Chapter 190
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
âSiena, do you see all of this?â Christian asked as he walked through the driveway. He did just as promised. and picked up Siena, so he could at least spend some time with her, but the last thing he expected was the thousands of trucks and people on his property.
He barely felt comfortable around people he didnât know, and he was starting to second-guess his decision. Maybe it wasnât such a good idea after all.
âYour aunt and your uncle are starting to feel a little bit too comfortable, donât you think?â He asked Siena. He could hear her familiar squeal near his ear and laughed at her reaction.
âOf course you donât mind. Youâre just like the Alfonzoâs.â
He entered the house with the mission to find Carmen, but the last thing he had expected when he walked towards the living room was to find Matteo, who stared right back at him.
Christianâs eyes moved to Carmen and Luke, who were having some kind of discussion with Enzo and Beau.
Did he found out? Christian thought. He still felt anxious about Berto and suspected Matteo mightâve visited for the wrong reasons.
âYou!â Matteo called out. Christian blinked his eyes in confusion and decided to wait for Matteoâs reaction, but all Matteo did was pull Christian into an unexpected hug. âI heard you send my daughter on vacation, and I heard all about what youâve been doing for Carmen and Luke!â
Siena leaned forward to go to Matteo while Christian handed her over. âShe hasnât forgotten what her grandpa looks like!â
Christian smiled at Siena and caressed his fingers through her hair. It was still beyond him how his uncle. would ever want to break the bond between the Lambertiâs and the Alfonzoâs.
âSo, what have you been up to?â Matteo asked. âNothing.â Christian spoke to get him off his back, but it wasnât exactly that easy. âNothing?â Matteo chuckled. âHow are you going to keep a business running by doing nothing.â
âRight?â Christian played along. Matteoâs presence still made him anxious, and it was mainly because he knew how fast that man had turned against him.
âWhere are you leaving Siena tomorrow?â Matteo asked. Christian cracked his brains and thought about tomorrow, but he couldnât understand what Matteo meant by that. âWhat?â
âYou werenât planning on letting her stay here, right?â Matteo questioned. âThe party?â
Right, the party.
âOh, the party!â Christian spoke.
âNo, of course not.â
The thought of letting Siena stay somewhere else, hadnât even crossed his mind. After hearing those words. from Matteoâs mouth, he realized how strange it was to keep a baby at a party. He couldnât do that.
âLita and I can take her if you want,â Matteo spoke as he looked down at Siena. Christian took a deep breath and couldnât believe that he was yet again abandoning his daughter while she couldâve had a nice vacation with Serena.
âIâd appreciate that, thank you.â
âDo you want me to take her right now?â Matteo offered, but Christian shook his head. âNo!â He nearly yelled. Matteo had a confused frown on his face and stared at Christian. âIâm sorry.â Christian apologized as he came back to his senses.
âNo, not now-Iâd like to spend some time with her.â He spoke more calmly. Matteo gave him a nod.
âOf course, Lita will be home all day.â
âSo Iâll bring her over tomorrow,â Christian confirmed.
âThatâs fine.â Matteo smiled.
âI shouldâve told you about Serena. Iâm so sorry.â Christian apologized. He knew how much Serena meant to the Alfonzoâs and realized he didnât have the best approach. âItâs fine,â Matteo reassured him. âSerena is your responsibility now, and I trust youâll never make a mistake ever again-so itâs fine.â
I trust youâll never make a mistake ever again.
Those words werenât as comforting to Christian. He knew he screwed up, but the worst thing was that his every second. mistake would be haunting him for years. He did not want to hear it âSo Carmen and Luke went all out, didnât they?â Christian changed the subject. âThey did. Itâs so generous of you.â Matteo smiled. âI heard you didnât only allow them to have it in your house, but that youâre also covering all the expenses.â
Am I? Christian thought.
âThey went all out. They even rented a DJ.â Matteo sighed. Christian let out an awkward laugh as he thought about the state of his house. He already couldnât deal with Serena leaving her trail of trash around. the house.
âCan I offer you something to drink?â Christian offered, but Matteo shrugged him off. âDonât bother. I was just about to leave.â He smiled as he gave Siena to Christian.
âAlready?â Christian sighed. It was all an act, and he couldnât be any happier to hear Matteo wouldnât be staying any longer. All Christian wanted to do was spend some alone time with Siena.
Once Dario and Kenzo would find the key, things wouldâve been hectic, and he knew he wouldnât have time to do that anymore. âIs there something I should worry about for the party tomorrow?â
Matteo wondered.
