Chapter 225
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
âSo, how do I look?â Carmen showed off her dress. It was another boring day in the Alfonso household, with the only one keeping me company being my sister as Siena was asleep.
âCute.â I touched the ends of her dress. âSo what are you doing again?â
âI have a date with Kenzo?â Carmen smiled, proudly. âChristianâs cousin?â
âAh, Christianâs cousin,â I repeated with a deep sigh. I bet my dad would be happy to hear that since he was so fond of Christian. Note the sarcasm.
âCarmen, heâs a nice kidâbut I donât think thatâs very smart,â I told my sister, who shot me a glare.
âSo what?â She spoke. âYouâre the only one allowed to date a Lamberti?â
I shrugged off Carmenâs reaction as my mind went to Christian. Although we were doing great at the moment, being with him was anything but a fairytale that I wouldnât wish upon anyone. I couldnât wait to tell him about the pregnancy, but instead, I felt forced to keep my mouth shut so that he could concentrate on his uncle.
âHey!â Luke entered Carmenâs room. âWhatâs this thing Iâm hearing about you going on a date?â
âSheâs dating Christianâs cousin now.â I exposed Carmen, hoping he would speak some sense into her. âIs that true?â Luke looked at Carmen, demanding an answer.
Carmen pouted. âNot dating, weâre just talking!â
âIs there a difference?â I rolled my eyes. Luke folded his arms and released a deep sigh. âIâm not a fan of this idea.â He spoke, frustrated. âThis situation is getting on my nerves.â
See, so I wasnât crazy.
âLuke, donât worryâheâs a great guy.â Carmen defended her date.
âI know. Thatâs why this situation is getting on my nerves.â Luke scoffed. âHe deserves better than this ugly beast, isnât that rightâSerena?â
Stunned, I took in Lukeâs offensive words while Carmen let out a squeal. âIâm going to kill you!â She exclaimed before chasing him out of the room. Although they were pretty violent, their relationship never failed to make me laugh.
I often thought about how things couldâve been if Beau and I had grown up together. Would we be just as close as we were now, or would we be frenemies like Luke and Carmen?
With a smile on my face, I looked down at my stomach. How about Siena and her sibling?
Would they be close?
âSerena!â My mom called out. âChristianâs here!â
Shocked, I almost jumped up from the bed and rushed from the stairs. Christian? Was something wrong?
I took a quick look in the mirror and fixed my hair. âSerena, come onâyou want to hear this, trust me!â My mom yelled.
âComing!â I made my way into the living room. My mom and Christian stood next to each other with big smiles on their faces while a thousand thoughts went through my head. What was happening?
Did Beau spoil the pregnancy?
âHeâs awake,â Christian spoke.
Heâs awake? Was this some kind of riddle?
âVince?â Christian continued. âHeâs awake.â
âV-Vince is awake?â I stuttered. Christian nodded before pulling me into his arms. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I was still processing the news. Vince was back, and that was all I ever wanted. If this was a dream, I didnât want to wake up.
âYou guys should goâhe needs you. Iâll watch Siena!â My mom offered. It only took a second for Christian to grab my hand as he pulled me out of the house.
âWait, I donât have a jacket!â I spoke, startled. Christian took off his coat and wrapped it around my shoulders. âThere you go, letâs go!â
For some reason, the drive to the hospital seemed never-ending. I couldnât control myself as tears continued leaving my eyes. Even though I had always been hopeful, I could still not believe that this was real. Even though we hadnât known each other for a long time, we had an immediate connection. Vince was one of the few people who I could rely on.
âWhy are you crying?â Christian parked the car. I tried to end my tears by taking a deep breath, and wiped eyes, but they just wouldnât stop.
âIâm sorry, Iâm a mess.â
âDonât worry about it.â Christian turned to look at me. He brought his finger to my eyes and wiped away my remaining tears. âAre you sure youâre okay?â
âYesâ¦Iâm scared.â A peal of nervous laughter escaped from my lips. âI do want to visit him, but Iâm scared.â
âIt brings back a lot of memories, doesnât it?â
âYesâ¦â
I thought I was over the Fabio situation, but thinking about Vince made me realize that all of this was real. The kidnapping, the torture, all of it.
âYou donât have anything to worry aboutâ¦if anything, it should be me.â Christian mumbled. I wasnât the only one who had been through a lot.
âBecause you chose your brotherâs life over his?â
I would never forget the look in Christianâs eyes as he told me he saved Enzo while Vince who was in need of desperate help, stuck out his hand. Christian lowered his head.
âDoes he even want to see me?â
âOf course he will!â I encouraged him. âThe two of you are like a teamâ¦you go together like Adam and Eve, Romeo and Juliet, or salt and pepper!â
âThat doesnât even make sense.â Christian laughed. âLike everything else you say, but Iâm just going to pretend like I know what youâre talking about.â
I couldnât do a lot, but at least I could cheer him up.
âYou didnât do anything wrong, and Vince will understand,â I spoke. âI understand.â
âI hope youâre right.â Christian gave me a doubtful look. âThank you. I love you.â
âI know. I love you too,â I unbuckled my seatbelt in a hurry. âCome onâcheer up, we can do this!â
After a while, we ended up in the hallway, where Ramiro was already waiting for us. If anyone had been working extra hard, it was him.
