Chapter 161
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
âSiena, itâs time to see that grumpy, old, annoying, rude-hating grandfather of yours!â I complained as I walked through the Lamberti estate. âAnd when did you get so heavy?â
âLet me help you!â A voice behind me called out. I turned around in surprise and looked at Gio, who grabbed the seat from my hands. âSheâs looks so much like you.â He smiled and looked down at Siena.
âHow are you holding up?â
âMe?â I asked, surprised. It was still a bit hard to get used to the fact that the brother who used to hate me the most turned out to be a really warm and kind person. âYes, you.â Gio laughed. âA lot has happened, but youâre back just as expected.â
âJust as expected?â I frowned while Gio shrugged his shoulders. âYes, you and Christian belong together- and I, unfortunately, found out the harsh way.â He explained. âDana and I knew the two of you would work things out.â
âDana? How is she doing-is the baby still not here yet?â I asked. I was so selfish that I hadnât even thought about Dana or the baby, and I never asked Christian about it either.
âNo, itâs been a week, but he still has no plans to show himself.â Gio sighed. âI understand, because this family is a bit crazy.â
âHow about the family shoot? Will she make it?â I wondered. It would be nice to hang out with someone sane afterward. âYes, donât worry-sheâll make it.â Gio reassured me.
âWhat are you and Siena doing here without Christian?â Gio wondered. The poor guy didnât even know that his uncle was still alive or that we saved his brother from death, but Christian did it for a reason. Gio had more than enough to worry about.
âChristian went out toâ¦work?â I made up on the spot. âAnd Iâm here to visit your grandpa.â
âGrandpa?â Gio asked, confused. âNot my dad, but my grandpa?â
âYes.â I smiled. âIâm here for your grandpa. I know itâs weird, but I made this stupid bet with Christian, so here 1 am-â
âBet? What kind of bet?â Gio chuckled as we walked through the door. âWhatâs in for you if you win?â
Shit. How would I get myself out of this one?
âA tour through the Lamberti warehouse.â I shrugged him off. It was better to tell him the truth. âAnd itâs just a bet about how long Iâll be able to survive with your grandpa.â
âChristian promised to take you to the Lamberti warehouse?â Gio frowned. âNot even Dana has been there and weâve been together for years.â
Gio gave me a suspicious look, but he didnât mention it again and pushed the seat into my hands instead. âWell, good luck.â He smiled and took one last look at Siena.
âHow is Beau doing?â
âGood, heâs doing good, and Christian has also been really good to him,â I told Gio, who seemed to be pleased with that information. âI heard he knocked up Isobel. Thatâs cute. I hope it works out for them.â
âExcuse me?â I spoke, flustered by his sudden statement. âWow, Iâm sorry-I didnât mean it like that.â
Gio gasped and smacked his hand in front of his mouth. âI forgot about you and Christian-
âItâs okay.â I reassured him. âIt was a bit different with them, though, because they were actually together âIâm sorry.â Gio apologized. âI wasnât thinking, and I didnât mean it like that-please donât tell Christianâ
He whispered the last sentence. âThe last thing I need is for him to threaten me again.â Gio joked.
âNow, why would he do that?â A voice suddenly interfered. I closed my eyes and prepared myself to face Franco. âHeâs your brother, and youâre nothing like Enzo-donât you think?â
âEnzo didnât even think about visiting your dad. Heâs just like your grandma.â He muttered under his breath. Although Enzo was kidnapped, he wasnât even welcome because of Lucioâs request, so I didnât know what this man was talking about.
âGrandpa!â Gio greeted him and pulled him into a hug. âYouâre still alive.â
âYes, unfortunately.â Franco scoffed while he looked at me. It was still beyond me how much this man disliked me while I hadnât done a thing, but I was determined to get to the bottom of it.
Just as I was determined to get to the bottom of the Lamberti warehouse.
