Chapter 168
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
We arrived back home without zero information or knowledge abht how to get to the money, and even though Christian appeared to be in a good mood, he also seemed stressed out about it.
âIf your grandpa gave someone the order, we can just find out and ask the person if they know anything âHeâs dead, Serena.â Christian dropped the news. âMy grandpaâs right hand is dead, and heâs been dead for over ten years now.â
âOh.â I spoke, flustered at the unexpected question. âHow about we buy an ouija board and talk to him?â I suggested and attempted to cheer him up. It seemed to have worked because Christian was able to laugh. at my joke. âYouâre so stupid sometimes.â He mocked me. âItâs never too late to go back to school.â
âHey!â I yelled at him. âDonât you think calling me stupid is a bit too much?â
âYes, Iâm sorry about that.â Christian apologized. âBut what else do you expect me to say when youâre telling me to use an ouija board?â
âYouâre really no fun,â I huffed as I thought of more ways to get to the money. âHow about we tell your grandpa about it?â
âNo!â Christian opposed without giving it a second thought. âListen, if Iâll tell him my uncle is still alive. the entire family will fall apart, and I want to prevent that for now-so unless my uncle somehow decides. to reveal himself. Iâm not going to do that.â He explained. âBesides that, I think my uncle and I both agree to let my dad rest in peace.
âRight.â I agreed. âPlease help me because Iâm not following you anymore. Do you want him to reveal himself or not?â
âI do.â Christian sighed. âBut not to everyone, just to me.â
âI see. Weâll find a way. We always do.â I reassured Christian while I stared into his eyes. I couldnât stop thinking about how he introduced me to everyone. He called me his wife, and he didnât even let out a single stutter.
âWhy did you introduce me to everyone as your wife?â I finally addressed the situation. âBecause you donât look like my fiancée, you look my wife.â Christian chuckled. âWeâre going to get married anyway, so whatâs the big deal?â
I couldnât help but smile at his confidence and noticed that something was different about him. He wasnât hiding me anymore, but he bragged about me and even went as far as calling me his wife. âI appreciate it, but donât you want to get married?â I asked. âLike, officially married.â
âOfficially married?â Christian forced a smile. âIf you want to do that, then weâll do that.â
I observed the fake smile on his lips and wondered what the issue was. âIs it because your dad wonât be there?â I asked. Christian sighed and shrugged his shoulders. âI wanted to get married while he was still here, but I screwed things up.â
âOh.â I awkwardly spoke. Maybe I shouldâve just let it rest instead of creating this awkward situation.
Yes, he screwed things up-but he didnât need a reminder of that every single second.
âAnd whatâs up with Dario?â I changed the subject. âHis dad mustâve already called him by now. You should check up on him because we donât want him to change his mind.â I advised Christian. âAnd did he âI donât know, isnât he your friend?â Christian frowned. He didnât seg jealous or irritated but somewhat afraid. âHeâs your cousin, soâ¦â I mumbled. I thought about giving Dario a call, but I figured it wouldâve been for the best to give it a rest as also he had gone through a lot. âHow about you give him a call?â
âM-me?â Christian spoke, surprised. âWhy should I call him?â
âBecause heâs your cousin?â I giggled. He seemed genuinely confused and scared, which was something I hadnât seen that often. âI donât think he wants to come to the photo shoot,â Christian sulked. âI was just worried about him,â I explained.
âLetâs call him now,â Christian suggested and grabbed his phone before I could say another word.
âN- now?â I stuttered, surprised. âYes,â Christian spoke. âYouâre obviously worried about him, and as crazy as it may sound, so am 1.â
I smiled at Christianâs understanding gesture and reached out to hold his hand. âThank you.â
The phone went off, and we patiently waited for Dario to pick up the phone. âDo you think heâll pick up?â Christian asked with a startled look on his face. âMaybe I pushed him too much?â, He was so insecure and probably thought his cousin didnât want anything to do with him.
âHello?â Dario answered. Christian threw the phone to me while I passed it back to him and mouthed for him to speak. âI-itâs me, Christian.â He almost gulped while I laughed at him. I decided to save him out of his misery and grabbed the phone from his hands.
