Chapter 339
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
Elena If someone told me I would be sitting on Victoriaâs big, luxurious and cozy sofa with the most unexpected group, I wouldâve laughed in their faces.
Somehow, dad, Alex, Victoria, Lucas, Victor, and I were all part of this secret complot and waiting for Victoria to play Anyaâs file which would take down Panther once and for all.
I knew how dad and Alex felt about sitting in a room with a Castillo-but at that moment, it was the least of his concerns. All he wanted to know was what exactly had happened to his friend-Stevie Maddens.
âIf this is the evidence Iâve been looking for. Fâll tell Marvin everything and come back home,â 1 announced. âVictor said heâd protect me-he also said itâs for the best.â
âYes.â Victor nodded uncomfortably, probably not wanting to be in the same room with a bunch of authorities who were not corrupt. âApparently, weâve got each otherâs backs.â
Dad and Alex shared a look. âThen what are we waiting for?â Dad spoke.
The Tape Four Years Ago At the table sat Tiago Castillo with Panther, who had just made a shocking request. âI know your family hasnât treated you right, but I will fix their mistakes for you.â
It was no shocker that Panther, who had been a great observer, had quickly noticed Tiagoâs disliking towards his brother.
âPanther, youâre asking me to betray my brother.â
âYes-yes, I am,â Panther confirmed, no shame whatsoever. âI see the way you look at him. I see how it breaks you whenever your parents have no shame admitting youâll never be like him.â He said. âI can see you hate himââ
âI do.â Tiago cut him off. âI hate him with every bone in my body, but heâs still my brother.â
âYour brother sees you as a burden. He doesnât want you around.â
âHow do you know?â
Panther showed him a smug smile, shrugging his shoulders. âBecause thatâs what heâs been telling everyone-and if you donât believe me, you can go around and ask.â He spoke. âWhat do you think will happen when he takes over Mario? Do you think youâll be safe?â
Tiago went silent, knowing it was not out of place for his brother to make such comments as Marvin had often shared his feelings.
âHe told me he would send you out of the country,â Panther said. âThat youâre soft, nothingâeven Victor is better than you.
Tiagoâs hands were shaking. He felt betrayed, angry and confused. He didnât want to leave and was determined to prevent it at all costs.âWhat do you want me to do?â
âThe deal with the Hernandez next week-I need you to be there.â
âDad and Marvin wonât let me.â
âDonât worry about Marvin. I got that dog right where I want him to be.â Panther clicked his tongue, shaking his head. âWho do you think has been pulling the strings?â
Tiago sighed. âWhatâs your big plan?â, âThe deal will fail, and there will be a raid.â
âHow do you know?â
+5 Bonus âI got this corrupt agent working for me. His name is Stevie Maddens.â Panther shared. âStevie has been trying to threaten to expose me, and Iâve been meaning to teach him a lesson.â
âW-what do I have to do with that?â
âI need you to harm him for me.â Panther requested as if it was an everyday thing. âJust a little-
nothing too bad.â
âWhy?â
âBecause I need Marvin to take the blame for you,â Panther told him. âHe cares just enough to play the hero-so he wouldnât let you take the blame.â
âI donât think this is a good idea.â Tiago swallowed his breath. âAnd Iâve never held a gun before..Marvin told dad he wouldnât allow it.â
âMarvin feels threatened and has been trying to hold you back, but I wonât.â Tiago felt uncomfortable hearing those words. âListen, all you have to do is make the shot, just harm Stevie a little-Iâll teach you how and where. Iâll personally escort Marvin behind bars.â
âFor how long?â
âLong enough for your father to see that you should be his rightful heir-but donât worry, itâll just be for a while.â
âEven if I do so-how could it help you?â
Panther laughed, throwing back his head. âWhen Cisco turns twenty-one, you will hand over everything to him.â
âCisco?â Tiago frowned. âWhy would you be interested in Cisco?â
âYouâre not the brightest.â Panther glared. âAre you really asking me why I would be interested in my son?â
Tiagoâs expression paled. âY-your son?â He stared at the man in front of him, hoping for at least an explanation as to why Panther would call Karinaâs kid his son.
Just when he had found the courage to ask further, he got interrupted by the sound on his phone.
âItâs Anya.â He got up, not wanting to miss her call. âI-1 h-have to take this.â
He walked out.
At that moment, one of Pantherâs hidden men stepped in and joined him at the table. âDo you really think this will work, boss?â He asked.
âHeâll eat his shit if Iâd ask him to,â Panther cackled. âThatâs just the way Tiago is.â
âWhat will you do when someone finds out?â
âKill them? Perhaps blame another family?â Panther tapped his chin, planning multiple escape routes.
