Chapter 103
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
âSo, Serena-what did you study?â Dario started his interrogation after eying me for minutes straight There it was again that question. That same question I could not answer.
âIâm a college dropout; the only diploma I have is a high school diploma.â 1 chuckled and waited for Darioâs reaction.
âDo you hear that, dad?â Dario laughed as Mauro joined him. âIâm sorry, is there a problem?â
Christian asked.
âNo, no-no problem!â Dario shook his hands. âItâs just that I was one too-but look at where I am right.
now.â He proudly spoke.
âWait, really?â I asked with my mouth wide opened. Maybe it wasnât the end of me; perhaps I could really do it. âDid you go back to school?â I wondered. âI donât really have a good experience with school, but f was thinking of going back,â I told him.
âSchool?â He burst out laughing as Mauro joined him. Christian had an overly bothered look on his face, and I didnât know whether it was out of jealousy or hatred. âIf school isnât for you-then it isnât for you,â Dario explained.
âI never liked learning or working-so I never stuck my time and energy in it. My dad and I came from nothing and built our way up.â He spoke. âSo you donât think I should do it? Go back to school?â
âI think youâre wise enough to make your own decision.â Dario smiled. âHow about you Christian, how were your grades in school?â Dario asked him. âGood,â Christian growled.
âGood? They were the best-always top of his class.â Lucio bragged about him. âI can see.â Dario chuckled. âYou know, you have some good ideas-maybe we can work together in the future.â
âWork together? Thatâs funny.â Christian sighed. âDidnât you guys came here to drive us away?â
I almost choked in my food and gave Christian a look, telling him to shut up. âIâm just kidding; whatâs with the stiff faces?â He chuckled. Lucio let out a small laugh before everyone joined.
âYou almost got me there!â Dario laughed out loud. âLook, even the baby is laughing!â He pointed to Siena.
âWe came here to fill in the Garciaâs spot; we didnât come here to put an end to you. We wouldnât dare!â Dario smiled while Mauro nodded his head. I could feel Christianâs dark aura from next to me and could. feel that he had enough, but in fact, he was the one making the diner awkward.
âSo Serena, how about that poopy diaper your you promised me?â Dario winked. âPoopy what?â
Christian turned his head to face me.
âInside joke, donât worry about it.â Dario shrugged him off. âSo when?â
âWhenever youâre free!â I immediately spoke. âAnd after that, I can take you and Siena on a date, my treat.
Dario gave me another wink right before Christian slammed his fist on the table. âThatâs it, weâre out of here.â
âChristian?â Lucio called out, but Christian had already grabbed Siena out the chair and prepared himself to leave. âDid I do something out of line?â Dario wondered.
âYes, and if I stay any longer, I will too-Serena, letâs go,â Christian spoke as he pulled me from the chair with his free hand. âIâm so sorry. Iâm sure Dario didnât mean any harm!â Mario stood up as Lucio did the same.
âWell, dinner was very nice-but unfortunately, weâll have to cut it short.â Lucio apologized and placed his hand on Mauroâs shoulder while Christian had already stormed away. âChristian!â Lucio called out as he tried to catch up with him.
âIâm really sorry. I promise you-he isnât always like this.â I awkwardly laughed while Dario still had a startled look on his face. âSerena, if I crossed the line, Iâm so sorry; itâs just the way I am-I didnât mean anything by it!â
âNo, you didnât-and I will still give you the poopy diaper tour, give me your number!â I told him and pushed my phone into his hands, Christian behaving like a jealous toddler was definitely not a turn-
on and too confusing.
âWell, text me.â Dario chuckled and handed me my phone. âI mean, if Christian allows it-1 guess you need his permission.â
âLetâs stop right there-I donât need anyoneâs permission.â I made clear while Dario laughed at my statement. âI see, he says Serena. Letâs go, and youâre out within seconds.â Dario laughed at me before he imitated a dog.
âIf you still want that city your, youâll shut your mouth.â I laughed and gave him a push against his shoulder. âThank you so much for the invite, and you too, sir.â I walked over to Mauro to give him a hand.
âAs expected, the Alfonzoâs are so well mannered,â Mauro spoke as he held both of my hands.
âLucio was, too. I think the giant infant who was throwing a tantrum was the issue.â Dario laughed. I was supposed to defend Christian, but Darioâs way of talking was so funny that I couldnât help but laugh along.
âI really have to go now.â I excused myself one more time before I made my way to the driveway.
