Chapter 187
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
Christian âYou go ahead. I have to make a quick callâ Christian told Dario as the two had finally reached the warehouse.
Christian gave Beau the task to help Carmen prepare for the party because he didnât want to abandon her. A happy Carmen meant a happy Serena, and he did not want to risk anything He smiled at Serenaâs text message before his eyes moved to Dario. âI think Iâll pass. I still feel a bit uncomfortable.â Dario told him.
Christian wanted to call Serena before her departure and had hoped for it to be a private conversation, but he knew that if he was willing to share the business, it also meant he had to trust his cousin.
âSure, whatever you want.â Christian sighed as he gave Dario a side-eye. He dialed Serenaâs number and waited for her to answer her phone.
âChrissie. I was just about to call you!â Serena spoke enthusiastically. Christian was surprised at her cheerful tone and looked at Dario, who couldnât help but laugh along. It was a complete contrast from just a few hours ago.
L She didnât want to say goodbye to Siena, and even Christian felt guilty. âYou sound much happier than when, you left.âHe commented.
âYes!â Serena spoke. Christian focused his attention on the voices in the background. He thought about Isobel, who mustâve been uncomfortable because she wasnât like Serena or her friends. âIâm actually really excited!â
âWhereâs Siena? Can I hear her voice?â Serena asked in a hurry. Christian widened his eyes and was lost for words. He didnât want to tell her that her tears were for nothing and that also he could not take care of the baby at the moment.
âSiena?â Christian mumbled while he tried to come up with a reasonable explanation as to why she couldnât speak to the baby. âSheâs asleep.â
Dario stared at Christian with raised eyebrows and wondered why he would even lie about something like that. âAsleep?â Serena huffed. âWhy do we have a boring baby?â
Christian heard a deep sigh from her mouth before she turned back into her cheerful self.
âWeâre leaving in just thirty minutes. Can you believe that?â Serena spoke full of excitement.
Seeing Serena happy meant a lot to him, and he had always admired how the smallest things used to excite her. âYes, I planned the trip,â Christian joked.
âTrue!â Serena spoke, while Christian could once again not help himself and laughed at Serenaâs reaction. âWhatâs funny? Why are you laughing?â Serena asked.
âItâs because youâre cute,â Christian admitted with ease while he focused on the sound of Serenaâs endless giggles. âI donât know how Iâm going to survive two days without you and Siena.â She spoke.
âIâm going to miss you so muchâ¦I actually donât even want to spend a day without you.â Serena told him. âI think Iâm obsessed with you,â
Christian grew a smile on his face and looked at Dario. He was happy Dario heard those words, and despite everything, he needed him to know that Serena was his. He was willing to share the family business, but he would not share Serena.
âI agree. Youâre a bit obsessed with me.â Christian chuckled. âBut I want you to have fun. You deserve it.â
âI do?â Serena asked, surprised. Christian had already expected that reaction and knew that Serena thought otherwise. She enjoyed staying at home and wouldnât leave the house to do something fun unless someone dragged her out.
âOf course, you do.â Christian smiled. âYou deserve the worldâ¦so I need you to have fun.â
âYes, she will!â Christian suddenly heard a voice call out. He had recognized that voice instantly and knew it was Luna, who always had a lot to say. âWeâre going to shop, party, get drunk-drink shots from some random guyâs abs.â
âStop it!â Serena yelled out, while Christian couldnât believe his ears. âYou girls are going to do what?â
âNothing!â Serena defensively spoke. Christian didnât worry about her friendâs words because he trusted Serena. He desperately wanted to believe that she wasnât like him and that even though he deserved it, she did not have the heart to hurt him.
âOkay, I have to go now-bye, please give Siena a kiss for me!â
âSerena, wait!â Christian spoke. He had never realized how good it actually felt to hear her voice, and he did not want to end the phone call.
-âYes?â
âPlease call me when you land.â Christian requested. He almost felt embarrassed by that question, but he couldnât help it. âOf course I will!â Serena promised. âBut I really have to go now!â
âI love you, âChristian told her as thousandth things went through his head.
What if the plane would crash?
Did he dress her warm enough?
What if she would enjoy her days and realize she didnât need him anymore?
He felt weak for worrying over those little things, but that was the kind of effect Serena had on him.
That was the kind of effect she had on everyone.
âI love you too,â Serena responded before she hung up the phone.
âSo,â Dario yawned as he turned his head to look at the backseat. âOur Siena is not asleep, sheâs not even here, so I would like to know who the hell youâre talking about.â
Our Siena? Christian thought. Even worse than sharing Serena was sharing Siena. He was not going to do that.
âSerena cried because she couldnât take Siena. Do you think it wouldâve looked good if I told her 1 dropped her off somewhere?â Christian spoke.
âShe knows what youâre doing, doesnât she?â Dario shrugged. Everything was always so simple to him, and he believed the truth wouldâve made everything much easier for everyone. âShe does know.â Christian sheâs the snake, do you?â
âAunt Lena?â Christian almost burst out laughing. That woman has worms for brains. It couldnât be her He spoke as he took another look at the list. âBut her sonâ¦.his name is Kenzo, and you havenât met him yet.â
âBecause he wasnât at the party.â Dario finally realized. Christian told him everything he needed to know on the way to the warehouse, so putting two and two together was not that difficult.
Christian had a good feeling that if anyone were up to the task, it wouldâve been Kenzo. His cousin grew up without a father figure and his mother. Lena, who lived a reckless life, wasnât the best example.
âHeâs just turned seventeen. Heâs like a tiny, scared chicken and very easy to manipulate.â Christian chuckled as he pointed out the name.
âSo what? Weâre going after a seventeen-year-old?â Dario laughed, but the expression on his face had quickly changed after seeing just how serious Christian was.
âWe canât find the key before we eliminate the snake, Christian told him. He was not a big fan of going after his family or teenagers, but he didnât have a choice.
âYouâre not going to interrogate the poor kid, are you?â Dario asked. He was capable of many things, but going after a seventeen-year-old wasnât one of them.
âI just want to talk with him, thatâs all,â Christian spoke, but Dario didnât like the sound of that. He knew Berto Lamberti was capable of frightening grown men, so he couldnât even imagine how frightened the teenager mustâve been.
âYou know,â Christian began. âRelaying information about the warehouse is a severe crime in this family âItâs a kid.â Dario whispered. Christian was confused and didnât understand why Dario was overreacting. He never said he wanted to kill his cousin. He just wanted to talk with him.
âIf heâs working with my dad, I think we shouldnât take it too hard on him,â Dario stood by his point.
âWe should sit him down and tell him that we can help him.â
Christian was speechless and listened to Darioâs words. âI know we have to eliminate the snake first, but I wonât blame a teenager for my dadâs actions,â Dario spoke as he placed his hand on Christianâs shoulder.
âSo I need you to promise me.â Dario sighed. âI need you to promise me that youâll listen to whatever he has to say, and I need you to promise me that youâll let me lead the conversation.â
Christian laughed at Darioâs request and realized just how different they were. While he wanted to get things done quickly and would approach his younger cousin in a bit more aggressive way, Dario had plans to do it in a more friendly way.
I can learn a lot from him, Christian thought as he gave Dario a nod.
They balanced out each otherâs personalities, and that was exactly what Christian needed. That was exactly why he was prepared to share the family business.
âFine, weâll do it your way.â
