Chapter 163
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
âI feel like youâve officially lost your mind, Christian.â Beau chuckled. âI donât know what kind of thing youâre planning, but Iâm kindly requesting you to keep my sisters and me out of it.â
âI thought the idea was to scare him away, not to anger him even more. Carmen agreed. âOh my god, weâll all end up dead.â Carmen freaked out while she bumped her head against Beauâs shoulder.
âShouldnât we stop him?â Christian spoke. Beau was confused by his words but was in no mood to argue with him. It didnât take him long to figure out that Christian would do whatever Christian wanted to do.
âWhatever you want, Christian. Iâll stay here and watch my sister while you talk to Dario.â Beau told him. Carmen gave him an offended look and smacked his shoulder.
âHey, why do I have to miss out on the fun?â Carmen pouted. âI thought you guys were bringing me along on a special mission.â
âYes, a special mission to keep your mouth shut.â Beau rolled his eyes. Christian had enough of the two bickerings back and forth and nudged Carmen. âIâll be back soon, okay?â He smiled at her. âIn the meantime, please be nice to your brother.â
âYes.â Carmen nodded with a blush on her face. âIâll stay here. Take all the time you need.â
âUnbelievable,â Beau muttered while Christian removed himself from the two as fast as possible and made his way towards the motel room.
Christian looked down at the small envelope in his hands and placed it inside of his jacket. It was an invitation to his dadâs family photoshoot. It was something he owed Dario, and if all went well, Dario did not have to live in a lie anymore.
âChristian.â Dario greeted him as soon as he opened the door. âCousin,â Christian spoke back with a forced. smile on his face. Regardless of his feelings, this was not the time to treat him like his enemy.
âSo, weâre cousins now?â Dario scoffed. âI have a name. Please use it.â
âI thought we were on the same side now, but fine, Dario.â Christian shrugged as he walked in.
âWhere is your uncle?â
âOut.â Dario snarled. âHeâs known to make the best of every situation and used this time to look at some flowers. Can you believe that?â
Christian chuckled at the thought of Mauro taking this time to take back to his own life, but it didnât take long before he thought of something else. âHe should stay inside. We donât know what your dad is planning-
âHe wonât hurt me,â Dario spoke. âIâm the last memory he has of my mom. He wonât hurt me-even if I betrayed him.â
âWell, there are other ways to hurt you,â Christian muttered. âAnyway, I didnât come here for that. I came here because I want to talk to you about your dad.â
Dario lowered his head and turned away so he did not have to face Christian. âI need you to tell me everything, how he came back, why he came back-and what heâs planning to do to us.â
âDonât.â Dario sighed. âI helped you free your brother because I didnât want anyone to get hurt and because Serena asked me to, but here is where it ends. I donât want to end up like my brother.
Luckâ
âLuca is doing fine.â Christian sighed. âJohnny and Marc are watching him the same way your dad watched Enzo and Gina.â
Bonus âI didnât want to do that.â Dario clarified. Christian could see the regret behind his eyes and could tell he was telling the truth.
âI can clearly see that,â Christian spoke, irritated. âBut are you really going to beg for his forgiveness and go back to him while you know heâs a bad person?â
Christian walked closer and held Darioâs wrist. âLet go of me,â Dario warned him. âYou have a lot of nerve touching me for someone who got handed this position without having to do anything. The position which belongs to me.â
âThatâs not true.â Christian defended himself. âI donât know what my uncle told you, but thatâs not true. You donât know the things I had to sacrifice in order to be here.â
Christian thought back at the normal childhood he missed out on and all the friends who feared him because their parents told them not to hang out with him. He had to hold himself back from telling Dario the awful truth. He had to hold himself back from telling Dario that he did not have an easy life. Not even close.
âListen, I know youâre not a bad person, and I know that because Serena told me. I know you know right from wrong, but please know that whatever your dad is planning on doing will hurt both of us.â
Christian told him.