After seeing that Lucio had already left, I took a deep breath and made my way over to the car.
Christianâs nagging was the last thing I needed.
âCooled down?â I asked as I opened the door and sat down next to him. Christian was quiet and kept his mouth shut while he patiently waited for me to put on my seatbelt. At least he had somewhat of manners left.
The drive back home was as awkward as the time he brought me home for the first time. âChristian, if you donât tell me whatâs wrong, we canât fix it.â I finally decided to speak up.
He clenched his hands around the steering wheel and gave me an angry look before he focused his attention back onto the road. âChristian, come on-donât be like this. Youâre behaving like a child.â I giggled and stroke my hand against his cheek.
âYouâre not taking Siena anywhere with that guy.â He finally spoke. âI donât trust him.â
âI know youâre not telling me what I can and canât do with my daughter, who I have carried for nine months.â I chuckled at his ridiculous statement. âYou werenât even here for us in the beginning. I hope you didnât forget that.â
âAnd if we look at the state you were in nine months ago-she wouldnât even be here! I hope you didnât forget that.â Christian snapped. My heart broke into pieces, and my mind went numb. No matter what happened, these words were unnecessary and uncalled for.
Those words were enough to shut me up, and I did not have the energy to fight back. I tried to hold back my tears because there was no reason to cry. His words werenât right, I did everything I could to protect Siena, and at the end of the day, that was the real reason why she was here.
âI think itâs for the best if I leave tonight,â I told Christian when we arrived back home. âAnd Iâm taking my daughter with me,â I spoke as he stopped in his steps. âBecause I told you the truth?
Serena, I never called you a bad mom. Youâre a good mom. You know that.â
âIâm just politely asking you not to bring my daughter around random men? Would you like it if I would bring Siena around random women?â Christian asked.
To be fair, he had a point.
âItâs not what you said; itâs the way you said things-1 might have a ring around my finger, but Iâm not your puppet.â I glared at him. âAnd donât ever command me to follow you like a dog ever again!â
âWhat?â Christian spoke, annoyed. âThen what do you expect me to do when heâs flirting with you right in front of me, and you donât even do anything to stop it?â
âJust let him be. I ignored his comments, so whatâs the big deal?â I asked. âAnd if you think I was disrespecting you, then youâll wait until weâre home to address it.â
âDo you expect me to scold every woman who flirts with you?â
After that sentence, the expression on his face had changed from angry to guilty. There was no denying it. A lot of girls, even the women from the other families, flirted with him while I had accepted it.
âFine.â Christian sighed. âIâm sorry, Iâm sorry for everything I said about you-I love you, letâs forget about it-letâs move on.â
âThatâs not how it goes, Christian.â I stopped him from talking. âYou canât just tell me what I want to hear because you donât want me to take Siena.â
âIâm not, I donât like seeing you sad, and Iâm sorry.â He spoke as he took a step forward and grabbed my hands. âI was jealous, immature-stupid. I definitely do not see you like a dog, and if you really want to take Siena on this city tour, Iâll let you.â Christian apologized.
âLet me guess. Youâre coming along?â I playfully asked him and ended up accepting his apology.
âNo, Iâm not.â Christian sighed.
âComing along would only show you that I do not trust you, and I trust you with my entire life, and you should know that-so no, I wonât.â Christian smiled at me and cupped my face. âI do not want to argue with you, and I do not want to spend a night without the both of you.â
âYes, Iâm jealous, but you canât blame me-itâs because I donât want to share you.â Christian rested his head against my shoulder, âYouâre like a baby.â I laughed at him and pulled him closer. âYou require more attention than Siena.â
Dario âDo you now understand what I mean?â Dario slammed his arm around his fatherâs shoulder. âThe only thing we have to do is to mess with his personal life-heâll self-destruct.â
âLucio is a nice man, but if the rumors are true, he wonât be here for much longer-so heâs not our problem.â
âYes, but going after his fiancee? Donât you think thatâs going a bit too far, son?â Mauro laughed âNo.
uncleâ Dario shook his head.
âYou mean, dad Mauro patted his back.
âFollowing her to the grocery store and befriending her was part of the plan, but I genuinely like her as a person. Tell me she doesnât deserve better?â Dario spoke as he thought about Christianâs tantrum.
âI would never tell a woman to follow behind me like a dog, he disgusts me.â Dario scrunched up his nose.
âIâve decided to change my original approach,â Dario announced as he threw the investigation pictures of the past months onto the table.
âIll take Christianâs businesses and his fiancee.â
