Chapter 181
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
Unlike Christianâs expectations, the drive to the hospital was as quiet as it could be, with the only sound being Sienaâs babbling.
âSo, how did you like the family?â Christian asked but felt stupid right after. It almost sounded as the weather is nice today, but he couldnât take the silence anymore.
âGoodâ¦good.â Dario nodded. âEveryone was nice. Grandpa is so much different from what I expected. Grandma is also nice-and your mom? The best-
âMy mom?â Christian laughed. Not many people liked Cesca, and he was aware of it. Sometimes he didnât even know how he felt about her. âThatâs a first. The majority dislikes her.â
Dario had a surprised look on his face. âWhy?
âI donât know where I should start, Christian replied. Knowing his mom, there was probably an entire list of reasons why people were not that fond of Cesca.
âShe seems to love your dad a lot.â Dario noticed.
Yes, they are each otherâs everything.â Christian chuckled. âThere was a time I used to think that she didnât love him, but she loves him beyond words. She isnât that affectionate, but she shows it with her action-
âAnd her eyes,â Dario commented as he looked over at Christian. âThe way your parents look at each otherâ¦itâs the same way you and Serena look at each other.â
Christian tightened his grip around the steering wheel and tried to remain calm. He felt insecure by just hearing him speak about her, and it bothered him, but there was not a lot he could do. Dario was his cousin and making him feel like part of the family was his priority.
âIs that so?â Christian spoke, sarcastic. He felt relieved to see they had already arrived at the hospital and was eager to get out of the car. It was hard to interact with his cousin when all he mentioned was Serena. âWeâre here.â
âWe are,â Dario sighed. âItâs been a long time since Iâve been at a hospital-the elevators scare me.â
Christian had an amused look on his face and turned his head to look at Dario. âYou too?â He asked in disbelief. âMy dad and I donât like them either!â
âMust be some family thingâ Dario grinned. Not long after, the two made their way into the hospital and were headed towards Danaâs room. âGuess what? You get to push the stroller again!â Christian teased him as he pushed the stroller into Darioâs hands.
âWhy are you always letting someone else push it?â Dario nervously asked. âAre you allergic to the material?â
âNo.â Christian chuckled. He ordered Beau to push it because he felt as if it was his job to prepare him for fatherhood, but with Dario it was different. âIâm just asking you, because Siena is also your cousin.â
Dario looked down at Siena with a smile on his face as he took in Christianâs words and realized he was allowing him to be part of the family, Christian trusted him with Siena, and that was a lot. âI get it.â
âBut shouldnât we at least bring a present?â Dario wondered.
âNo.â Christian shook his head. âDana emptied all the stores already. My brother said no more presents.â
âI heard Gio is the coldest out of the three,â Dario spoke. It was well known that Gio was rude, grumpy. and angry all the time-but it wasnât like that anymore. âHe has changedâ¦itâs because of Serena, Christian informed him.
The same brother he used to avoid had changed into a kind and reliable person, and everyone could thank Serena for that.
âI sec.â
âJust donât look at him the wrong way, donât say anything offensive, donât do anything offensive-and oh â Christian began. âDonât flirt with his wife. He will kill you.â
âI got it.â Dario breathed. Christian knew that his brother was nothing like him and would not hesitate to kill his cousin. âLook, weâre here.â Christian smiled as he knocked on the door.
They walked in and watched as Dana munched her food while Gio held the baby in his arms.
âChristian, it took you some time.â Gio chuckled as he made his way over to look at Siena. âLook whoâs in a good mood as always.â He cooed while Siena squealed at his presence.
Christian felt guilty for leaving his brother in the dark about everything and couldnât believe he had to tell him about Dario over the phone, but he did everything for a reason. He wanted his brother to focus on Dana and his three children. All he wanted was for at least one of them to live a happy life.
âSay hello to baby Micah,â Gio smiled and brought the baby closer so Christian could take a better look at him. âHe looks likeâ¦an alien,â Christian concluded.
âHey!â Dana shouted before she threw her slipper into Christianâs direction, but he could dodge it just in time. âI canât remember us ever calling Siena an alien!â
Dario was shocked by Danaâs actions and stood back as he realized these were indeed people he shouldnât be messing with. Even someone like him knew when to stop, and this was it.