âGrandpa, donât give Serena a hard time-come on.â Gio stuck up for me. âI went through the same thing. and she obviously isnât going anywhere, so you might as well get used to it, right Serena?â
âYes, what he said.â I agreed. âI didnât come here to argue with you-I came here to talk.â I smiled and pulled out the bag of liquor. âI even brought you a drink. I only want to talk.â
Francoâs eyes moved to the bag in my hands. âIâm not the one to turn down good liquor, and Iâm curious. as to what kind of rubbish will be leaving your mouth this time, so you know what? We should talk.â
âYes, and I will remove myself from this situation.â Gio laughed. âThe two of you have fun and donât kill each other.â
It was uncomfortably quiet the moment Gio left is alone. I gave Franco a big smile and knew I had to win this bet, no matter what. âYou can hold the liquor or your granddaughter. Itâs up to you.â I started the conversation.
Franco ignored me and grabbed Siena instead. He walked off and left me behind, startled, while I was unsure what to do. âAre you coming or not?â He asked.
âYes!â I spoke back and tried to catch up with him. âThanks for the invite.â
âInvite? Youâre already here.â Franco commented.
âYou are right, I am here,â I spoke as I followed him to the living room. Franco placed Siena on the floor and put his hand behind her back. âWhy isnât she crawling yet?â He asked, surprised.
âMaybe because sheâs just five months?â
âChristian crawled with five months.â Franco shrugged.
Christian wasnât that different from his grandfather, but the only difference was that one loved me while the other one didnât want anything from me.
I wasnât in the mood for any of his comments, and I came here with a clear goal. I came here to get more information on the warehouse, and I knew how to play my cards right.
âI came here because I want to talk to you about a comment you once made about me,â I told Franco. âYou compared me to Christianâs uncle, first wife, or something like that?â I played along as if I was stupid.
âI did.â Franco nodded. âI said you were going to be the downfall of this family. Iâm glad you remembered.
âI donât want to be anyoneâs downfall, and thatâs also not my plan,â I mentioned. âThe only thing I want to do is to be there for Christian.â
âI already apologized for the video, but if I crossed the line with something else-I would like to know.
because I want to fix it,â I told Franco. If I would just push him a bit more, he would be more than willing to talk. âPlease tell me what she was like? So I can prevent that kind of behavior in the future.â
âNosy.â Franco snarled. âShe was too involved and too nosy, and youâre no different from her.â
He clearly had no issues bringing me down. âChristianâs grandmother and I were always begging him to find a decent girl for once, and I liked you at the beginning-but youâve changed a lot.â
âChanged how?â I asked. It was something I heard a lot, but as far as I was concerned, I was still the same. I became stronger, but that was not an issue.
âYouâre too loud. All you have to do is sit still and do nothing-â
âBecause Iâm a woman?â I speculated. âBecause if thatâs the reason, then I want to tell you that youâre wrong,â
Franco held Siena in the air and kissed her cheek. âDonât be ridiculous!â He hissed. âItâs not because youâre a woman, everything will go to Siena, and I have no problem with that. Itâs what we all want.â
âThen whatâs the issue?â
âYouâre doing too much, and it will not only backfire for you but also for Christian,â Franco explained.
âIt was the same thing which happened to my eldest sonâs first wife, and since youâre so eager to hear that story, Iâll tell you all about it!â
âOkay,â I smirked. Franco was finally where I wanted him to be. The next step would be the warehouse.
âHer nickname was Stasia, and she was just like you.â He started.
âStrong-minded, beautiful, and clumsy with a dangerous look in her eyes and a really big mouth. Itâs the same look you have nowadays.â
His words sounded just like Cescaâs, and I still hadnât figured out what she meant by that. âYour look is telling us that youâre out to lead Christian down the wrong path, and I wonât let you do that.â
Something in Francoâs expression had changed, but and he was willing to talk, but what I really wanted to know was why he was so obsessed with that warehouse. âIâve experienced how she changed from a sweet obeying girl to a rebel.â
âIâm not like her,â I told him. I wasnât out to destroy this family, and I didnât want to boss Christian around either. All I wanted was to be more involved and to know where exactly I got myself into.
âDo you want to know what she did?â Franco started. âShe convinced my son to bail on this family, and that idiot almost did it.â He explained. âI was willing to give him everything, but he stole our money and was planning to run away with it. All of it!â
âIf I hadnât caught him!â
âIâm not like that-Iâm an Alfonzo.â I made clear. Christianâs money was the last thing I was after. I was desperate, but not that desperate.
