Chapter 110
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
Christian âWho is there?â Lucio asked after hearing three knocks on the door. âItâs your favorite son!â Christian called out.
Lucio smiled and sat up straight. âGio? Come in!â He joked. Christian rolled his eyes and opened the door to enter the bedroom. âNo, itâs Enzo.â He chuckled. After hearing his sonâs name, the look on Lucioâs face had changed. âThen you can go again.â He spoke.
Christian sighed and walked over to the bed to hold his fatherâs hand. âI know you miss him a lot.â
âI donât.â Lucio growled. âI wonât forgive him, over my dead body.â
The sound of those words was a nightmare to Christian. He did not wished to see his dad stressed and wanted him to make up with Enzo, but he also didnât want a repeat of what happened at the Garciaâs estate.
âWhere are Serena and Siena? Are they sick of me already?â Lucio chuckled. Christian smiled back and shook his head. âI decided to come clean about my mistakes after all, so now weâre on a âbreakâ
whatever thatâs supposed to mean.â
âOh?â Lucio furrowed his eyebrows. âBut sheâs still wearing her ring, right?â
Christian smiled and thought of Serena and how thoughtful she was. She was still pissed, but she did not want to worry Lucio-so she asked for her ring back. âYes, sheâs still wearing it-sheâs just pissed, and she wants to poke me in my eyes, but you donât have to worry. Sheâll be home next week.â
âShe left home?â Lucio sighed. Christian did not want to burden his dad with this news, but the thought of Christian losing Serena bothered Lucio. âHow are you taking it? Please tell me youâre keeping it together?â Lucio worried.
He knew all too well about Christianâs lousy habit and was not in the mood for a relapse. âDad, I told you Iâm done drinking and smoking. I have Siena now, so I have to find another way to deal with my crap. Whether I like it or not.â
Lucio nodded his head and ruffled Christianâs hair the same way he did when he was younger.
âWhat are you doing?â Christian laughed as he pushed away his hand.
âI hadnât done that in years, I felt the need to do that at least one time before-â
âDad, donât do that.â Christian took a deep breath. âDonât say stuff like that. I canât take it when you say stuff like that. Please donât!â
âOkay.â Lucio smiled. âIf you donât want me to say stuff like that, then I wonât say stuff like that. Letâs live in the lie you want.â
Lucio stroke the back of his hand against Christian cheek with a satisfied smile on his face. He was worried for a while and thought Christian was going down the wrong path-but everything changed when Siena was born. The same Christian who had always been rude, cold, and unapproachable had turned into a kind, warm and loving father.
Others had called Lucio to tell him Christian was weak and would fail, but Lucio jumped on every opportunity to defend him. He did not mind him being soft. As long as he had his life together, he did not care. âDid you bring your laptop?â Lucio asked as he pulled out his bed tray table.
âCome lay next to your father. You liked that when you were little.â Lucio smiled while Christian crunched. his nose. âThe bed you and mom made us in? No thanks.â He spoke as he pulled out a chair and placed the laptop on the tray.
âI feel like Iâm going to school again. This is ridiculous. Iâm prepared-Iâve always been prepared.â
Christian rolled his eyes. âI know, but I want to do this so I can go in peace-â
âDad,â Christian warned him. He didnât like the sound of Lucio dying and did not want to talk about it. It was not like in the beginning and a lot had changed. Lucio became skinnier and sicker by the day. Even though all of the Lambertiâs knew the truth-the other families did not, and it would only be a matter of time. Hiding it was not possible anymore.
It took Lucio several hours to go through everything he had ever taught his son, and he would do it again and again until he did not have the power to speak anymore. âThe Lamberti name is in your hands, not in Gioâs hands-not in anyone elseâs hands, in yours.â Lucio ended his rant.
âAnd I know you donât want to hear it-but after Iâm gone, you will hear of uncles and cousins who were side-eyeing us and waiting for an opportunity. Itâs not theirs, itâs yours-but grandpa will help you.â Lucio promised. âYour grandfather chose you, so he will help you.â
Lucio felt terrible for burdening Franco, who had retired a long time ago, but also Franco did not want everything his late father build up to go up in flames, so he would be there for Christian.
âItâll be fine, I promise-and after that, Iâll give everything to Siena.â Christian nodded his head. His drive to continue the Lamberti businesses came from Siena. He was willing to do everything so Siena and Serena could have a good life.
âIt wouldâve been nice to see you get married before I completely give out-itâs so unfortunate.â Lucio sighed. Christian felt terrible because he knew it was one of his dadâs biggest wishes-but he also knew he brought it upon himself. No one told him to go and cheat on Serena, he did it all on himself, and he was ready to take responsibility.
After seeing his fatherâs health, he realized not coming clean about it being Gina was for the best.
He had a choice to tell Serena the truth, but he also had a choice to spare Lucio-and even though he loved Serena, his first choice wouldâve always been Lucio. Serena will survive, he will not, Christian thought. âSo, what are your plans for today?â Lucio asked.
Christian got the hint and knew Lucio wanted him to leave. Lucio was embarrassed by his health and didnât want anyone to see him like this, but Christian didnât care. âIâll give you your yogurt and your medicine, and after that, Iâll get out of your hair.â Christian smiled as he opened the cup of yogurt.
âSay, ah!â Christian teased him and played with the spoon. âIâm not an infant. Iâm your father.â Lucio growled while Christian laughed. He had not closed an eye since yesterday and missed taking care of Siena-but being able to take care of his dad made him happy. Taking care of others was his favorite thing to 1.
âIâm sorry.â Christian apologized after seeing the angry look on Lucioâs face and fed him his yogurt.
âI love you so much, son.â Lucio suddenly smiled.
