Chapter 137
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
Christian âDad, are you so excited for the shoot?â Christian smiled. Lucio had been involved in everything, from hiring the photographer to choosing the location and the outfits.
Usually, Christian didnât like the thought of Lucio working harder than he should, but it seemed like his father was enjoying himself, so this time he didnât care about it. âI am. I feel like I can finally rest after this.â Lucio spoke as the smile on Christianâs face had vanished.
âDonât say that,â Christian spoke. âDonât say stuff like that.â
âWhy, does it makes you cry at night?â Lucio mocked him, but Christianâs expression had not changed. âOkay, I wonât say stuff like that anymore.â Lucio smiled.
Although Christian didnât want him to be in pain anymore, he didnât want to be without him either.
The only person stopping the Lambertiâs and the Alfonzoâs from killing each other was Lucio, Christian felt as if he had failed his father. He was supposed to lead the Lambertiâs, but he couldnât, and it was all because of his very own grandfather.
Ever since he came back, it seemed as if he was slowly trying to gain back his power through Christian. All the key decisions went through his grandpa. âWhy are you smiling at me?â Christian frowned.
âThatâs easy,â Lucio spoke. âIâm smiling because Iâm proud of you. Iâm impressed by the way you fought for Aldo Sala. I obviously donât know a lot anymore, but it almost makes me feel embarrassed to know that I did not give him a second chance when I couldâve.â Lucio sighed.
âYou were the first one to forgive him for Isobelâs mistake. I think thatâs more than enough.â
Christian was grateful for his fatherâs words, but he felt unworthy. Going behind all the familiesâ
backs to take back Isobelâs dad also came with many disadvantages. He went from cowardly killing Fabio Garcia with no chance to protect himself to cheating on the mother of his child to going behind everyoneâs back.
It seemed as if everything only got worse after he received power, and he didnât like the sound of that, just as much as he didnât like the sound of Dario trying to mess with his life, as if his life wasnât hard enough. âWhatâs going through your mind?â Lucio asked.
âNothingâ Christian lied. His grandpa, who had a big hand in what the Lamberti name was today, had an unbreakable bond with Lucio and Christian did not want to come between that. Especially not during his fatherâs last months.
âIsobel finally found some happiness in her life, isnât that great?â Lucio spoke. âI have a request.â
âWhat is it?â Christian asked, worried. âDo you need your medicine? Tea? More blankets?â
âNo.â Lucio reassured. âI was only going to tell you to take care of Isobel and Beau. It seems like Matteo is pushing that poor boy the same way I used to push you-â
âDid he came to see you?â Christian wondered. âYes, he stopped by with Matteo. Heâs such a nice and polite kid.â
Nice enough to kill me, Christian thought in his head as his mind went to Serenaâs brothers. None of them liked him any more, and it was well deserved.
âHave you checked up on Gina?â Lucio asked as Christian took a deep breath. He disagreed with his father, and he did not want to take care of her, but he wouldnât disrespect a dyingâs man wish. âYes. I have, and sheâs healthyâ Christian lied. Whatever Gina was up to wasnât his problem anymore.
He did have to admit that she was good at her work and took away many of his tasks. After not having her around, Christian slowly began to realize how much of a help she had actually been.
âDad, how about you rest for a while,â Christian suggested. âIf thatâs what you want.â Lucio sighed and closed his eyes as he was trying to force himself to sleep. Christian remained by Lucioâs side until he felt safe enough to leave his side and made his way downstairs.
âGrandpa-we need to talk,â Christian spoke. Franco was confused but followed Christian and was curious about his words. âHave you finally changed your mind about Serena?â Franco asked. âYou canât let her walk all over you-
âNo, youâre wrong.â Christian sighed. This time he was going to stick up for her. âSheâs not walking over me. All of you are doing that.â
âExcuse me?â Franco spoke, surprised. âYou heard me. Christian glared. âI appreciate you being here to help-but from now on. I want you and my mom to stay out of my personal life.â
âIs that what this is?â France asked. âI do not involve myself in your personal life because I want to, but Iâm doing it for the family! Iâm doing it because youâre a mess!â
âDonât forget who put your dad here, better yet-donât forget who put you here! I was the one who put you above your brothers because I thought you were capable of handling the family business. I was happy for you and Serena-but youâve changed a lot, and itâs all because of her.â
âYes,â Christian spoke. âI became a human being with a heart instead of the monster you wanted me to be, and itâs all because of her-and Iâm so grateful because she saved me before I had the chance to turn into my brothers or you.â
âWhich is?â Franco chuckled. âI put you in this position, and after your father is not here anymore, I can easily remove you from this position.â
âThen do it!â Christian yelled. âPlease do it, so I can take Serena and Siena and finally live a peaceful life. I was the one who hurt Serena, but somehow sheâs the problem?â
Franco gulped at Christianâs words. He had always admired Christianâs boldness, but until now, it was never used against him. Christian had lost his respect for his grandfather. âYou will drop everything for her?â Franco asked, confused.
