Chapter 160
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
I woke up to the sound of giggles and laughter and rubbed my eyes to watch how Christian held Siena in his arms.
âWhat is she doing awake? Itâs so early.â I yawned, exhausted and looked at the clock. â6 AM? She should be asleep.â
âIâm sorry, did we wake you?â Christian asked, worried. âIâm sorry, I couldnât help myself. I just had to see her.â
I smiled at the innocent look on Christianâs face and sat up straight to take a better look at Siena.
âShe doesnât seem to mind.â
âI know.â Christian smiled. âYour sister took really good care of her. Sheâs really helpful.â
âDid you ask her about moving in?â Christian asked. He seemed to like her, which was something very unlikely for him. âI did. Sheâs going to talk to my parents about it.â
âAnd I also want to thank you for being so sweet about Carmenâs little crush on you.â
âRight, that.â Christian laughed awkwardly. âIt would not be the first time someoneâs little sister has a crush on me. Iâve dealt with these kinds of things before.â
It was amazing how he never missed an opportunity to brag about himself, but I didnât mind. All I wanted was to see him happy, and if it made him happy, so be it. âSo, did you check on Enzo and Gina? Are they willing to talk? For how long will Gina be here?â I wondered.
The expression on Christianâs face had changed, and he seemed bothered by my question.
âSerena, I donât want to argue with you.â He spoke his usual words. That was a sentence I hadnât heard in a while.
âIâm not trying to argue with you. I just want to know how they are doing.â I chuckled at his ridiculous. accusation. âOh, well.â Christian shrugged. âMaybe Iâm a bit traumatized from yesterday, so please, excuse me.â
His words made me feel uncomfortable, and I couldnât get rid of the feeling of him being bothered by my presence. I told him to talk to me if I went too far, but I never told him to make these kinds of comments. âIâm sorry about yesterday, okay?â I apologized once again. âI will be nice from now on, now please tell me what they said.â
âGood.â Christian chuckled. âYouâre always so curious, so thereâs no point in not telling you. Youâll figure it out either way.â
It was a good thing he knew how my brains worked. I would find out one way or another.
âThey both mentioned a man with a mask,â Christian explained. âThey didnât see his face, but Enzo recognized his voice, and he had a feeling thatâs itâs indeed my uncle.â
âWhat happened after?â I asked after noticing Christian ended the conversation as soon as he started it. âHe tried to get information out of them.â
âOkay?â I spoke, confused. He was holding things back from me while I thought we had left that stage a long time ago. âHow about you be a bit more specific? What kind of information?â
âInformation about the Lamberti warehouse,â Christian replied as if it would make things easier for me. âAnd whatâs in the warehouse?â I tried to get out of him, but his deep sigh told me that it wasnât going to happen. âYou were never interested in this kind of stuffââ
âBut I am now.â I corrected Christian. âYouâre right, I didnât ask because I didnât want to pressure you, but itâs time to speak up.â
âSerena, please.â Christian spoke, annoyed. âYou know Iâm willing to share more with you, but itâs better if you donât know-â
âBut Gina knows?â I asked. Of course Gina knew, Gina also knew Christian cheated on me before I knew. Gina knew everything.
âYes, because she worked for me!â Christian raised his voice. âYou know what, leave it!â I yelled at him. âI donât get you. First, you want me to be a bit more involved. Then you donât want me to be involved. Please make up your mind!â
âI do want you to be more involved, but youâre asking me questions I donât even have the answer to,â Christian spoke. What was so dangerous about telling me more information about that warehouse?
âSo you canât tell me about whatâs in your family warehouse? Thatâs funny.â I chuckled. He wanted me to be a Lamberti, but he wasnât willing to share everything, I wondered where that same energy was when he brought me along to save his brother yesterday.
âStop it.â Christian sighed. âIâm doing everything for a reason.â
âPlease donât tell me youâre shipping off some girls on a boat?â I asked, frightened. That was the first question I asked him about the family business, and he immediately denied it. What if it was all a lie?
âWhat? No, stop it.â Christian spoke, disgusted. âI already told you that the Lambertiâs donât do that-
how could you even think that about us?â Christian asked as he looked down at Siena. âI would never do that.â âThen just tell me whatâs in there-I promise you I can take it. I donât care about weapons, drugs, or food âSerena, please-â
âIs it because of Gina and Enzo?â I continued my interrogation. I was going to get an answer out of him, that was for sure. How could I help him make the right decisions if I did not know what was going on?
It took some time for Christian to answer my last question, and that was enough for me to know that it was all because of his fears. Gina and Enzo were in a terrible state because they knew too much, and Christian blamed himself for it. It seemed as if everything was related to that warehouse.
âChristian, please, why did you suddenly change your mind-
âBecause Iâm trying to protect you!â Christian yelled at me. I was surprised by his outburst and immediately looked at Siena, who seemed completely unfazed, and stared at him with her big brown eyes. âWhy canât you fucking listen for once? Iâm trying to protect you!â
Listen? Maybe he had a point. I made a promise not to bring down his mood anymore, but I hadnât changed a thing. I was still getting on his nerves. He was broken, his dad was on the verge of dying, and the last thing he needed was my annoying behavior.
