Chapter 229
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
A week had passed, and to be honestâour arrangement wasnât working. Somehow I always found myself home during the day and occasionally went back to my parents for the night.
I knew I didnât have much time left with Christian, so I grew attached to him more than ever. It was like I was desperate to be around him, but at the same time I wasnât.
After my endless pleads to meet up with Lucio, Christian ended his day early and had agreed to take me to the hospital. While he was working on whatever plan they had, I had already decided what my next step would be, and I felt guilty.
Everyone worked over hours to develop a plan to stop Berto, but I would make things easier for them.
âAre you sure you donât want me to join?â Christian asked. We looked through the glass and watched as Lucio waved at us to come inside.
âYes, you should spend some time with Vince, and Iâll stay with your dad!â
Although Luca had yet to text me, this would most likely be the last time to see Lucio. That man was so popular and received visits after visits, which was why I had asked for some alone time. I had to say my goodbyes.
Christian eyed me suspiciously. âWhatâs with that look on your face.â
âNothing,â I spoke. âWhatâs up with your face?â
âI canât believe you let your girl kick us out, just so that she can spend some alone time with dad!â
Gio approached us. He shot me a teasing glare and pushed my shoulder.
Who wouldâve thought we would be getting along the way we did? Gio, the same brother who couldnât stand me.
âYouâre not going to end dad with a pillow, are you?â Enzo added. Also, he came a long way. He came from wanting to eliminate not only me but Siena as well, to becoming the rock of the family.
âWith a pillow?â I squinted my eyes. âOf course not. Iâll just do it with my bare hands!â
I had expected the three brothers to laugh, but all I saw were shocked expressions. âGuys, Iâm kidding!â
Christian frowned. âAh, but can I still come with you?â He asked, worried. âPlease?â
Whenever I looked into his soft eyes, I just couldnât say no. Who was I to tell him that he couldnât see his dad?
âOkay.â I sighed. âWeâll go together.â
The two of us had barely entered before Lucio raised himself from his bed. âHey, Sereââ He went into a coughing fit.
Christian rushed over to his dadâs side and came to the rescue with a glass of water. âDad, donât ever do that again!â He scolded him.
Lucio grinned unbothered. âThank you.â He moved his eyes to mine. âSerena, I missed you!â
I stepped closer and grabbed his hands. He still had the same kind eyes, but he was not the same healthy man as before. His health had declined, and he had gotten skinnier. I could barely recognize him.
âI missed you too, Lucio.â I kissed his forehead.
âWhere is Siena?â
âMom is watching her,â Christian told him. âSheâs having the time of her life.â
âI see.â Lucio sulked. He had always cared for all of his grandchildren and loved spending time with them.
Lucio changed the subject. âHave you seen my customized casket?â
Customized casket?
âDad.â The look on Christianâs face had changed. âCome on, not now.â He whispered. While Lucio accepted the situation, Christian couldnât.
I hated leaving him at the most vulnerable time in his life, but I had no choice. He would eventually get over it, right?
âWhy canât I tell Serena about my casket?â Lucio said, startled. âWe all know Iâm dying!â He laughed before letting out several coughs.
Christian caressed his hand over his back and looked at me with an apologetic smile on his lips.
âIâm sorry.â
âItâs okay. Your dad is right.â I spoke. âI donât mind.â
âYou see?â Lucio grabbed my hand and connected it with Christianâs.
âSonââ
âIf youâre going to give me another speech about how I should run the family business, you should drop it.â Christian interrupted his dad.
Lucio shook his head. âNo, itâs not about that.â He rolled his eyes. âI want you to promise me to take care of Serena, and donât you ever let go of her.â
Christian looked into my eyes. âI wonât.â
I wish I could say the same.
âAnd donât make the poor girl wait. Marry her!â Lucio forced him. Christian rubbed his thumb over the ring on my finger.
âI will.â
âCreate a big family and give all of them the same attention.â
âIâll try.â
Surprisingly enough, Lucio had enough energy to talk about his casket but had not mentioned Berto.
âAnd you, Serena.â Lucio turned to me. âI havenât always been good to you. I lied to you about your parents. I let you work at aâ¦strip club, and for that, Iâm so sorryââ
âDonât apologize!â I stopped him. Whatever he had to say, I didnât want to hear it. âIf it werenât for you, I wouldâve not met Christian or my parents.â
âSo you listen to me.â I began. âI never got to chance to thank you for all youâve done for me,â I spoke. âDuring those times at the club, I never knew what having a father felt like until you became one to me.â
âAnd Iâm so grateful to have two dads.â
âSerenaâ¦â Lucio released a tear at my heartfelt words, not knowing this would be my final goodbye to him.
As expected, Christian wiped Lucioâs tears and pulled him into a tight hug. âSerena is really sorry for making you cry.â Christian spoke for me.