âAnd Serena!â I called out. âSerena?â Dario spoke, surprised. âI was just about to call you!â
âYou were?â Christian and I spoke at the same time. Forget about Christian not being jealous. He seemed pissed. âI meanâ¦.the both of you,â Dario said while Christian gave me a look.
âMy dad called, and I didnât know whether to call you or Serena but, yes.â Dario sighed. âHe called.â
âWhat for?â Christian asked. âHe told me to come back. He told me that he took it too far this time and that he wants to start over-â
âDonât believe him,â Christian spoke. âWhatever you do, donât trust him and stay where you are.â
âYes, I know,â Dario spoke to our surprise. âI called to warn you because he sounds incredibly unstable. God knows what heâll do to me if I go back there.â
âAnd Luca?â Christian continued. âDid he ask something about Luca?â
It was quiet for a few seconds before Dario let out a deep breath. âI managed to calm down the situation, but once my dad knotes Iâm on your side, heâll come back for him.â Dario mentioned.
âChristian, I think itâs time to give him Luca.â He spoke, but by the look on Christianâs face, I could tell that it was not going to happen. âNo,â Christian replied. âIâm keeping Luca.â
âVery well then. Iâm not going to argue with you.â Dario sighed. âI actually called to tell you that Iâve been thinking about your offer, and I want to do it.â He spoke. âI want to meet your dad and be part of the familyâ¦and Iâll come to the photo shoot.â
Christian gave me a shocked look before he stared at the phone. âI meanâ¦if the invitation still stands, of course.â Dario nervously spoke.
âYes, of course, it does!â I spoke for Christian and gave him a nudge. 977 Christian answered.
âYouâre welcome anytime. I mean, are you sure?â
âYes,â Dario spoke, determined. âIâm ready to meet your family.â
âThatâs great.â Christian smiled. âIâll go over to him tomorrow, and Iâll tell him about you. How does that sound?â
âGood,â Dario replied. âBut what are you going to say about my dad?â Dario wondered. I looked at Christian and waited for his answer as I was wondering the same thing.
âJust that youâre Bertoâs son, thatâs it,â Christian spoke. âI donât want anyone to know too much and I want your dad to reveal himself to me and only me-just worry about meeting the family.â
âWhat about your dad?â Dario asked. âIsnât this going to be too much for him?â
Christian took a deep breath. âMy dad is dying, meeting you would be like a gift to him.â
It was quiet on both sides, and I looked at Christian with a sympathetic look on my face. I knew Lucio would be happy to accept Dario and so would Franco, but the reality seemed so harsh.
Anyway, Iâll tell him the news tomorrow and get back to you if thatâs okay,â Christian confirmed again.
âThatâs fine, thatâs perfect,â Dario spoke. âI should really go now, but I would like to thank you for everything.â
Christian looked up and frowned his eyebrows while I whispered for him to thank him back. âY-yes, you too.â Christian spoke before he hung up the phone.
âWhat was that?â He asked me, shocked, while I cracked a laugh. He seemed so confused and weirded out by having a friendly conversation with Dario. âYouâll come with me tomorrow, right?â
Christian asked.
âI wouldnât want to miss it!â I smiled. Telling his dad and grandpa about Dario would no be easy, but I wouldnât want to miss it. We got interrupted by the sound of Enzoâs loud voice and turned around to loo at him.
âChristian!â Enzo greeted before he attacked him in a hug. Christian pulled a disgusted face and pushed Enzo off while I giggled at their cute moment.
âWhatâs wrong with you?â Christian asked while Enzo forced himself to kiss him on the cheek. âItâs a goo day today, brother,â Enzo spoke. âMom and dad forgave me, grandpa told me he missed me-
and life is just going well.â
âDespite your black eye.â Christian scoffed. I could see through him and noticed how happy he was to h the news, but so was I. At least one thing was working out.
âHi, Serena-hi, Christian!â Carmen greeted him while she ran in with Siena in her hands. âLook at her She looks just like a bobblehead!â Christian laughed. He grabbed Siena from Carmenâs hands and leane her head against his chest.
