Chapter 164
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
his head as confirmation.
âBut thanks for reminding me. Iâll keep it in mind.â
âHe followed all of you around for several years and was looking for multiple ways to distract all of you,â Dario spoke. âWhen youâ¦betrayed Serena-it felt like everything had fallen into place.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âProvoking Serena, stirring issues between the Lambertiâs and Alfonzoâs.â Dario sighed. âIt was all part of the plan, and my dad planned on recruiting the Alfonzoâs, so they could get to the money.â
âBut everything fell apart when Serena and I got back together.â Christian realized. âHe was back to square one and kidnapped Gina and Enzo instead?â
âYes,â Dario confirmed. âHe wanted to trap you, and he tried to get information out of them. So he took the two people who had reasons to hate youâ
âBut the only thing was that they didnât hate me and remained loyal to me.â Christian finished. A lot had happened, but he would never doubt his brother or Gina. Enzo was still his brother, and Gina knew the danger of running her mouth too much.
âWhat did he want?â Christian asked. âWhy is he so obsessed with the Lamberti warehouse?â
âI-I donât know.â Dario lied, but Christian wasnât buying it. âDario!â Mauro called out while Dario flinched âMoney.â Dario sighed. âHe told me he has money, lots of it.â
âItâs enough to buy anyoneâs loyalty. He wants to build an army and remove you as the boss.â
âNot again.â Christian sighed, exhausted. It hadnât even been a while since Fabio tried to stir issues.
All he wanted was to take care of Serena and Siena in peace.
âHow much money?â Christian wondered. âAnd how did he get that money?â
âThat much I really donât know,â Dario spoke. Christian looked at his uncle, Mauro, who backed up his words and gave Christian a nod.
Christian thought about Serena and wondered if she was able to push his grandpa as far. He knew Franco was known to be a closed book, but he never doubted Serena. She was, after all, the first person he opened. up to because she left him no choice. If everything went according to plan, Serena mustâve known what kind of money he was talking about.
âOkay,â Christian spoke. âThat wasnât that hard, now was it?â
his âWhatâs your plan?â Dario carefully asked. He knew the true extent of his fatherâs powers and didnât want Serena to get hurt. Dario only realized just how serious it was after he requested Christian to protect uncle. Berto had a habit of coming for the things someone loved most, and Christian and Dario both loved Serena.
âI want him to reveal himself,â Christian spoke. âI want to push him so far that he has no choice but to reveal himself.â
âAre you insane?â Dario questioned. It was the same reaction as Beau. Dario knew all too well that his dad was not the one to mess with.
âYes,â Christian stated. âIâm insane, and I want him to step out and identify himself. I canât go against a man who wonât even show his face-
âThatâs because he canât,â Dario spoke in fear. âHis faceâ¦he is not the same anymore.â
âThatâs for me to decide.â Christian shrugged. âIâll rip that mask right from his face. I donât care-so please tell me what I have to do to make him reveal himself.â
Darioâs jaw almost dropped to the floor as he stared at Christian, who seemed fearless. Dario was convinced Christian truly had no idea who he was dealing with. âThis is not Fabio Garcia. You donât want to get this man out of his cave.â Dario explained. âOnce heâs out, itâs over. Heâs not the same warm uncle you once knew.â
âAnd Iâm not the same little immature boy he once knew,â Christian spoke, determined. He wasnât going to let anyone mess with the family, not even his uncle.
âWell.â Dario frowned. âI think you should rethink your decision, but if you want him to reveal himself- just keep doing what youâre doing, and heâll come to you himself.â
âWhat do you mean?â Christian wondered. âHe depended on Luca and me-and now both of us are gone.â Dario spoke. âKeep doing what youâre doing and heâll reveal himself.
Christian couldnât help but smile at the idea of his uncle falling right into his trap. âChristian, donât underestimate him.â Dario reminded him. âHeâs mentally one of the strongest people Iâve ever known. while youâre known to beâ¦â
âA mess?â Christian chuckled. âIâm known to be a mess ever since I got with Serena. Thatâs why uncle Berto doesnât see me as a threat, right?â
âRight.â Dario sighed. Christian was well aware of everyoneâs opinions about him, but he didnât care.