Christian went into deep thoughts. âSome guy named Logan?â Christian remembered. âCarmen likes.
him.â
âThen you know what to do,â Matteo spoke in a threatening tone. Christian laughed and thought about Beau. Even though Beau still despised the Alfonzoâs and was in deep denial whenever someone told him how much he looked like his dad, Christian also agreed and thought he was just like Matteo.
âIâll keep an eye on her.â Christian smiled. He personally didnât understand the big deal and secretly wondered if he would also be like that with Siena. âIs she not allowed to date?â Christian wondered.
âNot before Iâve done a background check,â Matteo spoke. âMy daughters only deserve the best, and so do my sons.â He whispered the last part and turned his head to look at Beau.
âStill not a fan of Isobel, I see?â Christian commented. It was no secret that Isobel wouldnât even be part of the family if Christian hadnât spoken to her grandfather.
âSheâs still a snitch, and sheâs changing my son into a puppet,â Matteo spoke through gritted teeth.
âI liked him better when he was cold and quiet.â
Christian couldnât exactly deny the second part. Beau had lost his charm, and even though he was still rude, he became less cold, which meant others were less frightened.
âHow are you holding up?â Matteo spoke and placed his hand on Christianâs shoulder. Christian hated that question, and just the thought of Lucio made him emotional. He knew any sane person wanted to spend some time with Lucio, but for Christian, it had changed.
Maybe if I visit him less, he wonât die as quickly. Those were the only thoughts going through Christianâs head as he thought about losing his father.
âIâm good.â Christian lied, but Matteo could see right through him. âI know we didnât really get along for a while, but if you ever need someone to talk to, you can come to me-just like back in the days.â
Matteo comforted him.
âRemember back in the days when you used to tell me and your uncle Berto every little thing that bothered you because Lucio wouldnât listen?â
âRight,â Christian mumbled. No one barely mentioned his uncle anymore, but it had suddenly changed. It almost seemed like fate.
âAnyway, I have to go now,â Matteo spoke before he leaned down to kiss Siena on her cheek. âShe has Serenaâs cheeks, doesnât she?â Christian smiled.
âShe does. I just want to eat them up.â Matteo agreed. He kissed Siena one last time before he made his way back to the living room. Christian leaned against the wall and smiled at how he treated his daughter a bit differently from his sons. It reminded him of his own father, but Christian had already decided that it wouldnât happen to him.
If he were to have more children, he would show his sons just as much love as his daughters.
Christian waited until Matteo had left before he decided to show himself and walked over to the others. âSo, how is the party planning going?â He asked. Carmen and Luke stopped doing what they were doing and walked over to Siena.
âAnyone?â Christian chuckled. âAs you can see, itâs going great!â Beau spoke, sarcastic, and glared at Enzo. âThere is a bar, a DJ, an ice sculpture-â
âAlcohol-free, I hope?â Christian smiled at Carmen and Luke. âYes, of course!â Enzo jumped in. âIâm not crazy!â
âOf course youâre not.â Christian decided to join in. It was quite some statement of Enzo to claim that he wasnât crazy. âI have some stuff to do on my own, so Siena and I are going upstairs,â
Christian announced.
twinâs spot He turned around to walk away while Beau followed after him. âDo you want to take your while sheâs not here?â Christian chuckled. âNo.â Beau rolled his eyes. âHow did it go? Did you find the key?â âNo.â Christian sighed as he stopped in his steps. His mind went back to his cousin, who was the proof of how weak his family had become. âIt turned out the snitch was my 17-year-old cousin.â
âOuch.â Beau commented. âOh, donât worry.â Christian chuckled. âLuckily, our angel Dario was there to save the day and got through to him.â He spoke in a sarcastic tone.
âThatâs great!â Beau spoke, relieved.
âTheyâre looking for the key, but I have to make some calls, and Iâll tell you everything once itâs confirmed.â Christian shared. Beau looked back at the others and felt stuck. He wanted to help Christian, but he also felt the need to keep an eye on Enzo.
âHelp your sister and Luke, you canât leave them alone with Enzo, and I need you to watch these random people in the house-the guards are useless.â
âThey are.â Beau agreed. âTheyâre just standing there like a bunch of statues, but donât worry-I got you.â
âGood.â
Beau patted Christianâs shoulder and walked off before Christian made his way upstairs. He looked down at Siena and kissed her head. âIt seems like we finally have some alone time.â
