Chapter 144
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
Today would finally be the day. Just as promised, I scheduled a meeting between Christian, my parents, and my brothers.
There was only one thing stopping me, and that was Christian refusing to enter the house. âCome on, donât be such a baby.â I giggled and pinched his cheeks.
âStop it.â Christian spoke, annoyed. âItâs not that Iâm scared. Itâs just that I donât know how Iâll react-]
donât know if I can sit there and watch them glare at me.â
âYou can.â I smiled. âYou can and you will, for me.â
I squeezed his hand and gave him a sad look until he finally gave in. âFine, letâs go.â Christian sighed. I nodded my head and pulled his hand to lead him inside, where my family was already waiting for us.
The angry looks were not that difficult to miss. âWhat is the meaning of this?â Matteo growled as Christian and I sat down on the opposite side of him.
âYou donât even have to say anything,â I whispered to Christian. âAll you have to do is keep your m shut, and Iâll handle it.â
âHandle what?â Emilio asked and looked from me to Christian. âJust let me do the talking.â I whispered Christianâs words could come off as rude because that was his way of talking, and I did not want to make things worse. âWhat is he doing here?â Marcello asked with a confused smile on his face.
âGuys, sit down,â I instructed. âSit down, listen, and please keep your mouth shut until Iâm done talking.â âYouâre ordering us around now?â Matteo commented. The bothered look on his face told me that he knew exactly where this was going. âItâs not that different from you ordering us around.â
Beau stuck up me. He was the only one I could count on. âThanks, Beau.â I smiled.
âLong story short, Christian and I are getting back together, and Iâll be moving back home with Siena.â
I observed everyoneâs reaction and watched as their surprised look slowly changed to angry frowns.
It seemed like only Beau, and surprisingly Emilio stood by my side. âThatâs funny.â Lita laughed.
âGive me one reason why I shouldnât put a bullet through his head, right this instant!â Matteo glared at Christian.
for Keep your mouth shut, Christian, I thought to myself. I told him I would handle it, so I would. The last thing I needed was for his bad temper to get involved. It would only make things worse.
âDonât you get tired?â Christian sighed while I mentally smacked myself. So much for telling him to stay quiet. âDonât you ever get tired of being angry all the time?â
âExcuse me?â Matteo frowned. âSerena is trying to explain something, and you wonât even listen to her, all of you, so maybe I can get through to you,â Christian spoke.
âSerena and Siena are coming back home, where they belong-and Serena is not asking you for permission. Sheâs just informing you.â Christian glared. âSheâs not your dog.â
Well, that was one way to put it.
âSo you expect me to let you take them with you after embarrassing this family by cheating on my daughter with your assistant and after making a fool out of her? And I donât know if you remember, but also threatened us!â Matteo spat. âSerena.â He spoke with hopeful eyes. âPlease think this through.â
âI did.â I sighed. It mightâve been a spontaneous decision, but I knew what I wanted and what I wanted was to be with Christian and to prove Cesca wrong.
âI thought this through many times, and this is what I want-so please respect my decision.â
âNot when this decision will damage the family!â Matteo spoke. I also wondered if this man ever got tired of being so negative. He was so kind at first, but it only took a few weeks before he decided to show me his true colors.
It was almost the same as with Marcello and Emilio. I remember how thrilled I had been at the idea of having two older brothers, and they used to treat me like a princess, but also that didnât last for long.
âThatâs fine-then I wonât be part of this family!â I raised my voice. If Christian would be willing to go that far for me, it would only be that fair of me to do the same.
âAll I asked you to do was to sit down and listen!â I spoke. âAre you guys stupid?â
They were not getting in the way of my life anymore. âD-did you just call us stupid?â Emilio asked, shocked, while Matteo was seconds away from exploding.
âYes,â I nodded. âChristianâs right, Iâm not asking you for your permission. Iâm telling you. Everything got blown out of proportion and whatever there is to fix, is between the two of us, and I appreciate your concerns but I will be going back home.â I scoffed.
âYes, Christian is a disgusting. lying, cheating asshole-no offense,â I whispered the last part to Christian. âBut thatâs for us to work out. Thatâs not up to you anymore. This isnât about pride and families anymore. I donât care about that. Itâs about Christian and me.â
âSo you are making these kind of decisions without us?â Lita asked. These people just didnât know how to stop. âYes? Thereâs nothing to discuss. Iâm just being kind by telling you.â I chuckled in disbelief.