He loved Serena for making him human, and he didnât care how soft she made him.
âI want to thank you for protecting Serena.â Christian smiled while Dario had a surprised look on his face. âI know you kept her by your side because you didnât want her to be your dadâs enemy.â
Christian words were sincere. Whether Dario was in love with her or not, he would forever be grateful for the way he protected her. Christian knew it was his love for Serena which had eventually pushed him into making the right decision. He was supposed to be angry and jealous, but he couldnât. He was grateful and admired his gesture.
âWas this all you had to tell me?â Christian asked after he obtained all information necessary. âYes,â
Dario spoke. âHe obviously isnât at the Orlando mansion anymore, soââ
âDo you know why he hates me?â Christian asked. The same man who used to call him his favorite nephew held a grudge against him, and he didnât know why. At first, he was happy to learn that his uncle was still alive and had expected to welcome him back with open arms, but that was not the case.
âYou have everything he couldnât.â Dario chuckled. âYou have the business, the girl, your baby-your grandpaâs loves youâ¦â
Î âHow about dad?â Christian wondered. âHow does he feel about my dad?â
Christian looked as the dull expression on Darioâs face slowly began to change into a smile. âHe didnât have a bad word to say about him,â Dario spoke. âHe had something bad to say about everyone, but not him.â
Christian sighed, relieved. He could live with his uncle hating him, but he could not live with the idea of his uncle hating his dad.
âThanks for everything, Dario.â Christian smiled. âI really appreciate your help, and I promise you that Iâll try to end it the good way. I donât want anyone else to get hurt.â
âAnd I also donât want Serena to give me a speech about how Iâm not god,â Christian muttered under his breath, making Dario laugh out loud. âI also got that speech,â Dario remembered. âJust make sure to keep your promise.â
Christian looked at Mauroâs face and could sense that Dario still hadnât shared everything. Why would he? Christian thought. He placed his hand on Darioâs shoulder while Dario looked at him in surprise.
âIâm sorry,â Christian spoke. Darioâs eyes widened, and so did Mauroâs.
âIâm sorry for what happened to you all those years ago at your dadâs partyâ Christian apologized from his heart. âNo one deserved to be treated like that, and if I had known you were my cousin, I wouldnât have turned my back on you.â Christian shared. âItâs just that I was a cold person around that time because I was afraid of people pushing me away-and I didnât want to lose the only people I had by saving you.â
âIt was wrong, and Iâm sorry. I want you to know that everyone has changed as well, and weâre not immature anymore.â Christian spoke as he pulled out an envelope.
âWhat is this?â Dario asked, surprised. âA way to fix everything.â Christian smiled. âMy dad is nearing his end, he organized a family shoot, and I would like for you to be there.â
âW-what?â Dario stuttered as his hands moved towards the invitation.
âIâll tell my family about you, so you can see for yourself that theyâre not as bad as you claim them to be,â Christian spoke. âMy dad met you as an Orlando, but Iâm sure he would love to meet you as a Lamberti.â
âWhy?â Dario whispered. âWhy would you do this?â
âBecause youâre family,â Christian spoke loud and clear. âListen to his words, Dario,â Mauro said.
âI know what it feels like to be alone, and I donât want you to turn out like my uncle,â Christian spoke.
â1 was headed down that path, but then I met Serena, and she showed me a way to be happy.â
âShe made me realize that Iâm the one who chose to be bitter. Dario, Iâm sure the Lambertiâs would love to meet you-including our grandpa.â Christian told him. âYes, heâs a bit grumpy-but heâs still our grandpa, and I donât know what uncle Berto said about him, but heâs a good man.â
âWhy?â Dario repeated. âWhy would you even do this?â
âBecause youâre my cousin,â Christian explained. âYouâre my family, which means I care for your well- being, and I donât want you to be alone.â
âW-what?â Dario spoke, confused. âI thought you hated me.â
âHate?â Christian chuckled. âI donât hate you. Youâre my cousin.â He repeated. âI donât even hate Luca.â
âSo if I accept this invitation, youâll properly make me part of this family?â Dario asked.
