Chapter 327
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
Elena âWhoâs there?â
I planted a smile on my lips and brushed my hair to the side. âItâs me, Elena!â I smiled at the security camera.
It was a long time since I had seen Victoria, and I wanted her to know that I was doing completely fine without her. Well, except for the part where I needed her assistance to access Anyaâs evidence.
âDoorâs open!â
I entered the apartment and cleared my throat as Victoria leaned against the wall with a smug smirk on her lips. âWhereâs your boy toy?â She folded her arms. âOr wait, he canât know about me, of course- because your entire life is based on a lie-â
âVictoria, please.â I rolled my eyes. âI come in peace.â
We stared at each other for a few more seconds before she flew into my arms. âI missed you so much!â She cooed. âPlease donât worry me like that ever again.
âCome on, let me look at you!â She rested her hands on my shoulders. I knew she thought I wasnât in the right state of mind, and I knew she pitied me-but I didnât care. It didnât have to be a bad thing.
âYou look skinnier.â
âDo I?â
âYes, are these people even feeding you?â
âYes?â I walked past Victoria and took a seat on her comfortable sofa. I had really missed this.
âSo, how is life?â Victoria joined me. For the first time in weeks, I took a good look at my friend and noticed how much she had changed. Her platinum blonde hair fell perfectly over her shoulders and was straightened to perfection.
âGood.â
âYeah?â She seemed doubtful. âAnd how isâ¦Marvin?â
âGood.â I nodded a bit too enthusiastically. âHeâs good weâre good.â
âAnd is he treating you well?â She continued her interrogation. I gave her a nod.
âYou know, your dad and Alex really miss you.â Victoria vouched for them. âIf you donât want to be friends with me, thatâs okay-but you should never let go of family for a guyâ¦a criminal above all.â
Our dads were close, so of course, she would choose his side. No one could understand my feelings because no one was willing to listen. At least they didnât ran to the Castilloâs to tell them about my family history.
âMy dad almost hit me, Victoria!â I stated. âHe really took it too far this time.â
âI know. Iâm sorry.â Victoria sighed. âGeorge shouldnât have done that.â She agreed. âBut someone like Marvin could also really hurt you one day.â
So we were still on that subject.
âMarvinâs been nothing but good to me.â
In the past, Victoria was clearly the one in control over this friendship, but not anymore. There used to b a time when I was jealous of her.
Jealous of her beauty, jealous of her loving personality, jealous of her going to law school while I had to drop out because I wasnât qualified enough.
âAnyway.â I breathed. âHow is the Danny Hernandez case going?â
âDid he say something about the Castilloâs?â
Victoria furrowed her brow. âI canât tell you that, Elena.â She said. âThatâs confidential information-
âSantiago Castillo.â I cut her off. âThe one who killed Stevie Maddens is Santiago Castillo, and Panther manipulated himâ¦or Pedro, whatever his name is.â
âWait, w-what?â Victoria whispered, leaning forward.
There was no good way to say this, so I just wanted to get it over with.
âBelieve it or not, I do care about my dad, and I want him to get his job back,â I spoke. âHe isnât completely twisted, and heâs right. Danny Hernandez is innocent.â
âHow do you-
âThe Castilloâs set him up to get Marvin out of prison and completely unrelated, but Stevie Maddens was corrupt.â I continued without any interruptions.
âWhat?â Victoria massaged her head. âYouâre saying too much. Please say it slowly from the beginning.â
âFine, listen.â
I told Victoria everything I knew, making sure not to leave out any details. There were still some things had to process. I couldnât believe that Panther would go this far to secure the family business for Cisco.
He used poor Santiago, who felt unsure about his position in the family, to get what he wanted to the point he even told him how to hold his gun. He managed to get rid of a corrupt agent and Marvin all at once.