Dario freed himself from Christianâs grip and pushed him off. âWhatever he promised you canât happen. but itâs not too late to make the right decision!â Christian tried his hardest to get through to him. âHelp me stop your dad and-â
âHe is the only person I have. You know, itâs so easy for you to talk about these things when you everything!â Dario yelled out.
have âEverything?â Christian frowned. âYou think I have everything?â
âIâm just going to ignore you pretending like my dad, who is also your uncle, isnât dying at this very moment.â Christian brushed him off. âBut long story short, I donât have everything. You have no idea.â
âDo you want the family business?â Christian asked. âBecause I donât care, you can have it-all I want is for Berto to leave my family alone!â
âMy dad is on the verge of dying. I actually donât have time for this!â He spoke, irritated. Getting through to Dario seemed a bit more complicated than he initially thought, and he could no understand how Serena managed to do it.
âYouâll give it just like that?â Dario chuckled. âDo you hear yourself?â
Christianâs words were no lies. He thought it wouldâve been nice to hand it down to Siena, but he wouldnât put her life in danger for it to happen. âIâll help you get the respect youâre seeking.â
âHelp me get respect?â Dario scoffed.
âYes,â Christian replied. âHow do you think I got here? Itâs not because of my dad. Itâs because I gave up a lot to earn everyoneâs respect.â
âDonât lie!â Dario stopped him from talking. âYouâre here because you have a family behind you I never got the chance to be part of that family.â
âBecause of your mom,â Christian stated. âNot because of our grandpa, but because of your mom.â
âShe probably had nothing good to say about the Lambertiâs, but from what Iâve heard, she wasnât exactly an angel either.â Christian reminded him. It took Dario some strength not to attack Christian for his harsh words about his mother.
âListen to your cousin, Dario,â Mauro spoke as he entered the door. Christian and Dario turned around and looked at the flowers in his hands. âYour dad has been pulling strings for way too long, and I loved my sister-but heâs right,â Mauro admitted.
âMy sister used your father as a puppet, she was after his fortune, and the Lambertiâs did whatever was necessary to stop her-donât follow into her footsteps.â
âUncle!â Dario called out in disbelief. âNo, Dario-you listen to me!â Mauro spoke.
âThat man has been controlling us for way too long, and look where weâre at?â
âWasnât it just good when it was just the two of us?â
Dario felt sorry towards his uncle and wished for nothing more to give him a happy life. He felt terrible for dragging his uncle into this, but he had no choice. âWhat about momâs dream?â Dario wondered as he thought back to his motherâs last words.
Take back what was supposed to be yours and punish them for your fatherâs death.
âYou promised her to get revenge for your fatherâs death, and he turned out to be alive, so all of that is not necessary anymore!â Mauro lost his patience. âYour dad is taking it too far, and I canât take this anymore, so please!â He pleaded.
âGive Christian what he needs and letâs leave, just the two of us-you know just as good how much your dad has changed.â
âChanged how?â Christian wondered. He could sense there was no way to get through Dario himself, but maybe his uncle could. Mauro walked towards Dario and placed his hand on his shoulder.
âItâs not about giving you what you deserve anymore. He made it all about himself and has been hurting. many others in the process-you know that.â
âUncle Mauro.â Dario sighed. âDonât make this hard for me.â
âYouâre making it hard for yourself. Your cousin came here in peace. Listen to him.â
âUncle,â Dario muttered. He took a deep breath and looked from Christian to Mauro. Initially, he had no plans to betray his dad, but his uncle had a good point. Berto Lamberti had changed, and his intentions. were not the same anymore. All Dario wanted was to matter to the Lambertiâs. He never wanted anyone to get hurt.
âListen, you donât want to hurt your dad, and I donât want to hurt my uncle. We want the same thing.â
Christian spoke. âAnd Iâm sorry for what I did to you all those years ago. I was immature, stupid-
selfish, but I wonât make the same mistake anymore.â
âWhat do you mean?â Dario asked, confused. âIt means Iâll help you get the respect you deserve. All you have to do is tell me what heâs up to so we can stop him together.â
âDario, listen to him.â Mauro jumped in. Christian prepared himself to feel weak after apologizing, bur that was not the case. He genuinely felt bad for him and could see that Dario had no one else to turn to All he relied on were Berto false promises.