âWho knows.â
Unaware, Panther grabbed a cloth and threw it over the hidden camera, causing the screen to blackout and muting every single sound.
-End-
The room fell silent. Our breathing was the only sound present.
âI recognize him.â I felt my throat dry as I moved the video backward and pointed to the man who had joined Panther. âThatâs Anyaâs killer.
She mustâve watched that footage a million times and used her last breath to tell me she knew her killer.
That man was no longer alive.
âAre you sure?â
âYes, Victor answered for me.
âSo Panther gives Tiago a task, manipulates a kid who has never held a gun before to kill a corrupt agent, knowing Marvin would protect his brother.â Dad summarized the situation. âBy chance, Marvin gets out, and Panther, who mustâve already suspected Anya knew something-purposely caused a brawl with the Hernandez, which gives him the perfect opportunity to kill her.â
Victor sighed, surprisingly appearing affected by the situation. âWhy didnât Anya tell us?â He balled his fisp âBecause she was protecting Tiago,â Victoria told him. âSomewhere along the way, she mustâve figured this could only end badly and was prepared to tell Marvin the truth.â
âPanther mustâve gotten a feeling and wanted to eliminate her before she could do so.â Lucas finished. âHe sent his right hand to do it and send him on a suicide mussion, knowing he wouldnât survive unless he killed everyone in the room.â
âWhat are you saying?â Alex asked.
âIâm saying Marvin, Tiago and Anya were supposed to die that evening.â Lucas explained further.
âPanther planned everything very carefully, used the Hernandez to distract Marvin Tori raised her brow, âWhy canât Tiago just speak up and confess?â
âHeâs out of it, on drugs, unstable-no one would believe him.â Victor spoke. âEven if he would come back sober-no one would believe himâ
Even I doubted him, so that was understandable.
I was too lost in my thoughts. I hadnât even noticed all heads were turned to me. With sweaty hands, I bit my lips. âWhat?â
âYouâre going to give him that stick, right?â Dadâs question sounded like a demand. âYou promised youâd give it to him and come back home right away.â
âI did.â A gulp left my mouth.
As badly as I wanted to end all of this, I had secretly hoped for Victoria to move slowly. Just slow enough. so I could take care of Marvin.
âElena?â Dad laughed nervously.
âI will keep that promise-but I just need some time.â
âWe donât have time.â Alex backed him up. âI know you think after you tell him who you are, Marvin will probably never want to see you again, and youâre rightâhe wouldnât. He said. âBut he will believe you just enough to see whatâs on that stick.â
âThereâs more.â Victoria scrolled through the files, beckoning all of us to lean forward. âNames of rats, information about the money he has stolen from the Castillos, plans, hideouts.â
âSweet, innocent Anya has been investigating him all this time,â Victor whispered, and I couldâve sworn I heard his voice crack.
âWhy didnât Panther tell Marvin aboutâ¦this?â Victoria stared, referring to me as the âthisâ situated.
âBecause he knew heâd flip once he found out.â Victor seemed to have an answer for everything.
âItâs just another way for him to keep Marvin in check in case he needs a distraction.â He spoke.
âDo what I tell you, or Iâll tell your dad the love of your life is an agentâs daughter.â
Dad buried his head between his hands. âElena-â
âI know, dad.â I clarified, accepting there was no way out. I would never want Panther to hold that kind of power over him. Better yet-I would rather have Marvin hate me. âI promiseâitâll be the first thing I do when I get back. You have my word.â
It wasnât easy, but it would be the best choice. The sooner Marvin could stop his friend, the better.
âAs for you, sir.â Lucas addressed dad. âMarvin will deal with Panther, Victor, and I will make sure of itâso you should also take a step back.â
Dad scoffed as a little child, turning the other way. Until now, he hadnât said a word about confirming Maddens being corrupt. Still, I could see the hurt and angry expression behind his eyes, probably blaming himself for not stopping his friend.
âIâll step back when I have my daughter back.â He made it clear.
âWell then!â Victor slammed both hands on his knees and got up from the sofa.
âIf Vicki-hands me the stick, I can bring back our saving grace so she can hand Marvin his present and pack her bags.â
âActually, i-itâs Tori!â Victoria held up her finger to correct him.
âThatâs what I said.â Victor patted my head. âAre you ready?â
Once again, I seemed to be the center of attention as all eyes were on me. I knew this day would come, but for some reason, I didnât feel prepared. I felt guilty, ashamed, afraid, and pathetic.
Not that that could change anything.
âIâm ready.â