I frowned, confused. âI never said thatâ¦â
After spending the day with Lucio, we headed to the Lamberti estate to pick up Siena. Even someone like Cesca or Christianâs grandpa, who was also not that fond of me, deserved a proper goodbye.
How would they feel about all of this? Thatâs what they wanted, right?
I had always blamed my parents for leaving me, but I could finally understand their decision. They were willing to do anything to protect the lives of many, even if that meant making the ultimate sacrifice.
I could see Christian staring at me out of the corner of my eye.
âEyes on the roadâ¦please,â I told him. I didnât want him to notice something was wrong. He would lose it if he knew about my plan.
âIâm sorry.â Christian laughed. âI just keep staring at you because I truly canât believe how I got this lucky.â
He had been in a good mood all week, which was all I used to ask for. The only bad thing was the timing.
âSerena, youâve been like for days, and if something is wrong, you have to tell me.â
âIâm fineââ
âDid I do something wrong?â
âNo!â I spoke, frustrated. âI donât know what youâre talking aboutâ¦so just leave it.â
âI canât just leave it,â Christian spoke. âI need you to talk to me, so I can fix this!â
âStop it. Youâre scaring me.â
âWhy?â
âBecause youâre being nice!â I snapped. âYou canât just suddenly care and treat me well whenever it suits you!â
What was wrong with me?
Why was I trying to create issues which werenât even there?
Were these pregnancy hormones or fear?
I took a deep breath. âI didnât mean it like that. Iâm sorry.â
Christian chuckled. âNo, Iâm sorry.â He spoke sarcastically. âIâm sorry for trying.â
For the remaining drive, Christian had kept quiet, and I could not tell whether I had offended him. It wasnât my intention to ruin the mood, but at the same time, I just didnât want to give him any false hope.
He grabbed my hand without giving me as much as a look as he led me to the doors of the Lamberti estate.
âWait.â I pulled him back before we could reach the door. âIâm sorry.â
âWhat are you sorry for?â Christian surprised me with his question. I wanted to tell him the truth, I wanted to tell him I was sorry for leaving him, for not being able to give him the family he wantedâ
but I couldnât. He would never understand.
What are you sorry for? That was the same question I used to ask him over and over again. Was this how he felt?
âExactly.â Christian snarled. âYou donât even know what youâre apologizing for, so drop it and let it go.â He spoke. âWe canât be like this around Sienaââ
âSiena, mommy and daddy are back!â The door flew open in our faces. Cesca held a cheerful Siena in her arms.
I fixed the dull expression on my face and smiled as Siena had immediately stretched out her arms to Christian. She would be in good hands.
âI missed you!â Christian attacked her with kisses, making her giggle. âGive mommy a kiss!â He pressed Sienaâs lips against my cheek and pulled us into a hug.
âLook at you two!â Cesca pulled us inside. âI donât want Siena to freeze, and I think she needs a diaper change.â
âIâll do it!â Christian offered. He walked away with Siena and threw her in the air. The only thing that worried me was his rough ways of playing around with her.
It seemed like he was willing to do anything to get away from me for a second, and I couldnât blame him. I deserved it.
âHey.â Cesca greeted me after Christian was out of sight.
I was still uncomfortable around her because I knew she wasnât the biggest fan of me. She would probably even hate me even more for what I was about to do.
âHey.â I nodded back. âThank you. I really appreciate your help.â
âDonât ever thank me for watching my granddaughter!â She spoke hysterically. âSiena and I had a great time, and you can bring her over whenever you feel like it.â
âShouldnât you be with Lucio?â I questioned, thinking she might like to be there while she still could.
Cesca sighed at me with watery eyes and shrugged her shoulders.
Why was I even asking this woman about her dying husband? That was none of my business.
âIâm sorry, I didnât mean to.â
âPlease donât apologize.â Cesca placed her hand on my shoulder. âI get so emotional just by thinking about him because heâs so stubborn.â She smiled.
âHe keeps talking about his casket, what food should be served, the music, the peopleâ¦and I just canât take it anymore,â She confessed. âI canât.â
The two had been married for years, and I remember thinking Christian and I would be the same. A dream team.
âSerena, Christian will be having a hard time, and he will not know how to handle the loss of his father.â Cesca softened her look.
âIâm so grateful he has someone like you. Someone who will be there when he needs it.â
Before I could take in Cescaâs words, I stared at the notification on my phone and read Lucaâs name.
Luca:
Four days from now. 8 PM.
Iâll send you the location.
Donât bring anything with you, just be there!
So it had been taken care of.
âRight, Serena?â Cesca pushed for an answer. I hid my phone behind my back and smiled in her face as if I wouldnât be betraying her son.
âRight.â
