Chapter 179
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
I let out a yawn and rubbed my eyes before I sat up straight to see whatever Christian was doing. It was early in the morning, and as always, he was pulling weird stuff again.
âHey, pervert!â I yelled at him and threw a pillow to his back. Christian froze up and looked at me with guilty eyes.
âGive me a good reason why youâre holding my bikini top and my bra.â
âThatâs because.â Christian stuttered. âW-well, you see-â
âWell?â I frowned. âOkay, youâve got me.â Christian sighed. âI was looking for your size because I think your boobs shrunk.â
I burst out laughing and decided to ignore whatever he was doing. It was obvious it was because he planned on buying me some presents, so I decided to let it drop.
âWhatâs with the footsteps?â I asked Christian as I focused on the sound behind the closed door.
âThe nurses are leaving,â Christian explained. âWe have no need for them anymore and they are moving away their equipment, soâ¦â
The wrong question at the wrong time.
âI canât stop thinking about Gina,â Christian confessed. I tried playing it cool and did not remove the smile from my face.
Relax, Serena, sheâs already gone.
âHow come?â I played along. Christian sighed and sat down on the bed. âShe didnât show me any signs of wanting to leave yesterday, and now sheâs justâ¦gone,â Christian spoke.
âIsnât that a good thing?â I asked. âMaybe sheâs ready to move on with her life an-
âImpossible.â Christian stopped me. âShe went through something traumatic which you canât move on from that quickly. Thatâs impossible.â
âI moved on,â I shrugged. If I could move on with my life, so could she. Her wounds turned into scars, and she could walk just perfectly fine. Christian smiled and caressed his hand through my hair. âNot everyone is as strong as you, Serena.â
I blushed and looked down as I took in Christianâs words. I wouldnât say I liked bragging about myself, but Christian was absolutely right. I was a strong person.
âWell, Enzo said that sheâs fine, and you should trust your brother,â I told Christian. I honestly couldnât care less whether he would figure it out or not, but I had yet to thank Enzo. Knowing him, he probably bribed the nurses to keep their mouths shut.
âSo, what are our plans for today?â I asked Christian. âAre we going to take care of that list? Look for the key? Sell some of that special flour-
âNo, not today.â Christian stopped my imagination. âI want to spend some alone time with my cousins if thatâs alright with you.â Christian smiled. âI want to visit Dana, and I want to introduce Dario to Gio.â
He seemed so suspicious, and my insecurities were getting the best of me. Why did he not want me around? What if he looked at my bra because he planned on buying some other girl stuff instead?
âOh okayâ¦â I murmured. âWill, you at least send me pictures?â
âI-I donât know. Iâll see what I can do.â Christian smiled. He was a lousy liar and was guilty of whatever he had planned, but I was determined to get to the bottom of it. âLet me guess. Beau has suddenly turned into a cousin of yours?â I teased. Christian and Beau did everything together nowadays.
âMaybe,â Christian mumbled.
âQuick question for you.â Christian teased back. âHave you ever got up early in the morning to take care of the baby?â
âNo.â I shook my head. âNot because I donât want to, but because you wonât let me.â I chuckled.
There was no need to get up in the middle of the night or lose any sleep in the morning because Christian was dedicated to his job.
âYou got me there,â Christian spoke, embarrassed. âAlthough Carmen has been taking over my job nowadays.â
âOf course, Carmen.â I smiled. I was extremely grateful for her and could not explain in words how much I loved her. âSheâs planning her party. Itâs in a few days already.â
âA few days?â I spoke, surprised. âWow, sheâs quick.â
âTrue.â Christian shrugged. Sometimes I wished I had the opportunities to go back in time so I could celebrate my youth as she did. âSo are we staying here, or are we leaving?â I asked him. âBecause Iâm sure my parents donât want the party to be unsupervised, but Siena canât be hereâ¦sheâs a baby.â
âWeâll see.â Christian mumbled and got up to Why was he so suspicious, and what was he up to away from me. âWeâll see when the time gets there.â
âAnyway, Iâm going down-you should get down whenever youâre ready.â He smiled. It was surprising to see he was still in a good mood despite everything which was going on.
It took me some time to get ready, but after a while, I finally made my way to the living room. Beau held Siena in his hands and seemed hopeless as he was desperately trying to pull back his face so she couldnât hit him. âAre you practicing?â I asked him.
Beau pulled a disgusted face while Christian placed his hand on his shoulder. âYes, and he sucks at it. 1 donât even think he likes babies.â
âPoor Beau.â I sighed. âHow are you going to take care of two?â
âShe scratched me in my face!â Beau spoke. âItâs not my fault you somehow gave birth to the devilâs offspring.â
âSays the one whoâs having a child with Isobel,â I muttered under my breath before making my way to the kitchen. Carmen was on her laptop, and Enzo sat beside her. âWhat are you guys doing?â I asked.
âSerena is that you!â A familiar voice called out. I let out a gasp and ran over to the laptop so I could see Lukeâs face through the video chat. âLukey, I miss you!â I told him.
Beau and Christian joined us and pulled out a chair. âThatâs enough Siena for the day, you take her.â
Beau spoke as he handed her to Christian.
