Chapter 221
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
âItâs almost ridiculous how you manage to take good pictures of yourself but bad pictures of your daughter,â Isobel commented. âItâs a bit selfish, donât you think?â
We were in my room. During the past two days at my parents' house, she was nice enough to keep me company. Just like Christian, Beau was too busy, and Luis was at his older brotherâs place. I, of course, preferred Christianâs company a bit more, but Isobel would do for now.
âI guess Iâm sorry.â I shrugged. âWeâll get back to this subject in a few months.â
Isobel shook her head. âNo, we wonât.â She smiled. âBecause Iâll take better pictures of my babies.â
âSpeaking of babies, you should lower your voice for once,â I complained. âSiena is sleeping, and trust meâwe do not want to wake her up.â
âAnyway, you should send him this picture.â Isobel pointed out. âItâs the only decent one.â
If there was something that scared me, it was her straightforward personality. It was hard to imagine what kind of demons she would bring onto this planet, considering my brother also had a questionable personality. âThank you.â I sighed. âI donât care if he forgets about me, but he canât forget about Siena.â
âHe wonât. You know that.â
Did I? Being apart from him made me nervous. The only thing which would make me comfortable was a tracker in his phone. At least that way, I could find out whatever he was up to.
âSo, how are things between the two of you?â Isobel asked.
âGood, perfect actuallyâand it scares me,â I spoke. âThe last time things were this good, he cheated on me.â
âYeah.â Isobel chuckled. âHe wonât do it again.â
I shot her a sarcastic look. âI mean it. He wonât!â She defended him. Of course, I trusted Christian, but I wasnât about to let him make a fool out of me for the second time.
âThings are different this time,â Isobel stated.
âHow?â
âHe knows that youâll not let him walk over you, and he knows that youâll do whatâs best for Siena.â
I smiled at her answer. I didnât want to be too controlling, but perhaps that was the best thing. One thing was sure. I was going to do what was best for Siena and was done giving second chances.
âHow are things with Dario?
âStill awkward, but I donât even care anymore.â I shrugged, trying to hide my sadness. âIt doesnât matter.â
Of course, it did. He was more than someone I used to work with. He was a good friend who used to have my backâand now I couldnât have his. The sweet Dario, who I became friends with, had changed into a cold stone, and there was nothing I could do about it.
As crazy as it sounded, Christianâs confession about forcing him to take his distance from me made me feel a bit better. At least I knew I wasnât the problem.
âEnough about me. How is my brother treating you?â
âGood.â Isobel nodded.
âHow are you treating him?â
âGood, we havenât argued in days.â
âThatâs good!â I spoke, surprised, expecting to hear the worst. Isobel laughed. âWhatâs with the look on your face?â
âI just canât believe the two of you are getting along,â I admitted. I had always been certain those two wouldnât even reach the end of the pregnancy.
âYes, we donât have a choice,â Isobel shared. âI feel like he has changed a lot since the whole thing at the photoshoot went downâ¦but I think everyone did.â
âTrue.â
The unfortunate event at the photoshoot brought both families closer. It was too bad someone had to die for us to realize how fast all of this could end.
âSpeaking of changes, ditching my cousin and her nasty friends is the best decision you ever made!â Isobel spoke. âWell, except for Maddie, of course, because sheâs your sister-in-law.â
âI forgot they existed.â
Isobel looked at me with big eyes. âDonât you know what theyâve been saying about you?â
âI really donât careââ
âTheyâre making up rumors about you and Dario.â
Of course, they were because at the end of the dayâSerena was the talk of the town. Nothing new.
âI donât care.â I shrugged, unbothered. âI know the truth, he knows the truth, and Christian knows the truth.â
Isobel smiled proudly and pulled me into a side hug. âYouâve changed a lot, but for the better.â She complimented me. âItâs unlike you to remain calm about something like this.â
âIt feels good, though,â I spoke. âYou should try it yourself sometime.â
Our conversation got interrupted by my mom, who knocked on the door. âDinnerâs ready!â
âGood, Iâm starving, and so are my babies.â Isobel jumped up from the bed. I ignored her words and looked at Christianâs name, which had appeared on my phone screen. âYou go ahead. Christian is calling me.â
Isobel, who didnât let me finish my sentence, had already walked out the door. âGood luck!â
I grew a smile on my lips and picked up the phone, excited to hear Christianâs voice. âHey.â I greeted him.
