Chapter 226
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
Serena âCan I hold her?â Vince used all of his strength to sit up straight. A few days had passed, and surprisingly enough, he was making quick progress.
That was the reason why I had decided to let him meet Siena officially. I placed Siena in his arms and watched as Siena snuggled against him. âI think she likes me!â Vince laughed proudly.
âI think she does.â I smiled back. She was familiar with Vince, which I wanted from the start. In a way, it was as if he had never left.
Although he was present as well, Christian returned to his duties, and all I wondered was whether he could keep his promise. Would this Berto situation really be over in a few days? Because it sure didnât look like it.
Vince had a lot of catching up, but it was a relief that we didnât have to tell him much about Berto or Lucio. According to him, he had heard everything.
âHow is the other baby doing?â Vince questioned. For a second, my eyes turned big before the realization finally hit me. Thatâs true. He heard everythingâincluding the news about my new pregnancy.
âI donât know,â I spoke, flustered. âI donât want to bother Christian, and I havenât really found the perfect opportunity to make an appointment.â
Vince nodded and looked down at Siena, who rested her hand on his chin. âThis little satan hit me...â He spoke. âI remember all of it.â
âYou do?â I asked, surprised, completely ignoring his nickname for Siena. Of course, he did. Vince threw back his head in laughter. âYes, and she punches like Christian!â He said. âShe got a lot of anger for a baby.â
Hearing that comparison was supposed to make me happy, but the truth was that I didnât want her to be like Christian. No, I wanted her to be Siena. I wanted her to have a normal childhood. Was I crazy for wanting that?
âI know Iâve said it countless of times already, but I really want to thank you and your family for everything youâve done for Luis.â Vince began. âHe looks so much more alive, healthy, happyâ¦itâs amazing.â
âIt is.â I agreed. âBut we couldnât have done it without your brother, Beau, and Isobel.â I acknowledged. âYour brother, Nic, took care of youâand Beau and Isobel did everything they could to make Luis happy.â
Vince scoffed. âMy brother.â He sighed. âIâm glad heâs back, but I canât believe our father had to die for it.â
I lowered my head, hoping he would drop the subject as I wasnât prepared to talk about Fabio.
Neither of us had addressed what had happened and mainly lived in the present. âSo it seems like Beau and Christian are pretty much inseparable?â
Vince had a jealous look in his eyes. âHe could be here visiting meâ¦but heâs working for Christian.â
He spoke. âNow that I think about itâ¦other than my family, Christian, and my brothersâ¦not a lot of people have visited me.â
âI can understand my fatherâs men because the Lambertiâs forced them to work for themâand they never really liked me anyway.â Vince began.
âBut Beau, Isobelâ¦â He started calling out endless names while I sat back uncomfortably. The truth was that one had betrayed him, and he had betrayed the other.
âIâm sure theyâre busy, just give them some time.â I opened my arms and pulled Vince into a hug.
âAnd donât worry about the other guys. They were all glad to hear youâre alrightâand they just wanted to give you some space to breathe!â
âOh, really?â Vince asked. âYes, really!â I reassured him. âBesides, you donât need anyone else besides meâ¦not anymore.â
âOkayâbut I think youâre squashing the baby.â Vince chuckled. He pushed me back gently and kissed Sienaâs head. âShe looks like you thoughâ¦thank god for that.â
âYes, thank god.â I snorted. âWhat on earth would we do if she ended up looking like Christian.â
I burst out in laughter while Vince reached for my hand. Shocked, I looked down at his warm hand and cleared my throat as Vince squeezed it.
Nope, I wasnât about to do this again. Dario was already more than enough, and I didnât want to deal with more misunderstandings. âJust so you know, Christian and I are doing fineâ¦I love Christian.â I said the last part loud enough as I didnât want to repeat myself.
âYes, I know.â Vince shrugged. A slight smirk appeared on his lips. âIâm rooting for you, always have.â
âIs that so?â
âYes,â Vince spoke. âAnd I know heâs done some stupid stuff, but Iâve never seen him this happy beforeâand he really does love you.â
âDoes he really?â I asked doubtfully. Vince hummed. âYes, and I had to hear about it for months.
Believe it or notâI was slowly getting sick of your name.â
âAnd I appreciate your company, but I think it might be better for you and Siena to lay low for a while,â Vince suggested. âAt least until everything is safe?â
âDid Christian put you up to this?â I asked, startled. I supposed everyone around here shared the same opinion. Vince shook his head.
âNo, but Iâm pretty sure he feels the same.â
âBut I want to stay hereâ¦with you,â I told him. At first, I was okay with the idea of laying low, but it was slowly becoming too much for me.
âI know, but you canât,â Vince said. âChristianâs uncleâ¦heâs crazy.â
âThanks for stating the obvious.â I chuckled. Unfortunately, that was something I had already figured out a long time ago. Vince looked at me with a guilty smile.
âI just want you to be safe.â He spoke. There was no doubt it mustâve been hard for him to push me away like this, and I knew he was doing it to protect meâbut what about what I wanted?
âTrust me, if Berto really wants to get meâheâll go to my house and get me,â I stated. âBesides, I have all these people protecting meâso donât worry about it!â
âI see.â Vince ended our discussion. âAlso, I know itâs not my placeâbut I think you need to tell Christian about the baby as soon as possible.â
âI do?â
âYes,â Vince stated. âI know you want to find a perfect moment, but itâs time for you to realize that this life isnât perfect.â
I followed Vince's eyes and looked through the glass window. Christian was having a conversation on his phone, and as always, it seemed pretty serious.
âMaybe you have a point,â I whispered in acknowledgment. This life wasnât perfect, and that was the reason why Vince spent months in a coma. If something were to happen to any of us, I would at least like for him to know the truth.
âYou know, Vince.â I took a breath. âIâm glad youâre backâ¦and I really missed your advice.â
Vince shrugged his shoulders. âWell, thatâs what Iâm here for.â He kissed Sienaâs cheek. Siena let out giggles and buried her face in his neck.
âI think you would make a great dad.â
âY-you think?â Vince blinked, confused. âI just woke up, and here you are telling me Iâd make a good dad!â
âYes, definitely,â I spoke. âI should hook you up with one of my friends!â
Vince winked. âUnless her name is Serena, I do not want to be with her.â He flirted shamelessly.
With flushed cheeks, I patted his shoulder and got up from the chair. âI do know one Serena, and sheâs hopelessly in love with Christianâso good luck with that one!â
âOh, wow.â Vince huffed. âDid you hear that, Siena?â
It was almost impressive how well he took rejection, but I was sincere. My heart only belonged to one man, and that was Christian.
âWait hereâIâm getting Christian,â I spoke. We came here to spend time with Vince, but as always, work got in the way of everything. âJust keep an eye on Siena for me.â
âDonât worry. Weâre getting along just fine.â Vince smiled at Siena. âGo and do your thing.â
I looked back one more time, but as expected, Siena was in good hands with Vinceâgiving me enough courage to leave the room. As I was about to call out Christianâs name, Marc approached him.
With a feeling of guilt washing over me, I hid behind the wall and did not make a single sound. I knew it was terrible to eavesdrop on his conversation, but I couldnât hide my curiosity.
I had to know the situation with Berto, and since no one was telling me anythingâI was forced to find out on my own.