âChristian threatened to leave this family multiple times because of you, he sold his daughterâs hotel. without discussing it with us because of you, he wants to change the entire family business because of you, he became soft and cries every day because of you-â
âIâm not like that woman. I didnât force him to do anything!â I yelled at Franco. âIâm sorry for what all of have been through, but Iâm not like that.â
you âYouâre sorry for what weâve been through?â Franco fumed. âI did not only have to take away his position, but I also had to threaten my son to choose between his pregnant wife and his family.â
âAnd he chose the family,â I concluded. It made a lot of sense why Franco was so determined to force Christian to fight for Siena. It was because he felt guilty for his actions. âWhat happened to the child?â
I was curious about Francoâs opinion on Dario and wanted to know how he felt about him. âI donât know. No one knows.â Franco stated. âAt the end, my son ended up with a wife he didnât want and a grudge against the family-â
âAnd it was all because of her?â I wondered. âThatâs why you wanted Christian to hate me-so he wouldnât resent this family?â
For the first time, Franco didnât have anything to say and looked down, defeated. I was even starting to feel sorry for him. âI just wanted him to have both. I wanted him to have the family business and the baby-I didnât want him to end up like his uncle.â
âAnd he wonât,â I promised and moved closer to hold his hand. All I could see was a broken grandfather who didnât want to make the same mistake. âIâm trying to make this work, and I know you donât want to lose Christian after losing Lucio, but Iâm not like that. You have my word.â
Franco finally looked into my eyes and gave me a nod. âI hope youâre right, Serena. Because Christian is this familyâs last hope.â He sighed.
âGio is to demanding and not capable of running a business, Enzo is extremely unstable, and Iâm not even getting started on all my other children and grandchildren,â Franco spoke. âTheyâre not meant to be leaders like Christian.â
Christianâs aunts, uncles and cousins were way worse than Gio, so I definitely understood where he was coming from.
âEverything I do is not because I hate you, but because I need Christian. I failed my eldest son, I missed. one of my grandchildren, my other son is dying, I donât have many years left myselfââ
âYou can trust me,â I told Franco and looked at him with a truthful look in my eyes. How would he react if I told him that his son was still alive? Or that all Dario wanted was a family?
I was hoping for this to be the part where I would finally get a breakthrough and get the answer to my question. I had to win the bet.
âIf you want me to stay in the background, Iâll stay in the background.â I lied straight to his face, but Franco seemed to believe me.
âI mightâve mistreated you, but donât disappoint me, Serena,â Franco warned me. âI can see you love Christian, so Iâm giving you the benefit of the doubt, and Iâm begging you not to pull him away from his family.â
âFine.â I promised Franco. I had no intentions to pull him away from the Lambertiâs. I just wanted to be helpful. but I was even failing at that. I still did not get a single word about the Lamberti warehouse. The only thing which came to my advantage was that Dario was a closed book and wouldnât open up to Christian. There was no way I would lose this bet.
âSo, what happened after you caught your son?â I asked Franco.
âI took back the money, and I hid it where no one can find it.â Franco chuckled. âThat money caused a lot of issues in the past, so Iâm guarding it until the day I die.â
âIâm guarding it for Siena, and one day it will all be hers. Not even Christian knows where it is.â
Franco stated. âYes, he told me something like that a long time ago,â I remembered. He used to talk about the Lambertiâs love for Siena all the time.
âWhat amount are we talking about?â I wondered. Berto pulled many strings to get to that money, got disowned and even faked his own death, so it sounded extremely serious. Would it be 10 million? Or maybe 100 million?
Franco motioned for me to move closer while I followed his instructions. âI guess itâs okay for you to know since youâre Sienaâs mother,â Franco whispered.
âWeâre talking about nine zeros.â
Billions?
âWhat did your son want with it?â I asked, surprised. Unlike Christianâs expectations, Franco had no issue opening up to me. âHis first wife told him that he had all the rights to the money and that it belonged to him. He wanted to cut us off and continue the Lamberti business on his own.â Franco explained.
It was all starting to become very clear to me. Berto Lamberti was after the money his wife fought for and was planning to build his own empire with it.
The reason why he wanted to know about the warehouse was because he mustâve found out where the money was.
The money was at the Lamberti warehouse and he would do anything to get to it.
None of us were safe.
