Chapter 205
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
Christian Christian leaned against the door frame and stared at Carmen, who was peacefully asleep. It was several hours after the party and as much as he wanted to do it, the traumatic experience was something he could not remove for her. It took a lot of patience, but she was finally asleep.
Christian felt guilty for staying at home, while Beau, Johnny, and Dario were already preparing for every worse case scenario. Even then. Christian believed the business was in good hands and trusted Dario to the fullest. Someone had to watch Carmen and Luke, and it had to be him. Beau would lose it if he would find out about Johnnyâs decision to sacrifice his siblings.
Christian was not in the mood to sleep and did not want to leave the twins alone. Enzo was around, but he didnât know about anything, and Christian didnât want him to fall back into his old habits.
Especially not when his brother was finally healthy again..
âDo you think she will be okay?â
Christian turned around and stared at Luke. He felt terrible about everything they went through and especially about his request to keep quiet, but it was for the best. Berto planned to destroy the family, and Christian wouldnât let him. The last people who knew about what had happened, the better.
âItâs Carmen.â Christian smiled. âOf course, sheâll be okay.â
âProbably, yes.â Luke nodded. He stepped forward and looked at his sister. Christian noticed the troubled look on his face and slammed his arm around his shoulder. âIâm proud of you.â Christian praised him. âYou were probably scared, but you stayed strong for Carmen.â
âThatâs not true,â Luke shook his head. He was in denial, which was one thing Christian did not want for him. âI didnât even do anything. I couldnât because Iâm too weak.â
âThatâs not true,â Christian spoke. âYou did what you could, and you shouldnât grow up too fast.
Youâre a good brother.â
A slight smile appeared on Lukeâs face. He had a different opinion, but it felt good to hear a compliment from the person he respected and looked up to.
âSo that Logan kid, how does Carmen know him?â Christian wondered. He didnât want to interrogate Luke, but there were still missing pieces to the puzzle.
How advanced was Berto with his plan, and how could Logan even force himself into Carmenâs life?
âShe told me she met him at the mallâ¦Iâm sorry, this is all my fault-â
âNo, it isnât,â Christian reassured him. âThis is what Berto does and what he has been doing, he has people everywhere, and no one can escape from that.â
Did someone approach you recently? Or did you make any new friends?â Christian questioned further. Luke tried to think of an answer, but his mind went blank. âNo, I donât think so.â
âGood.â Christian spoke, relieved. âThat means he probably send Logan to keep an eye on the both of you.â
âYes, but why?â Luke blinked, surprised.
âThe two of you were at the wrong place at the wrong time,â Christian explained. âBerto has eyes.
everywhere and had it not been you and Carmen, it wouldâve been someone else.â
Christianâs biggest worry was that his uncle was already several steps ahead of everyone, while they were just getting started. Berto had years to come up with a plan, and he was obviously succeeding. One thing Christian had learned the difficult way was that his uncle always had a backup plan.
âThe thing with Johnny-â Christian began. Luke shrugged him off and gave him a nod. âYes, I know.
We wonât tell Beau anything, just like we wonât tell anyone about what happened tonight.â
It was an unfair request, but Christian couldnât help it. He needed Beau, and he also knew that Beau would direct his hatred towards Johnny if he would ever learn of the truth. âIâm taking you and Carmen home tomorrow morning.â
âI understand,â Luke nodded. âAnd Iâll also make sure to keep it from my parents.â
âThanks.â Christian chuckled. âI shouldnât even be asking this from you, but thanks. I appreciate it.â
âSo, how long have you known about your uncle?â Luke asked. Christian led him out of the room and closed the door to let Carmen sleep in peace. He told Luke everything he needed to know and did it in trust.
âSo thatâs why Dario is suddenly in the picture,â Luke concluded. âIâm so happy that I have three older brothers, so Iâll never have to go through this. Dad will never give me the business, and thatâs a good thing.â
âIs it?â Christian laughed. Even though he had two older cousins who deserved the position more than he did, two older brothers, and a thirsty uncle, it still hadnât changed a thing. Despite being one of the youngest, he was still the head of the family.
âAnything can happen, Luke.â Christian patted him on his back. âCome on, get some sleep.â
Christian gave Luke one last smile and watched as he walked off to his room. Christian had his own plans and made his way straight to his office. He wanted to be on top of everything, and he had to make sure that the ones who did know about Berto were on their A-game.
Berto was still a mystery, and there was still so much they needed to find out. Dario had disowned him from the Orlandoâs, which left them with many questions.
Where did Berto live?
Where did he find his army?
Are there more?
What was his game plan?
Just thinking about it made Christianâs head turn. He did everything in his power to not get anyone else in the family involved, but it had all failed. It would only be a matter of time before Berto would reveal himself, and all Christian could hope for was that his uncle would keep his word.
All he could hope for was that Berto would not show himself until Lucio had found peace.
Christian pulled out his phone to look at his screen and smiled at the sight of Serena and Siena. His own little family, as he liked to call it.
They werenât perfect. He knew that better than anyone-but he wanted to become a better person, and he had promised himself to work towards the kind of father and husband he needed to be.
