Chapter 306
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
After an unexpected phone call from George Torres, I couldnât help but rush to his house. Were we finally working on our plan to take down my number one enemy,Mario Castillo?
I had waited long enough, and not to forget-I had even packed his daughterâs suitcases, folded every single piece of clothing to perfection.
âSo youâre the prick who got my baby sister kicked out of the house.â A man I recognized as Alex Torres leaned against the door, waiting for my arrival. I could already tell that he was going to be a difficult one.
âLucas Nunes, I donât think weâve met.â I stuck out my hand. It wasnât my intention to let Elena get kicked out of the house, but I needed a strong ally to take down Mario Castillo, and I did not have a choice. I followed Georgeâs orders, and that was all.
Alex scoffed at my hand while I shrugged my shoulders and moved it behind my back. Someone as sensitive as Alex couldnât understand, but technically his baby sisterâwasnât all that better. She was involved with a Castillo.
âWill you take responsibility if something happens to her?â Alex glared at me. âWill you take responsibility for my dadâs episodes?â
What did any of that have to do with me? I only came here with one goal, and I was going to succeed-no matter what.
âNice to meet you too.â I chuckled as I brushed through Alex to force my way inside. He was not going to intimidate me.
âLucas, is that you?â
I followed Georgeâs voice. âGeorge?â
âIn here, son!â
Curious, I made my way to the living room and looked at the blue decorations. I had no idea. what was going on, but there were balloons and cake. Was it someoneâs birthday?
âWhatâs with the balloons?â
George walked up to me with a bright smile on his lips and forced a party hat onto my head.
âItâs for you. Today weâre celebrating!â He spoke, sticking a party horn into my mouth.
Wasnât this a bit too much?
âAnd now you have to face the consequences for your actions,â Alex whispered, walking past me.
He patted my shoulder and sat down on the sofa.
âCelebrating what?â
George paced back and forth as he clapped his hands. This man was so out of it, but it was just something I had to deal with. George Torres was the best, and I needed to work with the best.
âWeâre celebrating your return to the Castillo household.â
âM-my return? Iâve never been there before.â I spoke, shocked.Whatever he thought he had planned, it wasnât going to happen.
âOh yes, you will.â Alex chuckled. âAnd you will keep an eye on Elena as well.â
Elena?
âIs she there?â I asked. âHow do you even know that?â
âI put a tracker in her phone.â Alex admitted shamelessly. âI never really used it, up until now.â
I was no saint as I was the one who had actually followed her around, but a tracker in a grown womanâs phone? What was wrong with these people?
âOkay, the two of you are sick,â I stated. âAll I want is to take down Mario Castilloââ
âAnd you will!â George cut me off. âLucas, think about it. We have a way to get inside of the house, grab all the information we need-and start a case!â
After giving it a second thought, Georgeâs words werenât all that crazy. Having someone inside the mansion would make things so much easier. All we had to do was collect evidence, and that was it.
âSo what do you want me to do, just go there and tell him Iâm his long-lost son?â I questioned.
âAre we forgetting that Iâm an officer? He wonât even accept me-â
âHe will,â George argued. âBecause you will tell him the truth, and youâll be the perfect son and spy!â
Yes, by risking my life. Being a pawn in Georgeâs game was not what I had planned, and it was certainly not what I wanted. Mario Castillo was not and would not be a father to me. He was the man who had kicked out my mother and left her without a single penny. He was the main reason for her addiction because she could never get over him.I didnât want anything to do with that man.
Alex coughed for my attention. âFor someone who claims to be so desperate to take down Mario Castillo, I canât really see it.â
He was right.
âThis is crazy,â I whispered as I took a deep breath. âFine, Iâll do it.â
âYouâll do it?â
George opened his arms and pulled me in a bone-cracking embrace. âDid you hear that, Alex? We might stop the Castilloâs sooner than expected!â
âIâm aware, dad,â Alex spoke, unbothered. âIâm just happy he can keep an eye on Elena.â
George smiled. âI might get my daughter back!â
After that comment, the room went silent. If there was one praiseworthy thing about George, it had to be his love for children. Thatâs what all the guys at the station said.
At the same time, I could also see that he was a stubborn man who didnât bow down to anyone, including his daughter. It was clear he regretted his actions but did not know how to show his feelings. I knew it was none of my business, but I could not help but wonder what went down that day.
âLetâs have some cake and get you started.â George pulled out a whiteboard. The board was full of pictures, notes, and connected lines.
âDamn, you really thought this through-didnât you?â
âThese people know you as an officer.ââ George nodded. âIf youâre going to do this, you need to get your story straight.â
And that was exactly what I ended up doing, as George had been preparing me for my big reveal in the past few days.
After several nights of hard work, I had finally reached the end of my training, and George and Alex had prepared me for my big return. Just to make sure there werenât any misunderstandings, George had planned a final quiz.
âThe most important thing is?â
âTo not get fooled by Mario or his kindness.â
âHow will you inform me about your findings?â
âWrite it down on a paper, and leave it behind at a spot-because they will be keeping a close.
eye on me.â
âHave you already thought of something?â George asked. âA place you feel most comfortable.â
âYesâ¦.my momâs grave,â I spoke. George gave me an understanding nod. They could follow me around all they wanted, but no one would suspect a son visiting his momâs grave.
âWhat is your goal?â
âTo find something to put down the Castilloâs, find evidence on Marvin for Maddens death. and to look out for your daughter.â
Last but not least, find out why Mario Castillo wasnât man enough to take care of my mother.
âWho should you keep your distance from?â
âLinda, because she most likely doesnât want me there, and Victor-because he sees everyone as a threat.â I reminded myself. Linda had three children and would probably not be too happy with my existence or her husbandâs betrayal. Victor, who had lost his parents at a young age-had the brains of a little boy who was incapable of sharing.
âWho are the vulnerable idiots who will surely open their mouths?â
âTiago, who might blame his family for Anyaâs death, and Karina, who does not know left. from right,â I spoke. If anyone was willing to give me free information, it had to be one of those two.
âAnd how do you befriend Marvin?â
âThrough Pedro Vidal, because Marvin is a private person who likes to keep his circle small, and an introvert.â
Building a bond with Marvin would not be that easy, but according to my research, Pedro Vidal was another case. He was an outgoing person who was easy to befriend, which would work to my advantage..
âYouâre forgetting one thing.â Alex jumped in. He leaned his hands on the table and shot me an intimidating look. âNo, Iâm not.â I shook my head..
âThe last thing is to keep Elenaâs identity a secret, no matter what happens-â
âBecause she wouldnât even be alive if the Castilloâs would find out who she really was.â George closed his eyes. He balled his fist in anger. âTheyâve managed to steal away my only daughter, but mark my words-I will get her back.â
George having the power to fight for his stupid, naive daughter was something I couldnât speak on.
She was not held at gunpoint, and living with the Castilloâs was her own choice. She could drop dead tomorrow, and I wouldnât give a shit-but if I had to protect her for George to help me, so be it.
âSo, how did I do?â I asked. âDo you think Iâm ready?â
George chuckled. âI think youâre ready to meet your father.â