âDonât yell in Sienaâs ear. Are you crazy?â I huffed, embarrassed, and threw my arms around his shoulders. to cheer him up. âAnd donât swear around her either, grumpy.â
had no choice but to give me a smile in return. âItâs not like sheâll babble fuck? Itâs a baby.â He rolled his eyes.
âSo is Milo.â I reminded him. âBut somehow, you managed to teach my nephew a new word.â
âYouâve been awake for a few minutes, and youâre already annoying. Itâs a record.â Christian laughed. âGo back to sleep. Iâm begging you.â
The mood had switched and it didnât even seem as if something had happened just a few seconds ago.
âWe canât go on like this, Serena.â Christian acknowledged. âWeâre going back to the way we were before we had Siena, and I donât want to go back to that, ever again.â
âMe neither.â I agreed. âAnd thatâs why I need you to stop protecting me. Please tell me everything.
Okay?â
Christian blinked his eyes and was unsure what to say, but I wouldnât let him win this time. âOkay?â I repeated in his car over and over until he got sick of me.
âOkay, fing-you can stop now!â Christian laughed. âBut I still wonât take you to the warehouse.â He spali âItâs for your own safety.â
âThereâs another thing,â Christian spoke without meeting my eyes. âGina is going to stay here for a âOkay.â I shrugged. I didnât even want him to finish that sentence because her presence was already enough to make me sick, but I didnât want to argue with him again.
Gina was an issue which I would deal with. It wouldnât hurt to give her a visit so she could understand that Christian was not hers. âItâs your house, and you pay the bills-do whatever you want,â I spoke calmly. âJust donât cheat on me again.â
âR-right,â Christian muttered as he took a deep breath. âYou donât have to worry about that. I definitely learned my lesson.â
âLetâs hope so.â I smiled through my pain, but all I could think of was Gina and the way Christian held her in his arms. It bothered me, and there was nothing I could do about it. âAnd itâs your house too, I donât want to hear that weird comment anymore.â
âSo I can count on you to take care of them, right?â Christian asked.
âCount on me to what?â I furrowed my eyebrows. I would be taking care of Gina, but it wouldnât be nice.
âTo take care of them,â Christian repeated. âGina and my brother?â
âYes, yes-definitely.â I nodded with an exaggerated smile on my face. âGina and your brother? They are in good hands.â
Enzo would be, but I wasnât that sure about Gina.
âI want to schedule a meeting with Dario. I think my cousin and I have a lot to discuss.â Christian suddenly spoke. âCousin?â I asked, surprised. âSo you can acknowledge him as your cousin?â
Christian rolled his eyes and threw a pillow to my face. âIâm just doing what you told me to, and I think you might have a point,â Christian said. âI need to get him on my side before my uncle decides to forgive him.â
and âThatâs what I told you.â I shrugged proudly. âIâm sure Dario knows more than what heâs telling us, your uncle going as far as beating the crap out of Enzo and Gina mustâve meant he wanted something from that warehouse.â
âI know,â Christian spoke. âIâm not sure what he wants, though.â
âAnd your grandpa?â I suggested. âIâm sure he knows, I mean-it used to be his business. There has to be more to it.â
Telling him to get Franco involved also went against my own will, but at the end of the day, he was the true boss of the family. âYouâre right.â Christian sighed. âI just donât want to tell him about my uncle, I donât want to do that to my dad-and I donât want the Lambertiâs to do anything stupid,â
Christian explained.
âMy uncle beat up his own nephew. Itâs obvious that heâs a monster, and I donât want to push him. Iâll let him reveal himself when he wants to reveal himself.â
âI know.â I smiled as I placed my hand on top of Christianâs. âHow about we get the information without mentioning your uncle? What do you think about that?â
heâs âThat sounds like a really good plan.â Christian chuckled. âBut I canât just go there and ask him what the deal is with the warehouse-till this very day. Itâs still in his control.â Christian confessed. âItâs like married to that place-and it has always been like that, even when he handed down the business to dad.â
my âI see,â I muttered as I went into deep thoughts. There had to be a way to get Franco to talk. âHow about I go and talk to your grandpa?â I suggested. âI know how to get on his nerves-Iâll get you the information by today.â
âWill you?â Christian laughed out loud. âAre you going to read his mind or something?â
âYes.â I nodded. It was so easy to get under Francoâs skin, and that man despised me so much to the point he used to spit out all kind of rubbish. I knew I could break that old man and give Christian exactly what he wanted.
âGive me one day. Iâll get you the information.â
âYouâre not that special, so will Iâ Christian shrugged. I will get that information out of Dario, just wait and see.â
âOh, will you?â I laughed at his confidence. âHow about we make it a competition. Letâs find out who can get the most information in 24 hours.â
âDeal,â Christian spoke. âAnd if I win, you have to take me to that warehouse and you have to involve me in every little thing.â I told him.
âYou wonât win, my grandpa wonât tell you anything.â Christian smirked. âBut fine.â
âI will give you anything you want.â