He couldnât wait to see Siena and he couldnât wait to hold Serena in his arms again. Even though they werenât in his life for a long time, he felt empty without them. Christian was just about to put away his phone, but stopped in the process as Serenaâs name appeared on the screen.
âWhy are you not asleep?â He frowned as he took a look at the time and picked up the phone.
âYou should be asleep. Are you okay?â Christian asked in a hurry. He heard the same warm, familiar giggle, which made his heart melt.
âI didnât think youâd pick up.â Serena spoke. âIâm fine, but I was just so nervous, and I needed to know that you were alright-â
âIâm fine,â Christian answered. He knew how Serena could get whenever things werenât going as well, and he didnât want to make her nervous. âHow did it go with Berto? Do you have him?â Serena asked.
Christian was unsure of what to say and let out a deep breath. It wasnât as if he could lie to her because she would find out either way. âChristian!â
âNoâ¦no. I donât have him,â Christian admitted. It almost felt as if Serena had stopped breathing for a second. âWhat do you mean, you donât have him?â She asked, irritated.
Is she disappointed in me?
That was the only thought going through Christianâs mind. He didnât care about what others thought of him, but he cared about Serenaâs opinion.
âI will explain everything tomorrow, not now.â Christian sighed. How would he be able to tell her that he put her siblings in an uncomfortable situation? One that couldâve been prevented if he had just listened.
âY-yes, okay.â Serena tried to remain strong, but Christian could hear the nerves through the phone.
It didnât matter what anyone said. He had never changed his mind and believed Serena deserved a normal life.
âI know youâre probably disappointed in me.â Christian began. âAnd I know that youâre scared, and Iâm really sorry. but I promise you that-â
âDisappointed?â Serena chuckled. âChristian, you have only disappointed me once, and you know why that was.â She spoke. âIâm not disappointed. I admire you and everything you do for this family.â
âI donât deserve you,â Christian whispered. That was the only thing he could say without a single doubt. âI treated you like shit from the moment youâve been here, Iâve disrespected you, betrayed you, and youâre still by my side. I donât deserve you.â
âNo!â Serena spoke, annoyed. âI know where this is going, and weâre not having this conversation again!â She made herself clear. âWe will do whatever necessary to stop your uncle because weâre a team and I wonât let you dump me, so whatever you were thinking of saying-donât!â
Christian laughed at Serenaâs unexpected rant. âI was only going to say that I love you and that I need you, because I canât live without you, but thanks for the encouragement.â
âOhâ¦â Serena spoke, embarrassed. âWell, now you know how I feel about us, so.â
Thatâs right, Christian thought. He believed that he was responsible for Serenaâs feelings towards Dario. For every horrible name he had ever called her, Dario had praised her in return, and that was not his job. Thatâs mine job, Christian told himself. From now on things would be different.
âWhat are you doing?â Serena asked.
âIâm trying to think of ways to stop my uncleâ¦but it isnât really going anywhere,â Christian answered truthfully. He had always respected Serenaâs advice.
âItâs not going anywhere because you need to go to bed.â Serena scolded him. âYouâre not a robot.
You need your sleep.â
âI know, I know.â Christian smiled. âBut right before you called me, I was staring at a picture of you and Siena, and I was thinking, how nice would it be if we could fit a few more babies in that picture?â
âYouâre so annoying!â Serena teased him. âYou just wonât stop talking about it, will you?â
âJust think about it!â Christian explained. âWouldnât it be amazing if we would get a son who looks like me?â
âLike you?â Serena commented. âCold, arrogant, annoying, irritating, aggressive, and evil?â
âH-huh?â Christian stuttered, confused. He could not tell if she was telling the truth or doing it on purpose. âIâm kidding!â Serena laughed. âOh no, you sound so sad. It was a joke.â
âWas it really?â
âYes,â Serena reassured him. âIf we would have a sonâ¦he would be just as brave, caring and hard-
working as you.â âIs that really how you see me?â Christian asked. After all those things I said to you?â
âYes, it is.â Serena confirmed. âI mean, youâre not perfectâ¦and youâre not always that nice to me, but you also have your good sides.â
âWhat do I need to change about myself?â Christian asked. It was nice to get his mind off everything, and this was exactly what he needed. Serena.
âI donât want you to change. I want you to stay Christian.â Serena told him. âBut if you really want to know, I think you should think before you say somethingâ¦especially in arguments.â
Christian appreciated Serenaâs honesty and couldnât disagree with her. He was still shocked by the names he had called her and could not stop thinking about it. He wasnât stupid and knew that âsorryâ
would not cut it, not this time.
âI agree.â Christian smiled. âAnd Iâm glad youâre so honest.â
âAnd Iâm glad youâre cool with it.â Serena yawned. Christian felt bad for keeping her up this late.
âSerena, 1 you need some sleepâ
think âButâ¦will you be okay?â Serena spoke, exhausted. âI canât go to sleep unless I know that youâll be fine.â
âI am fine,â Christian answered âBut Iâll be even happier if I know youâre asleep.â
âOkay.â Serena mumbled. âI should go to sleep, because that means I get to see you soonerâ¦and I really canât wait to See you.â
âI know.â Christian smiled. âNeither can I.â