âSo Anya had evidence against Puma?â
âGirl, itâs Panther.â
Victoria scoffed. âNot relevant to the story.â
âAre you a hundred percent sure about all of this?â
I reached for my clutch and showed her the stick. âPositive.â
âYouâre playing a really dangerous game, Elena. âVictoria grabbed the stick from my hand. âBut if I can find out whatâs on that stick, it might be a good way to get your dad off probation and to get my client out of prison.â
âDoes Marvin know-â
âNo.â I shook my head. âHe doesnât, and Tiago is a good personâ¦.so I donât want you to go after him.â
âLena, he killed someone-â
âSo did your client.â I reminded her. âThey are responsible for murdering Anya and many others, but youâre still defending his innocence, so donât blame me for protecting my friend.â
âYour friend?â Victoria chuckled. âIf Santiago is willing to testify, I can get him a really good deal.â
âWeâre talking about the murder of a DEA agent,â I spoke, irritated. Even though I was not worthy enough to become a lawyer, I was not completely stupid. âMarvin had a life sentence, and Danny Hernandez is looking at the same.â
âSo?â
âSo I want you to go after Panther and keep the rest out of it.â
âAnd then?â Victoria asked mockingly. âDonât you think the truth will eventually come out? Donât you think Panther will talk to defend himself?â
Good point.
âHe wonât,â I stated.
âWhy?â
âB-because he has a mom!â I blurted. âWe can threaten him with that and-â
âElena, you should hear yourself!â Victoria raised her voice. âYouâre even starting to sound like these people!â
Embarrassed, I lowered my head. I was starting to sound like the Castilloâs, which was not what I wanted Panther didnât only keep my secret to present Marvin a grand finale but also to keep me from talking. Someone like Panther thought everything through.
Marvin was bound to find out about my identity sooner or later, and no one could stop that. That was the choice I made when I decided to protect his legacy instead of our relationship.
âIâll just start with having my guy look at this stick, and we can continue from there.â Victoria woke me from my thoughts. âIâll also keep it from my dad for nowâ¦I donât want you to get hurt.â
âThereâs only one thing I canât seem to wrap my finger around.â Victoria pondered. âWhy would Panther want Stevie Maddens dead, and why would the Hernandez want to hurt Tiago or Anya and not Marvin?â
âD-do you think it was Panther?â
Victoria shrugged. âIt seems to me like he was smoothing some rough edges, so it would definitely make a lot more sense.â She spoke. âStevie Maddens seemed like a good man. Thereâs just no way someone like him was corrupt.â
I thought about Anyaâs words. It was still hard for me to believe as well. How could a guy who did everything according to the books be corrupt?
âYou were with Anya in her final moments, werenât you?â
âYes.â I gulped, remembering that dreadful event I desperately wanted to erase from my memories.
âWhat was she like?â Victoria questioned. âDid she say something or maybe did something?â
I closed my eyes and imagined myself hovering over Anyaâs near lifeless body. âShe gave me the key.â 1 began. âShe pointed to the man who shot her and said him.â
How could Iâve missed her surprised reaction when Tiago pulled off that manâs mask. Did she recognize him?
âShe also said Marvin, Victor, Tiago. I opened my eyes. âIn that exact order.â
Back then, I thought she meant I should give the key to Marvin, if not Victor, and as the last option Tiago.
âHow was Anyaâs bond with Victor?â Victoria pressured me. âDid she seem afraid of him?â
âI donât know, I barely know these people.â
âHow is your bond with Victor?â
âGood?â I guessed. âHeâs not like mean, but also not that welcoming.â I ranted. âI do know Marvin hates him.â
âDo you know why?â
âNo.â I took a breath. âIf I have to be honest, I donât think Victor got anything to do with this.â
âThat man worships the Castilloâs, so he wouldnât do anything to sabotage themâ¦not even Marvin.â
Victoria released a frustrated sigh. âDo you have Victorâs number?â
âWhat!â
âDo you have it, yes or no?â
âY-yes?â
âGive it.â She pulled my phone from my hand and unlocked it. The two of us were so close that we had exchanged our passcodes.
I remember telling Marvin there was no need for him to give me Victorâs number, but he wouldnât take no for an answer. Iâll put it in regardless, just in case.â He argued back.
âSo, thanks for your help. Victoria handed back my phone. âI send Victorâs number to myself.â
âFor?â
âDonât worry about it.â
I didnât want to worry about it, but she left me no choice. I knew I brought her into this, but I only did it because I wanted to see whatever was on that stick. This was not my intention.
âI know itâs none of my business.â Victoria looked at me. âBut you should enjoy Marvinâs company while you still can because once he finds out about you, itâs over-â
âYeah, I know.â I snarled. âThanks for the tip, though.â
Victoria smiled awkwardly. âJust looking out for you.â She placed her hand on my lap. âElena, youâve done more than enough.â
âButâ¦.â
âJust let me handle it from here, and Iâll keep you updated, okay?â
âOkay.â