âSiena had a good time with grandpa today!â Carmen informed us. âBoth grandpas, we had a great tim you guys should come next time.â
Christian gave Carmen a warm smile and a wink before he shifted his eyes to Enzo. âWas my brother 1 to you?â
âY-yes.â Carmen stammered with a slight blush on her face. Enzo slammed his arm around Carmenâs shoulder and nodded his head. âOf course, I took care of her. When have I not taken care of any of my sisters?â
âA lot of timesâ Christian chuckled âJust make sure you donât get her bad side because that means I get on Serenaâs bad side, and I donât want that âThe same way Serena is getting on Sienaâs bad side? Enzo laughed She abandoned poor Siena to spend her day with you and play mob wife, so I donât think we should listen to her opinionâ
Christian was close to attacking Enzo, but I gave him a look begging him not to do anything as I took in his brotherâs words. Did I really abandoned my daughter, or was it just Enzo being Enzo âDonât worry. He was really nice!â Carmen luckily changed the subject after seeing the look on my face Enzo, who did not seem to notice the impact of his words, told us another story while I was focused on the disgusting smell of Sienaâs diaper. âI think we need to change her diaper,â I spoke to Christian.
1 reached to grab Siena from his hands, but he turned away instead. âTH do it.â He smiled. âIâm not ready to hand her over yet, so Iâll do it.â
âOh, okay,â I spoke, startled. âI can also do it, no problem!â I told him. Enzoâs words hurt me and I felt the need to prove myself. I also missed Siena and didnât want to let go of her, even if it meant changing her diaper. âNo, you rest-and Iâll take care of it,â Christian spoke again, but I shook my head and stuck out my hands to grab the baby.
âHow about you go rest, and Iâll do it?â I forced a smile onto my face, but Christian took a step back and shook his head. âHow about you guys go together?â Enzo laughed out loud.
âI canât believe you guys are discussing who is going to change Sienaâs diaper.â
Christian and I looked at each other with embarrassed looks on our faces. It was only day one of tagging along with Christian, and I finally knew how he felt. I felt terrible for leaving Siena alone and wanted to for that time, just to make myself believe that I wasnât a bad mother.
make up âCome on,â Christian spoke as I followed him to the stairs. âSo this is how you feel?â I asked. âYes,â
Christian replied. âItâs not that I never wanted you by my side, but this job isnât easy.â
We entered Sienaâs room, and I stood back while Christian changed her diaper. I had a lot on my mind. and still tried to process Enzoâs comment. Did I really abandon my daughter to play mob wife?
âDo you ever feel like a bad parent?â I asked Christian. âSometimes.â He shrugged. âI felt like a bad parent for ruining Sienaâs chances to grow up in a normal family-but Iâm okay now.â He spoke.
âHer poop smells disgusting. She doesnât have it from me.â Christian scrunched up his nose while an unaware Siena giggled. âReally funny,â I rolled my eyes. He was probably trying to cheer me up, but it clearly wasnât working.
âJust donât pay any attention to Enzoâs comment.â Christian sighed. âYou should know what heâs like by now. He says and does stupid things he doesnât mean.â
âI know,â I mumbled. I knew it probably wasnât his intention to hurt my feelings, but the words were still said. âSerena, listen.â Christian smiled as he walked over to me with Siena in his hands.
âGo on, take your daughter.â He smiled while he handed her over. I held Siena in my arms and observed the curious look on her face. âItâs a baby, Serena,â Christian spoke. âShe is not going to hate you because this, you love her, and youâre a good mother.â
âI donât know.â I sighed. âMaybe I should just give up on whatever Iâm doing and try to become a housewife again.â
Siens et con giggles while Christian polled a weird face House He chucket Teen Siena in laughing at vota. â
Just becauer vem surreeded in making soxip once does not mean you can become a housewife Christians mocked me. He brushed his fingers through my hair and planted a kiss against my forehead I already told you that I like having you around. Weâre the best whenever weâre together Denât you think Christian spoke while I nodded my head in response.
âI think this is the therapy we need, spending time togetherâ He confessed. âItâll help us get along better and itâll also make things easier for Siena.â
He was right, we got along today, and it was all because we spend our time together It would only help Siena in the future because all I wanted was to give her two loving parents who got along. I need you to stop listening to my brother,â Christian told me.
âFrom now on. I want you to focus on you, me, Siena, and thatâs it.â
༠guess youâre right.â I smiled. There were more important things in the world than Enzo calling me a bad mom, and the first thing would be tomorrow.
The truth about Dario would finally come out.
