounded. Of all people that didnât know the difference, why were these two so observant?
Even the King had been willing to believe the worst of me.
âIt was me⦠I was just having a bad night,â I said. I didnât want to lie, but I couldnât tell anyone the truth,
not even them. Too many people knew it already, from Nicholasâs guards to some of the servants. It was
a miracle the truth hadnât leaked yet.
That it hadnât was a compliment to the strong character of everyone on Nicholasâs payroll.
âThat was not a bad night,â Tiffany said.
âThat wasnât you,â Veronica added.
âDid
you
lose a bet or something?â Tiffany said. âSomeone extorting you?â
Veronica gave Tiffany sideways look. âIt wasnât her.â
Tiffany looked back. âWho else could it be?â
They both looked at me expectantly.
I closed my eyes. âI wish I could tell you, but I just canât.â If it were only me that could be hurt, I would
reputation.
Elva. The underground organization. This ran so much deeper than just me and Jane.
âItâs alright, Piper,â Julian said. Appearing beside me, he placed a gentle hand on my shoulder. âYou can
trust these two.â
I frowned at him. He was the one who was so adamant about not trusting anyone.
Julian grinned at my upset. âThereâs a reason I picked these two. Well, other than their great senses of
humor.â He laughed. âTheyâre trustworthy.â He shrugs. âAnd they hate the underground.â
âThe underground is behind this?â Tiffany asked, her voice taking on a sharp edge.
âI should have known,â Veronica said. At her sides, her hands clenched into fists. âThose bastards.â
Julian nudged me. âYou can tell them.â
So I did. Not everything, of course. Not about my wolf, or Elvaâs involvement. But I did explain that I had a twin sister who was caught up with the organization. I said Jane wanted to ruin my life to get me
desperate enough to fall into the undergroundâs web.
As I spoke, their gazes became more pitying than judgmental. By the end, they were outright angry on
my behalf.
It was something of a relief, to finally be able to tell someone the truth and to not have to bear the
weight of their misguided judgement anymore.
âSo this b*tch of a sister of yours is running around pretending to be you?â Tiffany asked. âAnd that was
her last night, being terrible to everyone?â
âYes,â I said. âAnd yes.â
Tiffany whistled. âI thought my family was messed up.â
âWe wonât be fooled again,â Veronica said.
âYeah, for sure.â Tiffany sighed. âSorry if we were jerks to you last night. It took a minute for us to put
two and two together.â
âYou donât have to apologizeâ¦â
âWe do,â Veronica said. âThe underground organization has taken from us both.â
Veronica and Tiffany glanced at each other. Julian lowered his hand from my shoulder to my lower back.
âThen weâre all in this together now,â Julian said. âWeâll have to work to take them down, but
âIâm in,â Veronica said.
âMe, too!â Tiffany added with a fist pump.
We all smiled at each other. It felt good, like I had just gained two more friends.
âPlease keep it a secret though,â I said. âItâs a secret I canât afford to have revealed yet.â
âYou must have your reasons,â Veronica said.
â
â
âMan, thatâs got to suck, not being able to tell anyone. Your sister must be getting you in a world of
trouble.â
After I nodded, they both agreed.
âYour secret is safe with us,â Veronica said. She always spoke definitively, so this gave me comfort.
Veronica and Tiffany then excused themselves to go to breakfast. I nearly joined them, when a good
look at Julian gave me pause. I waved them ahead without me.
âJulian.â
âHm?â
His eyes were red, bloodshot, with heavy bags hanging underneath them. He wavered unsteadily as he
stood, swaying back and forth. He looked terrible.
He looked exhausted.
âDid something happen?â I asked him.
âWhat do you mean?â He could barely keep his eyes open.
I gripped his arm to keep him from swaying too far in one direction.
âYou are dead on your feet.â
âOh, that? I just need some coffee and Iâll be fine.â He yawned. âNicholas kept me up all night. We kept trying to think up ways to trap Jane.â
Julian and Nicholas stayed up all night?
âWeâre not any closer, though,â Julian said with regret. âTrying to keep your secret. Trying to capture Jane without killing her. Weâre running out of options, especially with you under fire now.â
âShe hasnât hurt me.â
âDid you already forget the knife she held to your throat? Nicholas hasnât, I can tell you that much. And after last night? We canât decide if Jane wants to kill you or damage you beyond the point of return.
Neither option is ideal, obviously.â
I hadnât forgotten the knife to my throat, or the cold look in Janeâs eye. Nor had I forgotten all of Terryâs
dark promises.
Nicholas had a right to be worried about me.
âNicholas wants to tell the King the truth,â Julian said.
âI know.â I worried my bottom l*p with my teeth. âWhat do you think?â
â
âHeâs too close to Terry. Heâd never believe us â you over his brotherâinâlaw. His trust with Nicholas
and I goes a bit further, but even that has limits. If we donât have definitive proof that your sister exists,
and Terryâs involvement, the King will never believe us.â
âNicholas thinks otherwise?â
âHe wants to believe in our father. His dedication often renders him blind.â Julian yawned again. âUp all
night, and we have nothing to show for ourselves.â
âMaybe a nap would help,â I suggested. Fear gripped at my chest, but everyone needed rest. No great
plans were ever thought of in a sleepless delirium.
âCoffee,â he said. He patted my back in a comforting way. âHang in there, Piper. Weâre not down and out,
yet.â
âI donât knowâ¦â
Julian lifted his hand to my shoulder, drawing my eyes back to his. He was tired, but he held my gaze with tight focus as he said, âTerry wonât have you, Piper. Nicholas and I would die first.â