âAnd if I do help you, how do I know you wonât hurt my dad?â Dario asked. âI canât lose him too.â
Christian finally had the feeling Dario was slowly coming around and did not want to ruin this opportunity.
âDario, i havenât even told anyone about him and Iâm keeping this smaller than this has to be-
because I have no desire to get rid of my uncle, but Iâll do whatever necessary to defend my family,â
Christian told him.
âI know you care about Serena, and so do I, and I know he told you he wouldnât hurt her, but he hurt his own nephew. Do you really think he cares about her?â
Dario thought about Serena and just the thought of her getting hurt was enough for him to reconsider his decision.
âIâll help you and tell you everything I know,â Dario spoke as he took a deep breath. If there was one thing he didnât want, it was for Serena to get hurt. âJust promise me one thing.â
âAnything!â Christian spoke, surprised. âTell me what you want.â
âI need you to promise me that youâll protect my uncle.â Dario requested. âDonât worry about me,â
Mauro. chuckled, but Dario shook his head.
âDonât listen to him. I need you to protect him, Iâm willing to help you and Iâm willing to tell you everything, but all of you have no idea who youâre dealing with.â Dario explained. âHe wonât just sit back and do nothing if he finds out about this.â
âDeal.â Christian spoke. âIâll make sure your uncle gets all the protection he needs. All you have to do is tell me everything you know.â
Dario let out a relieved breath and pulled out a chair. âIn that case, you better make yourself comfortable.â He told Christian.
âBecause thereâs a lot we have to discuss.â
âIt all started several years ago.â Dario started. âAfter my momâs funeral, I saw this man with this mask stalking me, and I told my uncle about it.â
âTurns out that man was my dad.â He continued. Christian observed the slight smile on his face and figured Dario mustâve been happy to see his dad was still alive.
âHe told me he had been hiding out because his own father tried to kill him-â
âThatâs not true,â Christian spoke. âWhatever he told you is not true, our grandpa is a lot of things, but he would never kill his own son. Do you know how much he cried for your dad?â
âMaybe you should let me finish,â Dario scoffed. Christian listened to Dario and kept his mouth shut to listen to the rest of the story. âHe told me that there was an explosion and that he gave his life to safe Lucio, but no one returned for him-â
âBecause my dad was the heir to the family business, and he was close to dying.â Christian spoke.
âHe chose to save his brother. That was his own decision.â
âIâve heard otherwise.â Dario doubted his words. âMy dad told me that your grandpa left him there on purpose-he told me that he looked him in the eye while he reached out for his hand and walked away Christian got light-headed as flashbacks about Vince went through his head. Christian had a good reason for deciding to save his brother instead, so he was pretty sure his grandfather also had a good reason. Especially after seeing what kind of person his uncle turned out to be.
âDario, tell him everything.â Mauro invited himself into the conversation. âYou have to tell him.
everything.â
Dario took a deep breath and looked into Christianâs eyes as he slowly took in his uncleâs words. If he was going to be on Christianâs side, he had to tell him everything. âMy momâ¦convinced him to âborrowâ money from the family, but your grandpa found out and made him choose between her and the familyâ¦he chose the family.â
âYes, and he lost his position and got forced into an arranged marriage-1 know that.â Christian shrugged. âThatâs old news.â
âNo, thatâs not it.â Dario sighed. âThereâs much more to the story.â
âHe persuaded me to follow his orders and made us the face of the Orlandoâs,â Dario explained.
âBut everything belongs to him, including all of the men. I was just the face, and thatâs it-â
âHow did he get them to follow his orders?â Christian questioned. He knew his uncle mustâve meant business if the man could control people from afar behind a mask.
âI already told you, heâs not a match for you.â Dario sighed. âDo you know how many minutes it took for him to recruit Luca?â
âOne,â Dario spoke. âIt took one minute, and heâs not the only one who is jumping at an opportunity to betray you.â
âYes, I know,â Christian chuckled. âFortunately, Johnny is not like Luca, and he would never ever betray me, but uncle Berto knew that, so he never involved him in any plans. Right?â He asked as Dario nodded