âI know. I love you too, dad.â Christian chuckled. Ramiro had prepared him for this, and unlike before, Christian knew how to handle love. It was an unknown feeling to him-but after Serena and Siena came into his life, that thought had changed. âIâm sorry I wasnât there for you,â Lucio whispered.
âWhat? Donât say that!â Christian stopped him from talking. âItâs true. The only time I spend with you was to deal with our enemies. When you were younger, you cried, begged me to show them mercy-
asked yourself why your dad was such a monster, and Iâm so sorry. If I could go back in time to be a better father, I would.â
âI wouldnât want another dad, even if I were born in the next life, I would still want to be a Lamberti, now eat!â Christian spoke as he shove the spoon into Lucioâs mouth. âYou can go and sleep. You donât have to be awake for me.â Christian reassured him after he was finished.
âIâm not tired.â Lucio yawned. Christian held back his tears and rested his hand on Lucioâs forehead.
His worst nightmare was for his dad to close his eyes for the last time. It was for his dad to close his eyes, only for them not to open again. He couldnât bear the thought of it.
Right before closing his eyes, Lucio fell into a fit of coughing and grasped for his throat, while Christian immediately reached for a cup of water. âYouâre okay. Iâm here.â He whispered as he held the cup against Lucioâs lips.
âYouâre always here.â Lucio smiled as he closed his eyes and fell into a deep sleep. Christian sat back to watch his dad for several hours. He did not know for how long, and he did not care, but he was willing to look after Lucio for as long as he could.
He only left his side when Francesca came in to drag him out and he kissed his fatherâs head to say goodbye.
âIs there really no way for dad to forgive Enzo?â Christian asked as he joined his mom at the kitchen table. âI donât want them to end things like this, Enzo did a lot, but he risked his life to help us-and I know he and Isobel got us into this mess in the first place, butâ¦â
âChristian, I want the same thing-but we have to think about his healthâ Cesca sighed. Christian looked at the eye-bags under his momâs eyes, but he couldnât feel bad-he could only admire her. He knew Lucio was in good hands, and he knew his mom would be taking care of him until his last breath.
Others had often said how Cecsa never cared for anything other than her handbags and that she did not truly love Lucio, but just like Lucio, Christian knew it was a lie. There was no one else who loved his dad as much as his mom did.
âHow is my granddaughter doing?â Cesca smiled. âGood, sheâs fine.â Christian sighed. All he wanted was to take care of Siena, but he couldnât. He could still not understand how a four-month-
old baby could change his life, but he was okay with it. Siena was the first thing he thought about when he woke up and more. precious than his life.
Siena was his life and his motivation to become a better person.
âHow is Serena?â Francesca carefully addressed the situation. She heard just enough to know they were on a break, but she did not know why. âThereâs no good way to say this, but I cheated while she was locked in a safe house,â Christian spoke.
Francesca raised her hand to slap his cheek, but she lowered it at the last second and took a deep breath. âI cheated, and she wants to keep it between us. Sheâs protecting my image while she shouldnât have to.â Christian realized.
âThatâs because sheâs stupid enough to love you. Trust me-Iâm speaking from experience.â
Francesca rolled her eyes. âListen, Iâm not going to say anything else, but you better fix it,â
Francesca told him while Christian nodded his head. âI know I used to despise that girl, but I donât think youâve ever loved anyone as much as you love her. So fix it.â
âTrust me, mom, Iâm on it.â Christian sighed. He was trying to âfixâ his mistake, but Serena gave him the cold shoulder he deserved, and he did not want to push her. Serena leaving the house was already hard enough, but he did not stop her. He did not lock the doors like the old Christian would have, and let her go her way because he knew he had no right to do so.
âDid your dad talk to you about the Dario situation?â Cesca asked as Christian frowned his eyebrows. âNo? Did something happen?â
âNever mind, if he didnât tell you, then itâs not that important. Your dad told me he and Serena are getting along, but you should tell her not to talk about any business-related stuff with him.â Cesca spoke.
âSerena wouldnât do that. She doesnât even know about all of that because I donât tell her.â Christian chuckled. Unlike all the women from the other families, Serena did not care about anything and minded her own business.
âGood, that Dario guy is definitely something.â Cesca chuckled. âWhy, is he dangerous?â Christian immediately asked as he worried for Serenaâs safety. âDangerous?â Cesca scoffed. âThose people are so clean itâs crazy. Theyâre not dangerous, but definitely a bit shady.â
âShady, how?â Christian questioned. Francesca laughed and took a sip of her wine. âRumor has it theyâve been following you around ever since the whole Fabio thing and know your entire daily routine. Not just you, all of us. They even have us on camera. Turns out they knew about your dad all along, but for some reason theyâre keeping that part to themselves.â
âWhat, I donât understand?â Christian asked, confused while Cesca rolled her eyes. He understood as much as Dario keeping tabs on his life and sticking his nose where he shouldnât.
âYour cousin Samantha got exposed for cheating on her husband with one of the guys from another family. That Dario guy send her husband a picture of the guy leaving her house.â Cesca chuckled.
âExtremely embarrassing, right?â She laughed while Christian felt as if his world had fallen apart.
Pictures?
His first thoughts went to Serena, who was with Dario and his second thought went to Gina. If this rumor was indeed true, it meant Dario was already aware of everything. âYou came clean to Serena, so he canât ruin your life any more than youâve already done so yourself. He doesnât care about some random girl.â Cesca laughed and expected Christian to join in, but he didnât and he couldnât.
âWait, right?â Cesca asked with a worried look on her face.
Christian was prepared for the Orlandoâs and knew their ultimate goal was to stir issues and to break. alliances, but the pictures went a bit too far.
Christian buried his head between his hands and could only think of one thing, Serena.
This time Dario Orlando was one step ahead of him.