âWhat about the video?â Marcello worried. âItâs everywhere!â Emilio added.
It was so sad that also he was under the influence of this terrible family, because a few days ago, he and Christian had a great time.
âGuys, between a viral video of me fighting or everyone knowing mom and dad send little Beau and Serena away because they didnât want to fight for us-which one is worse? Iâll let you decide.â
Everyone kept their mouths shut as there was nothing left to say. They kept talking about the family name. and the family pride, which had already been destroyed in the first place. âSerena, Iâm just looking out for you and my granddaughter.â Matteo sighed.
âI appreciate the way Christian fought for your life, and I appreciate him helping out Beau and yes, it was a big help to us-thank you for that,â Matteo told Christian. âBut I donât think getting back together is the right idea, and I also donât appreciate you asking my son to work for you.â
âHe didnât do that.â Beau defended Christian. âHow many times do I have to tell you that I asked so myself!â
âBeau asked me because heâs getting sick of you. I think we all are.â Christian spoke. Just shut up.
Just keep your mouth shut.
âI know you hate me and donât want to see me again, donât worry-Iâm not that big of a fan of you either.
We donât have to see each other ever again, but Iâm taking Serena and Siena with me,â Christian stated.
Bonus âDonât be ridiculous. Thatâs not true.â Matteo muttered. âI donât hate you, I held you in my arms since the day you were born, and I loved you like a son-but I canât ever forgive you for cheating on my daughter while she was pregnant or for threatening us after everything weâve done for you. I just donât think itâs a good idea.â
âJust how you decided me seeing my daughter was also not a good idea?â Christian chuckled.
âBecause Iâm not stupid, and I know you encouraged Serena to make that decision.â
Christian was waiting for Matteo to speak, but Matteo looked at me with a pained expression on his face. He was probably wondering what was wrong with me for getting back together with him, but I was doing what felt right.
âItâs sad because Serena grew up without you, and now you want Siena to go through the same thing. Iâm not taking them away from you. If I really wanted to do that, I wouldâve done that a long time ago.â Christian spoke. âDonât let Siena pay for my mistake.â
âSerena.â Lita looked at me. âPlease think this through, okay?â
âYou can stay here with us, your family, and weâll never hurt youââ
âI donât want to.â I glared at Lita. âYouâve done more than enough, I donât want to, and Iâm done with being brainwashed by all of you. All I have to say to you is that you have two options, youâll either accept this or Iâll never speak to any of you again-Iâve only known you for a while, so it wonât even matter.â
That was a lie.
I didnât want to lose my family.
âFine,â Matteo whispered. âYou go ahead and live your life as a Lamberti, but please donât crawl back to me when everything backfires.â
That was it?
They werenât going to fight for me?
âDad, I donât want to choose between the two of you.â
âYou already have.â Matteo sighed as he stood up from his chair. âGo back to that cheater if thatâs what you want, Iâll stay out of it-just like you asked me to!â
âThis has to end!â Christian spoke as everyone turned their heads to look at him. âThis thing is not going. anywhere, and my dad would be so disappointed in all of us. This has to stop!â
Matteo took a deep breath and sat back down to listen to Christianâs words. âIâm so sorry for everything Iâve ever done, and I donât care if you want to forgive me or not, but our families are falling apart, and we canât let that happen,â Christian explained.
âThatâs not true.â Emilio sighed. âWeâre still doing business together-â
âFor how long?â Christian asked. âIâm sorry for embarrassing Serena and your family, and Iâm sorry threatening all of you, and Iâm sorry for being selfish, but I want to take care of Serena and Siena-so Iâm asking you for a second chance.â Christian requested. Everyone was flustered, and so was 1, because 1 wasnât used to him apologizing in a row.
