Chapter 316
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
I walked into a completely dark house. Other than the guards on duty, even the maids were asleep, but it was past midnight, so that wasnât too crazy.
Marvin wasnât at home, which made the house feel even more empty. Although it was too bad, it wasnât that difficult to get used to-because my dad and Alex had always been workaholics.
I made my way to my room and took a deep breath as I fell to the bed. Work was not that tiring, but I couldnât say the same about Rona. The bar was not doing well, and honestly-it would be shocking if the bar would still be standing at the end of the week.
It seemed like rest wasnât a part of my routine anymore because my next thought went to Marvin.
He said he wanted to be honest with me. He asked me to spend the day together-and I still had no idea where all of this was going. Tomorrow would be interesting.
Was he going to confess his feelings?
Was he going to tell me the truth about his family?
Was I crazy for hoping he wouldnât tell me the truth about his family?
Yes, I wanted Marvin, and after giving it a second thought, I did want to go on a date with him-but I did not want to lie to him.
There was always this small part of me fearing for his reaction. I wasnât the daughter of a random cop, I was the daughter of a DEA agent. There was no way in hell he was going to accept that.
Why does life have to be so complicated?
I opened my eyes and yawned as my sleep got interrupted by the sound of footsteps near my bed.
Who would even make that much noise in the morning?
Startled, I let out a yell as an unknown girl looked right into my eyes. To my surprise, she yelled back- while she was the one in my territory.
âWhy are you yelling?â I spoke, confused. âYouâre in my room!â
The girl moved her brown strands of hair to the side, allowing me to get a better look at her face.I hadnât seen her before.âIâm sorry, Iâm sorry!â She giggled.
âIâm sorry, who are you?â
She stuck out her hand. âAmelia, at your service!â
âAmelia?â
âYes.â
âOkay?â I frowned, still confused about what she was doing in my room. âThanks for introducing yourself,â I spoke awkwardly.
âIâm twenty years old, a Gemini. I can clean your room, fold your clothes, keep you company, carry you on my back, and Iâll even crawl if you want me to.â Amelia gave me a thumbs up.
She seemed to have a lot of energy, which was strange coming from my mouth. Even then, it was nice to have someone in the house who could match my level of energy.
âWhereâs Marvin?â I rubbed my eyes and stretched out my arms. If he was not downstairs but at work, because he somehow decided to bail on me-I would kill him.
Amelia gasped. âOh, big brother?â
âMarvin?â I asked again. Since when did he have another sister? Was she also one of Mario Castilloâs bastards, which I wasnât aware of?
âMarvin is in the kitchen,â Amelia told me. âHeâs waiting for you.â
âThanks.â
Only now had I noticed the mid-sized box in her hands. âWhatâs with the box?â I wondered.
âItâs your outfit for your date tonight!â
So it was indeed a date.
âDonât worry, I picked it out, and itâs really cute!â Amelia reassured me. As long as it wasnât a dress or ten- inch heels, I had nothing to complain about.Less work for me.
âWait a minute-how do you know my size?â
âApparently the maids tell Marvin everything!â
âOkay, not creepy at all.â I scratched my head. It was a good thing to know these maids were all up in my business as well.
âThanks for your help, Amy.â I thanked my new ally. âItâs good to have someone my age in this house.â I sighed. âThe other maids are boring, Panther is annoying, and Marvin is ugly.â
Amy had a confused look on her face. âIâd give Marvin a solid eight out of ten.â
âI know, and itâs actually ten out of ten.â I got up from the bed. âI was just trying to be funny, but I donât think weâve got the same sense of humor.â
âI should definitely brush my teeth before going to the kitchen. I donât want to kill anyone.â I attempted to make another joke. âSo if you donât mindâ¦â
âNo, of course not. Iâll go!â Amy nodded, before leaving my room. After making myself a bit more decent- looking, I made my way downstairs and walked to the kitchen. I could hardly believe my eyes as I stared at the surprise in front of me.
Marvin was making breakfast?
Good morning?â I took in the amazing smell of the food. Marvin turned around to face me, and as always, I was blinded by his handsomeness. Unlike yesterday, he was dressed a bit more casually.
âFinally, youâre up!â He pulled out a chair for me. I couldnât help but admire all the dishes on the table and even felt a bit embarrassed. Was he trying to outdo me?
âDid you make all of this?â
âYes,â Marvin spoke proudly. âI hope youâre hungry because I worked really hard on this.â
+5 Bonus For some reason, he seemed a bit different today. The Marvin in front of me was not confident but a bit anxious and perhaps a little shy.
âIâm hungry, and all of this looks really good!â
âGood.â Marvin released a breath. He grabbed a plate and filled it with food. âSoâ¦the girl-
âAmelia?â
âYes, her.â
If she hadnât addressed him as her big brother, I wouldâve been jealous because that was the kind of person I was. Still, he could not blame me for being curious.
âSheâs a new maid,â Marvin informed me. âIf you need anything, just ask her.â
âI know. She even crawls.â I snorted, still in disbelief that there was actually someone weirder than me.
âI think I missed that part.â Marvin laughed along as he handed me my plate.
âDid she give you the box?â
âFor ourâ¦date?â I blushed. I thought he wouldâve corrected me, but he didnât. That was a good sign.
âThanks for the outfit!â I gushed. âI havenât seen it yet, so it might as well be ugly-but still, thank you!â
âYou donât have to thank me.â Marvin winked. If there was one thing he was not afraid of, it had to be eye contact, but I was not the one to lose a challenge-so I stared back into his eyes.
The moment Marvinâs lip curled into a perfect smile, I panicked and did not know what to do Maybe I wasnât up for this challenge.
