Chapter 287
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
Marvin Today was Anyaâs funeral, and it pained me to know that I couldnât even be there. She was a good person with a good heart and had a long life ahead of her.
A part of me felt guilty for obeying my dadâs wishes, but more so for planning on seeing not only Daniel Stanfield but also Elena today.
âI thought I told you to stay out of trouble.â
I laughed at the familiar voice and raised my hand to greet Daniel. He had a bouquet in his hands and wore his rare everyday clothes.
Seeing him in something other than a uniform was refreshing for a change. âHow can I stay out of trouble if others wonât let me?â
Daniel chuckled as he placed the flowers on the nightstand. âThatâs true.â
âSo I heard you called for me.â He spoke, sitting down. âAlthough you were my favorite inmate, I hope you know Iâm risking a lot by just coming here.â
âThen why did you?â
Daniel grew an embarrassed smile on his lips and shrugged his shoulders. He came here because he owed it to me. We both knew that. âSo, what can I do for you, Marvin?â
âIâm not going to waste any time. I heard Danny Hernandez is in your unit-
âOh, no, no, no!â Daniel argued. âI donât know whatâs going on with this Hernandez versus Castillo beef, but I have a family-so Iâm staying out of it.â
âSo heâs in your unit?â I played with the string in my hands, ignoring his words. Perhaps these were the words of a spoiled little kid, but I didnât take rejection very well. Daniel, who clearly felt pressured, took a long sip from his water bottle and wiped his forehead. âI knew coming here was a bad idea.â He muttered under his breath.
âWhat do you want, Marvin?â
I thought back on my time in prison and the Castilloâs who stood behind me. To execute my plan, I needed someone I could trust and someone willing to do anything. âI want you to tell me which of the Castillo men seems the most trustworthy.â
âCastillo men?â Daniel scoffed. âYou have no shame, discussing this with a prison guard.â
âAs far as Iâm concerned, youâre not wearing your uniform,â I remarked. Unfortunately, Daniel had a lot to say. âListen, I know you care a lot about your familyâ¦your wife Melany, and your three children?â
Daniel widened his eyes in surprise. âAre you threatening me?â He asked with trembling lips. I felt bad it had to go this far, but I didnât have a choice. My position as heir was on the line, and I had to act quickly. This plan couldnât fail. âNo, never.â I made it clear.
âIâm just giving you the opportunity to take care of your family, thatâs all.â
Daniel released a sigh. âManny Cheâs the most loyal.â He suggested. âThat man would lick your butt crack if he had to.â
âManny C?â I repeated, thinking about the newbie who was pretty much glued to my side to the point his presence used to annoy me. I reached for the envelope on the nightstand and handed it to Daniel. It was the envelope which I had prepared the day prior. âIn that case, I need you to give it to him.â
âWhatâs in this?â Daniel asked, frowning at the paper in his hands.
âItâs not meant for your eyes. All you have to do is deliver it-and Iâll give you a big reward.â
âWhat happens if I open it?â
Too many questionsâ¦.
âThen I would, unfortunately, have to kill you,â I spoke, ending the discussion as soon as it started.
The complexion of Danielâs face paled as he took in my threat.
âIâm just kidding. Whatâs up with the face?â I spoke after noticing the poor man was close to fainting.
Daniel laughed, relieved. âYouâre quite the comedian, arenât you?â
I tried to be, but I was not in any position to make jokes. It was time to become serious.
âIâm sorry about your sister-in-law.â Daniel showed his sympathy. If anyone was supposed to be sorry, it had to be me. I was so put on going to Tiagoâs wedding, despite knowing the risks, and I had failed to protect everyone.
I was so deeply in denial that I even tried to convince myself that it couldnât have been the Hernandez, but this time I was going to fix everything.
âYes, me too,â I said. âI am also sorry.â
Surprisingly Daniel stayed with me for several hours and kept me company until it was time for him to get back to his duties. Correctional officer or not, it felt nice to talk to someone normal for a change. Perhaps thatâs why I enjoyed talking to Elena.