âKeep talkingâ Matteo cleared his throat. âMatteo, I actually donât want to argue with you,â Christian told him. âYouâre all like family to me, and Iâve spend more time with all of you than Iâve ever done with my own family, Lita-I donât want you to hate me either.â
âI donât.â Lita sighed. âOf course, I donât hate you. Hate is a big word.â
âYou taught me how to take my first steps, and youâre the only sane friend my mom ever had, so please letâs stop all of this. Letâs start over again.â Christian suggested. âWhat are we even arguing about? The only one who has the right to kill me or to be angry is Serena.â
âI agree,â Beau spoke. âAnd Serena forgave him, so itâs time to end all of this. You guys are always talking about doing whatâs best for her, but canât you all see sheâs broken?â
âWhat he said.â I agreed with Beau. âAll I want is for all of this to end and for all of us to get along again.â I smiled.
âI was so happy when I found out that our families were so close and so happy to know Christian practically grew up here, and all of this is my fault-â
âItâs not your fault!â Everyone spoke in unison. I laughed at their encouraging words, but I was partly to blame. I couldâve handled this issue with Christian, but I was the one who decided to involve my family in this and asked them for advice without knowing the impact it would have.
âAll I want is to start over,â Christian spoke. âLetâs forget about everything and start over.â
Matteo looked at Emilio and Marcello, who shrugged their shoulders. âWhat about letting Beau work for you? Donât you think thatâs a little disrespectful?â
âItâs not,â Beau spoke. âLetâs keep it real. Iâve never really been one of you.â He chuckled. That was typically Beau. Only he knew how to ruin a peaceful moment. âI mean, it could be a good thing-
someone has to keep an eye on him.â Matteo shrugged.
âSo, does this mean youâre giving me a second chance?â Christian asked. His actions made me love him even more. I was not used to him using gentle words and knew he probably cringed at the moment, but I. knew he was doing it all for me.
âChristian, I need you to listen very well.â Emilio sighed and leaned over the table. âIf you ever hurt my little sister again, I will kill you with my own bare hands. I will stab you and bury you alive. Am I making myself clear?â
âI understand,â Christian spoke, completely unfazed. Christian remained fearless. As long as it wasnât Beau, there was no reason to stress. âI feel a bit sad, though. I donât want you to go.â Lita sighed.
âFirst Beau, then you, Siena-I thought I finally had you back.â
âYou can come over whenever you want. The door is always open.â Christian reassured her as he reached for her hand. âThatâs because you donât lock your front door,â Beau muttered.
âI will, I promise.â Christian smiled. âSo when is Serena moving back?â Marcello asked.
âNext week.â I said. They did not have to know the reason and they did not have to know that I wouldnât return until Christian got rid of the bed. âCarmen will be so sad. She really loves Siena.â
Marcello spoke. âShe used to be so lazy, but she was finally doing something.â
âAnd what about Beau?â My mom asked. âWhen is Beau starting?â
âTomorrow,â Christian replied. That was right. We still had to discuss the Dario situation. âWhat about Marc or your cousin, Johnny?â Emilio wondered. âWill they be okay with this?â
âThe three of you are like the three musketeers. They wonât get jealous, right?
âIâm the boss,â Christian chuckled while Matteo gave him a slight smack on his cheek. âLucioâs still breathing, donât get ahead of yourself!â
It was nice to see how things were slowly getting back to normal as Matteo was able to joke around again. âWhereâs Siena?â Christian asked.
âSheâs with Carmen,â I explained. âShe really loves her, Carmen seems like a completely different person.â
âSheâs getting good grades, goes outside-makes friends,â Marcello added. âThatâs why I feel bad for her. Maybe you should just let her move in with you.â
âMaybe we should.â Christian nodded. âThe house is big enough, and sheâll make a great babysitter, so sheâs more than welcome to stay if she wants to-â
âNo.â Lita pouted. âI canât lose another child. Sheâs staying here.â
âThe house is so quiet at times. Thatâs why I need you all to give me more grandchildren, Serena.
Itâs time for another baby-donât you think?â Lita suggested, but all I could see in front of me was a nightmare. What point of no more babies did they not understand?
âThatâs what I told her, but she doesnât want to have more children!â Christian explained. Perhaps it was indeed better when they didnât get along.
âBeau is giving you two.â I reminded her as I scratched the back of my neck. I had to remove myself from this situation.
âAnyway, it was a nice talk. We should start packing, donât you think?â I asked Christian and grabbed his arm to pull him away.
âWe should.â Christian smiled as he followed behind me.
âI want you to move in as soon as possible.â