Dario had no idea how to ask for Gioâs attention and stared at his cousin, who seemed to ignore his presence.
âWhere are Gigi and Pia?â Christian wondered. Gio pointed to the curtains. âPlaying doctor.â He explained while Danaâs eyes finally moved to Dario.
âIâm sorry, where are my manners!â She spoke with her mouth full. âIâm Dana. Nice to meet you!â
She introduced herself. Gio was finally able to meet Darioâs eyes and gave him a warm smile.
âI feel like I should probably give you a hug.â He commented and handed the baby over to Dana.
âH-hug?â Dario spoke, surprised.
Gio pushed aside Sienaâs stroller and opened his arms to pull Dario into a hug. âYes, of course-I donât like Johnny or Luca, but there is hope for you!â He spoke as he pulled away and placed his hands on Darioâs shoulders.
âDana?â Gio called out and looked behind him to talk to his wife. âDo you like Johnny and Luca?â
Gio didnât even have to finish his sentence, because Dana had already shook her head. âJohnnyâs a bit better than Luca, but both are trash.â
âGuys.â Christian sighed. Dario was confused and didnât know what to make out of it.
He knew Luca was not the same sweet kid he once knew, but Johnny didnât seem all that bad. âW-
why donât we like Johnny?â
âHeâs lyingâ Christian interrupted his brother. âJohnnyâs my favorite cousin-yes, heâs a bit odd sometimes, but thatâs what makes him Johnny!â
âHe likes to pretend as if heâs classier and better than all of us,â Gio complained. âThe guy eats his hamburger with a knife and fork. I canât take him seriously.â
âYes I need him to calm down. Heâs not from the royal family, heâs a Lamberti!â Dana agreed.
âRight.â Dario chuckled. He made a quick note to never eat a hamburger with a knife and fork and took a deep breath. The Lambertiâs were just as his mom described them, loud and bold.
âDo you want to meet your cousins?â Gio asked in a hurry, but before Dario could answer, his head was already turned. âGigi, Pia-come here!â
Dario blinked his eyes as two little girls showed themselves from behind the curtain and made their way to Christian. Gigi ran into his arms while Pia crawled towards him to do the same. âUncle Chrissie!
Christian froze for a second as he thought about his uncleâs nickname, but quickly recovered himself and pulled the two girls into a hug. âI missed you so much.â He smiled and poked the two in their cheeks.
Dario flinched at the sound of Sienaâs squeals and pushed his head into the stroller to see what she was doing, but all the baby could do was laugh. âSo youâre also just as loud as them. You fit right in.â Dario muttered.
Pia stuck out her hands to Dario, who had a startled look on his face and almost cringed at the idea of the two-year-old getting too close. âUp!â She demanded with a pout on her face.
âYou need to hold her. She canât walk by herself.â Gio rolled his eyes while Dario stared from Christian to Pia with frowned eyebrows. âO-oh, okay.â Dario spoke âWho is that?â Gigi asked while she pointed her finger at Dario. Christian picked her up, while Gigi didnât hesitate and placed her hand on Darioâs check.
âHe is pretty and he looks like a prince!â
âHeâs not a prince, heâs your uncle.â Gio correctly her. Christian observed Dario and noticed how overwhelmed he was by the presence of the two little girls. Heâs not that confident anymore, Christian thought to himself.
âDoes he have money to buy us ice cream?â Gigi asked with a hopeful look on her face. Dario looked right into the eyes of Pia, who couldnât stop staring at him.
âI donât know, ask him.â Gio shrugged.
âW-what?â Dario frowned, confused. He grew up in a quiet environment and never experienced.
something like this before.
âSir, do you have money?â
Dario cleared his throat and looked from Christian to Gio, who were also waiting for his answer.
âWhat Christian smiled at Darioâs surprised reaction and could still not believe that there was a time where he didnât like the guy. Dario wasnât the cold person he thought heâd be, no. Christian thought he had something stupid and innocent.
âHow about I watch your baby while you watch my babies,â Gio suggested. Christian shrugged and gave him a nod. âCome on, letâs get the two of you some ice cream!â
âAre they always like that?â Dario wondered while the two made their way to the cafeteria. âYes,â
Christian smiled. âYouâll get used to it after a while.â
âI hope so.â Dario sighed and looked into Piaâs eyes. She was glued to Dario and buried her head in his shoulder. âPia, this or this?â Dario asked, but Pia raised her head and gave him a frown.