Now would be the right time to see her again.
I grew a smile just by thinking about her and looked through the glass window to make eye contact with Panther. Unfortunately, my eyes locked with Victor, who raised his hand to greet me and barged through the door without an invitation.
âSo the rumors are true, youâre a thing with the prison guard?â Victor commented, letting the door slam behind him. The pain I had was already enough, and looking at Victorâs face was not exactly the best medicine.
âWhat do you want, Victor?â I almost growled. If there was one thing I was good at, it had to be holding grudges, and I would never forget the last words which had left his mouth. I will never forget how he worried more about Marioâs acceptance than my life.
Victor shrugged. âIâm here to check up on my brother.â
Liar.
âAs you can tell, Iâm alive. So you can go,â I told him, pointing to the door. Victor ignored my request and stepped closer. âI was expecting something like, thank you for protecting Tiago when I couldnât.â
âThank you for protecting Tiago?â I said, shocked. âWe have lost Tiago the moment weâve lost Anya.
You know that!â
Victor chuckled. âThatâs true. He didnât even come to visit.â He recalled. âDo you know what his reaction was when I told him you were awake?â
âNo?â
My eyes moved to the mocking grin on Victorâs lips. âHe said,to?â
My heart dropped after learning of my brotherâs words. I couldnât blame him, and I understood that Anya was his priority at the moment-but someone like Victor wasnât able to understand. Someone like Victor only cared for commotion and enjoyed pitting two brothers against each other.
He twisted Danielâs yellow flowers between his fingers, waiting for me to react, but I wouldnât give him the satisfaction. Not today.
âCan I ask you something?â
Victor turned around. âAsk away?â
âWhy are you still here?â
The mixture of Victorâs shocked and offended expression on his face was a delightful sight. It was time for him to realize that I wouldnât play along with his game. Victorâs hands trembled in anger, as did his lips.
âIâm the only brother who-
âYouâre not my brother,â I spoke loud and clear. He was not my brother, and he would never be my brother. âYou might be a roach who has forced himself into this family-but you are not my brother.ââ
A breath escaped from Victorâs lips as he held the wall for support. âAnd Panther is?â
I followed Victorâs eyes and looked through the glass window, only to find Panther with my sister Karina, and my nephew, Cisco. Of course, Panther was family. He was one of the few who was able to get through my stubborn sister.
âI donât think Karina and Panther are allowed to call each other brother and sister.â Victor cackled.
âSo how is your search for Ciscoâs dad going?â
I stared at him with a puzzled look on my face, demanding answers. What was that even supposed to mean?
Desperate enough, I had almost reached out my hand to stop Victor, who was already at the door.
âIâm heading out to do something youâre not capable of doing, taking care of the family business.â
He announced. âGood day, brother.â
While my mind was still by Victorâs words, Panther entered the room with a bright smile on his face. Why was he smiling? Did it had something to do with what Victor said?
Why couldnât Karina and Panther be siblings?
Why would he start about Ciscoâs dad?
Was I overanalyzing things again?
âWhat did he want?â Panther interrupted my thoughts. My mouth felt dry, just by thinking of the thought of Panther keeping something from me, but then I remembered that it was all Victorâs plan.
This was what he wanted, and that man was known for his lies.
Panther wouldnât betray me, not him.
âItâs nothing.â
âDid he say something?â Panther continued. If anything, he was making himself look suspicious.
âNo.â
âDid I do something?â
âNo.â
Panther seemed relieved with my answer. âOh, okay.â He smiled while I was left to wonder whether there was something behind that look on his face.
âThe girl? I need you to bring her here.â
âElena? Now?â Panther asked, startled. I tried my hardest to let go of my doubts and took a breath.
âYes, now.â I nodded. âI appreciate you being her pen pal for the last few days, but I think itâs time for me to take over from here.â