âEverything.â Christian confirmed. âI will drop the entire family to be with her, you, grandma, uncles, cousins, siblings-1 donât care!â Christian yelled. âSo please give me your orders. If you donât accept Serena, please tell me to leave, and I promise you, youâll never have to hear from me again.â
âChristian? All of this over some woman?â Franco spoke, shocked, but Christian heard enough. âNo, listen to me. Why are all of you acting like Serena is the problem? I hurt her, so how exactly is she the problem? Serena has always been perfect. She never involved herself in any family business.
She doesnât ask any questions-
âStop it!â Franco shouted. âI donât even recognize you anymore. Since when did you become so weak?â
âYes, you cheated on her, and you never shouldâve done that, but that was no reason for her to act like some crazy animal and put this family to embarrassment. Sheâs working together with your enemy. She took Siena away from you, and now she bewitched you. The way she turned on you is scary.â Franco spoke, but Christian disagreed.
âNo, the way youâve all turned on her and the Alfonzoâs is scary.â
âDo you think Serena is sticking up for you at this very moment?â Franco laughed in disbelief. âDo you honestly think that she will give up her family so she can be with you? Donât be stupid.â
Francoâs words made him feel a sharp pain in his chest. Christian was aware that Serena didnât want to let go of her family, and he was okay with that decision. It wouldâve been so much easier if she was willing to do the same, but he wouldnât force her to do anything.
âYou brought back Aldo Sala, and it was probably to satisfy Serena because you miss her, you went against all families once again-you go so far for her, but sheâll never go that far for you. An Alfonzo will remain an Alfonzo, and theyâre good at keeping things professional. Itâs in their blood.â Franco spoke. âDo you even know what youâve done by starting an alliance between the Alfonzoâs and the Salaâs? Do you even think about this family?â
Christian tried to think of an answer, but he failed to reply as he could see somewhat of the truth in his grandpaâs words. Worst case scenario, the Alfonzoâs and the Salaâs would start an alliance to remove the Lambertiâs from the top, but Christian trusted Serena. Serena would never encourage them to do that.
âJust a few months ago, you were all desperately trying to save herââ
âNot her, Siena. Your daughter is a Lamberti. Serena was carrying a Lamberti. If she were not pregnant, nobody wouldâve fought for her, and thatâs the harsh truth.â
âYou disgust me,â Christian spoke. He made a promise with himself, and that promise was to never become like his grandpa.
âChristian, I need you to listen to me, and I will only tell you this once,â Franco warned him.
âI want you to mark these words. Serena will be your downfall. Sheâs playing you, she will break you until you have no more air left to breathe, and when that day comes, youâll be thinking back on this conversation we had. Serena is dangerous, and she is not good for you. Sheâs too strong, too confident. She will be your downfall and the familyâs downfall.â
âThatâs not true,â Christian whispered. He was determined to prove his grandfather wrong. âI wonât allow you to leave the business. Thatâs too easy for you.â Franco chuckled. âIâll let you keep everything, and the day she ruins you, and youâll come crawling back to me, Iâll take care of you the same way I took care of your uncle-because thatâs what Iâm here for. Iâm here to take care of my children and grandchildren.â
âAnd I will prove you wrong.â Christian glared. He couldnât stand his grandpa at the moment. He couldnât. stand anyone who had something bad to say about Serena.
âThat gazeâ¦itâs the same look your uncle used to give me when his first wife possessed him, and youâre following in his footsteps,â Franco spoke. âHow dare you to give me that look? Iâm your grandfather, and I put you here.â
âI donât care,â Christian whispered. All he could focus on were his grandpaâs words. It was not the first time he heard this comment about his uncleâs first wife but only now were they starting to get through to him.
There was a possibility that, that woman was Darioâs mother.
âIâm speaking from experience. Youâll crawl back to me and beg me to save you.â Franco told him.
âJust like your uncle Berto.â
âSerena is nothing like his first wife. Stop this nonsense.â Christian spoke as he was trying to get more information, and it seemed to be working.
âYes, she is. From trying to keep Siena away from you to working with the enemy and starting a charity. I donât know if it got through to her or not, but weâre not some government-sponsored clubhouse. Weâre trying to take our distance from that stuff.â
Trying to keep Siena away from you.
That was the only sentence that had reached Christianâs ears. He had a pretty good reason to believe that his uncleâs first wife kept Dario away from the family and was secretly hoping Serena was able to find out some more information.
âTell me more about this woman so that I can make my own judgment,â Christian spoke. He did not want to spill anything to his grandpa and had to do this the smart way. There was already more than enough. shit going on for him to make a mistake. He would deal with Dario without involving anyone else..
âI told you, Serena, and those bold actions of hers will be your downfall. Thatâs all you need to know.â Franco spoke as he prepared himself to leave.
âIâm begging you not to start anything at the upcoming photoshoot.â Christian sighed. He would not allow anyone to ruin Lucioâs day, not even his grandfather. âI would never hurt my son. I always put my own. family first. Franco replied.
Christian chuckled as his grandpa walked out of the room. Also, he would never do anything to hurt his family ever again, and that was why he was willing to fight for Serena. If only she were willing to do the same for him.
He wasnât that excited about the double date and did not want to see Beau, but he agreed to it because it was a way to make up with Serena.
He would not stop until she was back in his arms.