âChristian, Serenaâyou are here!â He received us excitedly. âI called Vinceâs brother. He was out of town with Luisâbut theyâre on their way back here!â
âThatâs good.â Christian looked past Ramiro. âSo, where is Vince? Can we see him?â
My heart nearly stopped as I noticed Ramiroâs change of expression. One of my biggest nightmares was Vince not returning to his old self.
âW-whatâs wrong?â
âNothing. Vince is doing great.â Ramiro spoke calmly. âHeâs been through a lot. His body and brains arenât functioning as they shouldââ
âSo he will never be the same?â Christian wondered as I felt an uncomfortable lump in my throat.
Ramiro shook his head. âNo, thank godâno!â He reassured us. âIâm just saying that heâs not fully recovered yet, so you should give him some time.â
âGood.â Christian sighed, relieved. Vince was going to be okay.
âDoes he rememberâ¦what happened to him?â I carefully addressed the situation. âHe does,â
Ramiro confirmed before stepping aside. âLetâs go in.â
Christian, who was close to backing out, stepped back, forcing me to grab his hand. âStop being so overdramatic. You can do this.â
Ramiro opened the door, allowing us to enter, and for the first time in months, there was a clear movement in Vinceâs body. He slowly turned his head to look at us with an unreadable expression on his face.
âCome on. You can step closer.â Ramiro guided us. Christian and I shot each other a look before following his instructions.
Vince observed us and followed every movement. The Vince I knew wouldâve already been talking by now, but luckily Ramiro gave us a heads up. It would take some time.
âVince?â I whispered, leaning forward. He blinked his eyes as he followed the direction of my finger in a complete daze.
Christian held his hand against Vinceâs forehead. âIs he okay?â He asked. âIs this normal?â
Ramiro nodded. âHeâs doing fine, and everything is working correctly. Itâs a miracle, and we should be gratefulââ
âBut he canât walk, can he?â I interrupted him, still in disbelief. Vince was someone who enjoyed breathing and walking. He loved everything which had to do with outside, so not being able to walk would be as good as being dead to him.
âDonât say that. Vince will walk.â Christian pressed a kiss against his forehead. âHe will be okay.â
âOf course he will.â I smiled at his unexpected positivity.
âThereâs no reason for him not to walk, so donât you worry about that,â Ramiro informed us.
Vinceâs breathing got heavier by the second, making both Christian and I take a step back.
Frightened, I turned my head to look at Ramiro.
âItâs okay. Heâs just a bit overwhelmed.â He explained.
âIs it because of me?â Christian asked, startled. It was no secret he blamed himself for Vinceâs state while it could not have been prevented. âI guess heâs overwhelmed because he canât talk to us,â I concluded. I could see it in his eyes.
Vince used all his strength to stick out his fingers and murmured as he reached for my hand. âGo.â
Christian pushed me.
I accepted Vinceâs hand and felt relieved as a slight smile grew on his face. He wasnât looking at me. He was looking at Christian. I knew someone as kind-hearted as Vince wouldnât blame Christian and wanted him to know that. Thatâs the kind of person he was.
âI think he wants you to come over,â I spoke, pulling Christianâs hand.
âHeâs trying to say something, isnât he?â I asked Ramiro, who was also trying to figure out Vinceâs intentions. âI think he wants to know if the two of you are okay?â
âYes, yesâwe are!â I nodded at Vince. It wouldnât surprise me if he heard all my rants about Christianâand most of them werenât that good. âWeâre doing fine, and Siena is waiting to meet her uncle!â
Vince sighed after hearing Sienaâs name. He was so excited to meet her, and he missed all of it.
âHow long will it take for him to start talking again?â I asked Ramiro.
âNot long, heâs in a state of shockâbut heâs fine.â
âDo you hear that, Vince?â I gasped. âVince, weâve all been waiting for you.â I smiled. âYou didnât forget about me, right?â
Vince shook his head. âAnd you know who that is?â I looked at Christian. Vince nodded.
âL-Luis?â He spoke for the first time. The sound of his voice made me cover my mouth, as I tried to control myself. Crying in front of Vince wouldnât do any good.
âLuis will be here soon, so will your brotherâhe came back, and heâs been taking really good care of you!â Christian told him.
âBeau?â Vince widened his eyes. Christian squeezed his hand. âHeâll be here soon. Heâs on his way.â He spoke. âYes, you almost killed himâbut I think we can all move on from that.â
Unfortunately, Christian failed to read the embarrassed expression on Vinceâs face. He tied my brother to a chair, tortured himâand all while waiting for his dad to finish him off, and now he was scared to face the consequences.
âHeâs not angry with you, donât worry.â I caressed his cheek. âHe understandsâ¦we all understand why you did it.â
A smile appeared on Vinceâs lip, followed by a deep breath. âAnd what about us?â I asked. âAre you happy to see usâ
Vince nodded and moved his hand to Christianâs cheek. He gave him a slight pat and looked into his eyes. âSorry.â He whispered before turning his head in my direction. With trembling lips, I made eye contact with Vince. I was ready to break down any second.
âSorry.â His eyes filled with tears. This time I couldnât hold it any longer and broke down crying.
âPlease stop talking!â I sobbed, pulling him into a hug.
âAnd donât be sorry. You didnât do anything!â
âDidnât do anything, really?â Christian chuckled. âAnd you were calling me overdramatic.â