âSiena, come to mommy!â I cooed and stuck out my hands, but she let out a giggle and leaned towards Christian instead. âJust a few months old, but already a bully.â Enzo laughed.
âYeah, I wonder who she got it from.â I smiled at Christian. I could already tell that she would end up playing the same stupid games as her dad. âAny volunteers to stay here the night of the party? I think a bunch of security might scare off the kids.â Christian spoke.
Enzo gave him a surprised look and frowned his eyebrows. âWonât you look at that? Christian cares about their feelings.â
âStop it,â Christian spoke, annoyed. âIâm just playing with you. Iâll be there to watch these kids.â Enzo smiled before he looked at Beau. âHow about you, Beau?â
Beau scrunched up his nose and shook his head. âSorry, Iâll have to pass.â
âChristian, do we have a limit of people we can invite?â Carmen asked. âNo, of course not.â
Christian shrugged. âInvite whoever you want to invite, but I do think you should make a guest list because I donât like the idea of people sneaking into my house.â
âYay!â Carmen clapped. âThat means I can invite Logan.â
âLogan?â Beau, Christian, Enzo, and Luke spoke at the same time. âWait, hold up a second,â Beau furrowed his eyebrows as he leaned forward. âWho the hell is Logan?â
Poor Carmen had a startled look on her face and didnât know where to look. âCarmen, whoâs Logan?â Luke asked again.
âYou guys are so annoying.â I rolled my eyes and I slammed my arm around Carmenâs shoulder.
The best thing about growing up without brothers was that I didnât have to go through all of this.
âCome on, Carmen, tell them.â I gave her a smile of encouragement.
âLoganâ¦is the guy I have a crush on.â Carmen blushed. âCrush? Youâre like four, I mean, come on?â Enzo chuckled.
âThe guy you have a crush on?â Beau asked, annoyed. âAnd is this one your age or âYes!â Carmen rolled her eyes. âOf course heâs my age-youâre worse than dad!â
âYou know what, Christian.â Beau sighed. âMaybe I might join and supervise this party after all.â
âHow about you, Luke?â I changed the subject to help Carmen out of this situation. âDo you have anyone you like? A girlfriend?â
âA girlfriend?â Luke chuckled. âI donât exactly do titles, but Iâm kind enough to put myself out there for anyone-â
âWhat heâs trying to say is that heâs a pig.â Carmen interrupted him as she rolled her eyes. âJust like Beau, apparently he was also like that before he met Isobel, so there is hope.â
My eyes moved to Enzo, who seemed pleased by his answer because he was probably the same-
but Enzo Tooked at Christian instead.
âSounds familiar, doesnât it, brother?â Enzo laughed out loud while Christian stared at me with an uncomfortable look on his face. âWere you also like that. Christian?â I frowned Christian shrugged his shoulders and had a smirk on his face.
âLetâs talk about you, Serena.â
âM-me?â I pointed to myself while everyone stared at me. âI wish I could see your face right now!â
Luke called out, but it was only a matter of seconds before Enzo turned around the screen.
âI was just like Luke,â I admitted. I wasnât that much different. âI made all the boys fall for me, and I didnât really have to do anything for it.â
âJust like now?â Christian smirked. âI mean me, Vinceâ¦Dario.â
âDid I miss anyone?â
It seemed to be a joke to Christian, and he was unaware of the awkward silence he had created. So Isobel was right, Christian could see through me, but he wasnât saying anything. I felt guilty because I knew it wasnât because he was testing me, but because he didnât have the right to.
It wasnât as if I had cheated on him, and even if I did he still didnât couldnât exactly say anything.
âYou forgot me!â Enzo spoke before he planted a kiss on my cheek. Luckily he was there to save the day. âIâve been crushing on Serena since the day I first met her!â
âThatâs true!â I laughed to ease the tension. âI used to avoid you like the plague, and you just kept following me around all day.â
âAnd how did it work out for you?â Christian teased him. Enzo looked at Siena and leaned forward to pinch her cheek. âObviously not so great.â
Christian let out a chuckle and smiled at me. âCan I take Siena with me today?â He asked while Enzo, Luke, and Carmen were talking about the party again.
The innocent look on his face whenever he asked me that question was to die for. âSure, you can go ahead and take her!â I told Christian and made my way over to him to grab Siena.
âBut not too long because Iâll miss her too much!â I pouted while I attacked Siena with kisses. âSo what are you guys doing again?â
I looked from Beau to Christian, but both of them had a suspicious look on their face. Great, so Beau was in on it too. âGuys,â I asked again in a serious tone. âWhere are you guys going?â
âI told you, I want to get to know Dario a bit better, and I want to visit my brother,â Christian spoke after a few seconds. My eyes moved towards Beau, who shrugged his shoulders before he lowered his head.
âWhy do I feel as if youâre lying to me?â I whispered, confused. It couldnât be something terrible because he was bringing along Beau, and Beau wouldnât lie to me, right?
âSerena,â Christian said my name. âIâm not going to do anything crazy. You have to trust me on this one.â
âOkay,â I sighed. Arguing would not do anything, and he wouldnât tell me what he was up to anyway.
âIâll trust you.â
I was still confused about Christianâs plans for the day, but one thing was sure.
He was up to something.