âI can talk!â She spoke to his surprise. âIâm three!â
âAlmost, youâre still two. Christian corrected her. âCome on, tell him what you want.â
âI want a strawberry ice cream cone with sprinkles!â Pia spoke without a single stutter. âBig people size!â
âI want the same!â Gigi told Christian.
Dario gasped and stared from Christian to Pia. How can she talk like that?â
âWell, sheâs almost three.â Christian laughed in his face. âYou really donât have the slightest clue about children, do you?â
Dario had an embarrassed look on his face and shrugged his shoulders. âWell, I never worked at a daycare, so excuse me.â
After the two got the children their ice cream, they sat down at a table. Dario was once again surprised by. Christian, who had pulled out drawings and pencils for Gigi and Pia. âYouâre really good with children, Christian,â Dario admitted. âYou keep surprising me.â
âWell,â Christian shrugged.
âDid you always want to be a dad?â Dario wondered. âA dad?â Christian laughed.
âNo, never-Iâve always loved children, but I always told everyone that I didnât want to have any.â
âHow come?â
Christian was quiet for a second and wondered whether it was necessary to open up to his cousin while he hadnât even opened up to his own brothers. âFear,â Christian answered.
âMy dadâ¦we get along now, but growing up, he wasnât the best.â Christian shared. âI never got to experience him bringing me to school, or giving me hugs, telling me he loved me-
âNeither did I., Dario interrupted him. âBut my dad did what Lucio couldnât do for you, am I right?â
Christian thought about his uncle and how he always tried his best to take care of him and his brothers. He hadnât even realized it, but it was true. His uncle was always there for him.
âYou should let those children be children.â
âYou shouldnât raise him like that,â
âYour sons needs a father figure, not a dictator.â
Those were the words his uncle Berto used to tell his dad over and over again. Christian couldnât understand why his uncle had turned against him. For what reason?
âI donât hate you for it, I admire you for how youâve turned out, and I can see how much you love Siena.â Dario smiled at him. âI donât know a lot, but I can clearly see that youâre a good dad.â
âThanks,â Christian smiled. âI appreciate that.â
âYou do, donât you?â Dario chuckled, âBy the way, whatâs the thing about you sending Serena to Panama tomorrow?â
âWe need to look for the key, and I donât want her to get involved,â Christian explained. âUncle Berto has been quiet, a little bit too quiet, and I know heâs up to somethingâ
âProbably,â Dario spoke. âHe blocked my number, so he must know about me reuniting with the Lambertiâs, but thereâs no way heâll let it rest.â
âI know, but donât worry. Your uncle is well protected.â Christian reassured Dario. Christian was anxious and had no idea what his uncle would do next, but he did know one thing. Berto could not reach Luca and had nothing to lose anymore, so whatever he was planning would be big.
Dario took a deep breath and leaned back with a smirk on his face while Christian gave him a questioning. look. âWhatâs up?â
âItâs time for us to talk about Serena.â
âWhat about Serena?â
âSheâs still a close friend, so I want to talk about that dayâ¦when you saved your assistant and didnât event bother looking for Serena.â
âIt wasnât like that.â Christian defended himself. Serenaâs life was not in danger, so it was a natural reaction to him. âSee, it is.â Dario sighed.
âI know that itâs none of my business, and I might not know a lot about babies, but I know a lot about relationships, and I can tell Serena was pissed at you.â
âItâs over-weâve already discussed it,â Christian told Dario, but he was nowhere near finished.
âDid you tell her that the girl didnât matter and that you only love her?â
âYes, thatâs what I did,â Christian spoke, annoyed. âThat right there is the issue!â Dario told him.
Christian gave him a confused look and was waiting for his explanation.
âDidnât you also tell Serena you loved her right before you cheated on her with the exact same girl?â
âW-well.â Christian stuttered. He froze up and thought about the day after he betrayed Serena. He thought about how he looked her in the eye and told her he loved her-right after hurting her. He finally realized that Serena still had trust issues and that those words wouldnât be enough.