âAre you okay?â
âYes, how areââ
âIs Siena okay?â
âYes, how areââ
âWhat is she doing? Can I hear her voice?â Christian asked in a hurry. âSheâs sleeping.â
âSleeping? This early?â He worried. âWhat will you do if she wonât be able to sleep tonight?â
As expected, this was nothing more than Christian being Christian. He was always stressing himself out over stuff which wasnât that big of a deal. âIâll figure it out. Iâm her mom!â I spoke sarcastically.
âIâm sorry.â Christian laughed. âI just want the two of you to get enough sleep. I know youâll figure it out.â
âHow are you?â I finally asked. âA lot better after hearing your voice,â Christian answered.
âAnd how are things going?â
It was silent for a second. âEverything will get back to normal before you know it,â Christian spoke. It wasnât an answer to my question, which made me even more anxious.
âSure, how long?â
âLike a week?â Christian suggested. I blinked, surprised as I took in his words. For some reason, I had expected it to be a bit longer. âWait, are you serious?â
âYes,â Christian confirmed. âI promised to take you home soon, and I meant it.â He said. âIt'll all be over before you know it.â
I let out an excited squeal, making him laugh.
âIâm sorry, we just really miss you,â I told him.
âSerena, itâs been two days.â
âYes, I knowâand you havenât visited.â
Christian sighed. âIâm sorry, Iâll make it up to you and Siena.â He spoke. âWeâre just so close, Iâve been so busy, and the last thing I needââ
âIs a distraction?â I finished his sentence. For some reason, it sounded much better coming from my mouth.
âYouâre not a distraction. If anything, you and Siena are the only reason why Iâm not falling apart.âChristian admitted. We had come a long way from him calling everything I did annoying.
âI really miss you.â I pouted. âWhat are you doing right now?â
âI have a meetingââ
âAnd Iâm bothering you!â I spoke, startled. He was the one who had called me, but after all of my phone callsâit was actually not that surprising.
âNo, I stepped out to hear your voice,â Christian reassured me. âWhat are you doing?â
He left his meeting to hear my voice.
âIsobel is just as lonely as I am, and she came to visit. We were just about to have dinnerââ
âThen you should eat!â Christian interrupted me. If I didnât know any better, I wouldâve said it was an easy way to end this conversation.
âWhat?â
âI donât want you to skip any meals. You should eat.â Christian spoke. âDonât let me stop you from eating.â
The word âeatâ was enough to make my stomach growl. âYes, Iâm kind of hungry.â I realized. âCan I call you later, or will you be busy?â
Christian chuckled. âIâm never too busy for you. You know that.â
âThen why arenât you visiting?â I blurted, regretting it afterward. Picking a fight with Christian should not be my priority at the moment and would only cause him more stress.
I had expected Christian to get irritated, but his laughter came as a surprise. âYou got me there,â
Christian spoke. âLook, itâs time for me to goâbut I love you.â
I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down as I thought about the reason why he was doing all of this in the first place. I didnât have the right to complain because he was doing all of this for Siena.
There was no other way. âI love you too!â
After the phone call, I made my way to the dining room. I smiled at the image of Carmen, Luke, Isobel, and my mom getting along. Ever since dad, Marcello, Emilio, and Beau had been occupied with work, it was just the four of us. Somehow my mom had learned to accept Isobel, which undeniably had to do with the babies and the fact that she couldnât get rid of her. Not anymore.
âThere you are!â My mom got up from her chair. I took in the sour smell of the food and covered my nose with my hand as I felt nauseous.
âWhatâs that smell?â I pulled a disgusted face and stepped back.
âUhâ¦my cooking?â My mom spoke, offended. I had always loved her cooking, but today was clearly not her day. âI made you your favoriteâ¦spaghetti.â
I nearly gagged and covered my mouth. âI like burgers, and get that thing away from me!â
âExcuse me!â My mom shouted. I held up my hand to stop her from talking and rushed to the trashcan. Not even a second later, I couldnât hold it back any longer and threw up.
âHey!â Luke complained. âNow it does smell in hereâand itâs all because of you, Serena!â
He covered his plate while Carmen placed her hand on my momâs shoulder. âYour food tastes good, mom. It tastes wonderful.â
Isobel nodded. âCarmen is right, and my babies like it too.â
My mom rushed over to my side and rubbed her hand over my back. âThen whatâs the problem?â
She asked, worried.
âI donât know, mom.â
Thatâs what I would like to know.
âPregnancy hormones,â Carmen spoke with a full mouth. âSerena probably got knocked up again.â
I rolled my eyes at Carmen. âReally funny,â I spoke sarcastically.
âIâm good everyone, thanks for asking.â