âYour eyes are beautiful,â I spoke. Was this really the best I could do?
âThanks.â
For some reason, Marvin was still staring at me. If he would stare any longer, I bet he could even find my pimples if I had them. âSoâ¦.beautiful eyes,â I repeated, nervously. âSometimes theyâre brown, sometimes theyâre green, sometimes yellow-â
Yes, this wasnât going anywhere.
Marvin laughed at me while I moved back, embarrassed. âYou sound silly. My eyes are brown.â He mocked me. Well, this was embarrassing.
âI know.â
âCute, but silly,â Marvin spoke.
I couldnât handle any more embarrassment and felt eager to change the subject, so I moved my eyes to the food and opened my mouth.
âYour mouth is open.â Marvin commented. Yes, thanks for stating the obvious.
âYes, arenât you going to feed me?â I closed it again.
âAh, because you fed me yesterday?â He shot me an understanding smile. I gave him a confident nod and leaned into the spoon so he could give me a bite.
âThis is good!â
For a second, my heart stopped beating as Marvin leaned in closer and rested his hand on my cheek. What was he doing?
âSo you had low expectations?â
âYes.â I gulped, swallowing my food. I was supposed to intimidate him. It should not be the other way around.
âIâm sorry, Iâm not wearing any makeup!â I blurted-way to go, Elena.
It was a good thing Marvin could appreciate my clumsiness. âI can tell. Youâre a bit of a catfish.â He squinted his eyes. That was a joke. That had to be a joke.
âDo you really think so?â I pouted, nudging his shoulder. Marvin chuckled, shaking his head.
âNoâ¦I think youâre beautiful.â
Beautiful?
âThank you.â I blushed. Marvin blinked his eyes and cleared his throat. It took me a second before I could finally understand his intentions.
âYouâre handsome.â I gave him a compliment in return. It was not a lie.Amy was out of her mind because there was no way Marvin was just an eight out of ten. Impossible.
âWhat are you thinking about?â Marvin woke me up from my thoughts. âOr whoâ¦.â He continued.
âItâs me right?â
I opened my mouth to answer his bold question, but I couldnât find the words. What was this sudden change of behavior?
âLLâ
âWhatâs up, love birds!â Panther saved me from disaster. Marvin pulled away quickly and moved his chair as if he had just committed a crime. He was so confusing âI made breakfast if youâd like some!â
Panther glared at us, disgusted. âHow are the maids going to get paid if the two of you keep making each other breakfast?â
Marvin scoffed. âYouâre not obligated to eat. You can alsoâ¦I donât know, not eat?â
âAnd do what? Let good food go to waste?â
Panther grabbed a plate and joined us. âMarvin took a day off to spend time with you!â He announced for the entire world to hear.
âThank you.â I smiled at Marvin. Panther yawned loudly. âNo, I should thank you-because that means I have the day off as well!â
As long as he was not joining us.
âSo, where do you want to go shopping?â Marvin ignored Panther as he should. âJust you and me this time.â
He looked guilty, meaning he mustâve noticed the dismayed look on my face.It wasnât his fault. What else could he do about Pantherâs presence?
âI donât really care, as long as we can swipe your card.â I shrugged nonchalantly.
Panter almost choked in his drink. âWatch out, Marvin!â He shouted. âThis one is not wasting any time. A gold-digger at heart!â
âI was just kidding!â I defended myself. That comment did hurt me as I didnât want anyone to misunderstand my intentions. Marvin didnât pay much attention to Pantherâs words. âIâm not a gold-
digger. I have a job.â I whispered.
âThatâs what they all say.â Panther grinned.
This time Marvin jumped in and threw a piece of fruit to his head. âPedro, thatâs enough. Stop it.â
âAlright, Iâm sorry-Elena.â Panther chuckled. I was touched by Marvin as he couldâve laughed along with Panther, but he didnât.He decided to stick up for me instead Speaking of jobs, how was work yesterday?â Panther asked.
Work? That was not something I felt like discussing. It would only be a matter of time before I wouldnât even have a job anymore.
âI donât want to talk about it.â I managed to get out. Marvin had a worried look on his face, while Pantherâs expression was full of curiosity.
âDid you get into trouble?â Panther wondered.
âUhâ¦â I fumbled with my napkin. I bet this was not a good time to tell them about the bar.
âYou did, didnât you?â Panther demanded an answer. For a split second, I looked at Marvin but quickly turned my head after seeing the angry look in his eyes.
âShe said she doesnât want to talk about it.â Marvin scolded his friend. âCome on, man. Stop it.
âMarvin, itâs okay.â I planted a smile on my lips. Who would break up their fight after Marvin would beat the crap out of him?Because it wouldnât be me.
âNo, itâs time for him to respect peopleâs boundaries,â Marvin spoke, irritated. âItâs not okay. Enough is enough.â
Panther threw back his head and burst into a loud, ringing fit of laughter. âIâm just playing with you, Elena.â He got up from the chair and patted Marvinâs shoulder. âI just like getting on his nerves.â
âThe way he cares about youâ¦.itâs crazy.â I heard him mutter as he left the room. âI think heâll even kill for you, Jesus.â
I didnât know whether to celebrate that Marvin cared for me, or to fear his best friend claiming he would actually kill for me. Would he?
Marvin glared at the door until the very second Panther was out of sight. âIf he ever makes you feel uncomfortable, just tell me-and Iâll kill him if thatâs what he wants.â
I froze for a second. Unfortunately, I could not tell the difference between a serious threat and a joke, considering Marvin was actually capable of killing him.Oh my god, would that make me an accessory to murder?
âHow about I eat my breakfast so that we can get out of here?â I stuffed my mouth with food, eager to leave this place.
âDeal.â