âYes.â Christian nodded. âItâs a good way for you to start over and a good way to push your uncle to show himself.â
âIâll give you time to think about it, but please tell me if youâre in-so I can give my dad a heads up.â
Christian chuckled. âI donât want him to drop dead next week.â
âThank you.â Dario smiled, surprised. âIâll think about it.â
+15 Bonus Christian turned around to leave but got interrupted by the sound of Darioâs voice. âWait!â Dario called out.
âYes?â Christian frowned as he turned his head. He was hoping for Dario to share whatever he held back.
âLucio takes a walk in the garden every day around twelve, and I noticed my dad used to leave every day around eleven-thirty,â Dario spoke. âI donât know if you can do anything with that information, but Iâm pretty sure you can find my dad around the Lamberti estate around that time.â
Christian was shocked by Darioâs words and felt terrified at the idea of Berto getting too close to Lucio. He figured Berto probably wanted to see his dying younger brother and made a schedule so he could at least take a look at him.
âDonât do anything stupid. I just told you in case you wanted to see him-butâ¦donât approach him.â
Dario warned Christian. âYou donât know who youâre dealing with.â
You donât know who youâre dealing with.
Christian didnât know how many times he heard that sentence, but the message came through.
âThanks.â He spoke one last time and turned around to leave. âThink about my offer, and Iâll hear from you.â
Christian walked back to the car with only two thoughts going through his head. The first one was about Serena and if she succeeded in finding out more about the warehouse, and the second one was about his uncle.
He was willing to take Darioâs advice and wouldnât approach him, but that didnât mean that he couldnât take a look at him.
âItâs freezing outside. You shouldnât dress my baby like this!â
Those were the first words that came out of Christianâs mouth as he stepped out of the car and m way towards us.
It appeared we planned it perfectly and came home around the same time. âStop overreacting. Sh I told him, but my attention moved to Carmen, who also stepped out of the car. I handed Siena ove Christian and stared at Carmen.
âYou took her with you?â I whispered. âWhy, shouldnât I?â Christian asked.
+15 Bonus I looked at the bright smile on Carmenâs face and shook my head. A few months ago I wouldâve never predicted to see that smile. âNo, I donât mind.â I smiled. Carmen ran over to Siena and kissed her cheeks. âI missed you so much. Next time Iâm coming with you, Siena!â Carmen cooed.
âWhere is Beau?â I wondered after noticing he wasnât there. âHe went back home to take care of Isobel,â Christian explained. âShe called and threw a fit about how he doesnât love her and how sheâs going to kill him once he gets home. Very scary.â
Carmen grabbed Siena from Christianâs hands and carried her inside.
âWere you able to find out more?â Christian whispered while we followed Carmen. âI did. How did it go with Dario?â I asked. It wouldâve been so much easier if the two of them got along.
âGreat.â Christian chuckled. âYouâll never believe what happened, but long story short-we decided to end our feud.â
âWhat?â I frowned, confused. It was so unlike Christian to make up with anyone, and also, Dario didnât seem like the person to let go of a grudge. âIâll tell you about it. Thereâs a lot I have to tell.â
âA lot?â I asked, surprised and wondered if 1 had lost the bet. âCarmen!â Christian called out. âCan you watch Siena for me?â
âYes, sure!â Carmen yelled back. Christian gave me a satisfied smile and wrapped his arm around my waist. âIâm happy to have her here, sheâs so helpful, and unlike you, she listens!â
âHey!â I rolled my eyes and pushed him off as we made our way upstairs. I stopped walking and moved my eyes to the guard who stood in front of the stairs which lead to the other floor. âAre you coming?â Christian spoke as he pulled my arm.
âWhat are they doing here?â I wondered. âThey werenât here this morning.â
âOh, that.â Christian sighed while I gave him a daring look. âNo more lies, remember.â I reminded him. I knew they were probably there because Christian mightâve feared I wouldâve bothered Gina at one point, and he was absolutely correct.
One wrong word and I would kill her.
âNothing, letâs go.â Christian chuckled and rushed me to our room. He closed the door behind us and pushed me against the wall before he rested his hand beside me. âIs there an issue?â He smirked.
It was like he was asking me to pick a fight with him, and I hated whenever he got like this, but I wouldnât be giving him the satisfaction-not when we had other stuff to worry about. âNo, of course not, Christian,â I smirked back.
