Chapter 44
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
I held the envelope against my chest while Christian tried to pull it from my hands. âDonât be ridiculous, jweâre having!â He forced me as I struggled.
It was a week after the sleepover and we had just come back from the doctors. I was so eager to find outbe having, but at the last minute, I decided that I did not want to know.
âNo, I want it to be a surprise!â I told him and pushed him away. Over the past week, our friendship had more and we were extremely close friendsâ you could even say we were best friends. My entire imaginecalm and quiet had completely disappeared and I could not imagine not hearing his voice. Unfortunatelyhim had definitely remained the same, even at times like these when he was being annoying.
âWhatâs the point? We waited for so longâ you canât change your mind last minute!â
âYes, I can,â I told him and released myself from his grip. âYou guys are just too adorable, please get marpouted. His twin sisters were in the middle of our disagreement, and I felt terrible that also they did not kfake relationship and were extremely fond of me. It also wasnât that difficult to notice the uncomfortableChristianâs faceâ probably due to him knowing about the crush I had.
After the doctorâs appointment, we went to his parentsâ house, because also they wanted to hear the new
âHow about a gender reveal?â Mia suddenly suggested while Christian and I gave each other an unsure lletâs make the annual Lamberti-Russo family reunion a gender reveal party.â Francesca had suddenly waleveryone went quiet.
It was the first time I had seen her ever since everything had happened, and seeing her still made me neryou want to sabotage her aga-â
âNo.â She cut off Christian and walked towards us while he immediately grabbed my hand in a protectiveserious Serena, I know we did not start off on the right footâ but I will not sabotage my own grandchildmade clear and I thought about the way she looked at her grandchildren.
âMaybe it will be a good thing.â I smiled, even though I was still a bit skepticalâ but Francesca was tryinwouldâve declined we wouldâve been back at square one once again.
âThatâs great. Last year grandma and grandpa were pushing you to get marriedâ and this year you are ehaving a baby.â Francesca held his hands and pulled him into a hug while Christian tried to push her awaabout their relationship suffering because of me, but despite everything Francesca still seemed to love hâIs everything alright here?â Lucio asked and entered the living room. âSerena.â He smiled at me.
âMomâs being weirdâ sheâs being nice.â Mia sighed and observed her momâs strange behavior. If Francwas already shocking to her own children, it was understandable that they were just as confused as I wasâSo what am I getting, granddaughterâ grandson?â Lucio walked over to me.
âMomâs turning the familygender reveal,â Stella told her dad.
âOh?â Lucio spoke surprised and held his hand on my stomach. âThen itâs a good opportunity for me to and focused his attention back on Christian. For the past week, Lucio had been calling me every day andto restore the bond we had once shared.
âChristian, we have things to discussâ are you coming?â Lucio spoke and walked off, expecting Christianbehind him. âAre you going to be okay?â He asked me and I nodded my head.
âMom, I swear to god if you-â
âIâm not going to do anything.â Francesca rolled her eyes and pushed Christian out of the living room. Twhy I did not mind being alone with her, was because Stella and Mia were also there.
âIâll take this.â Stella smiled and grabbed the envelope from my hands. âMom, Mia, and I have a lot of plaShe said and walked off with her sister before I could say anything else. Nice, so at the end they left me aFrancesca.
âCome, Iâll make you some tea.â She weirdly offered and led me to the kitchen. I sat down in silence and made me tea and placed the cup in front of me. Was it poisoned?
âI wonât poison you with a Lamberti inside you,â Francesca spoke as I took a sip. âMaybe after.â
I almost choked on my tea and looked at her with big eyes. âJust kidding, calm down.â She sighed and sa
âIâm trying Serena, really.â She scoffed.
âWhat do you have against me?â I gathered my courage to ask her. The last thing I wanted was to cause argument again, but most people liked me so when someone didnâtâ just like the girls at the club, it woâI donât want Christian to get distracted.â
âGio seems completely fine,â I mumbled and thought of different reasons other than my background forme. âGio does not have to lead an entire family in the future.â
âSo you wanted him to be alone forever?â I asked, making Francesca chuckle. âSerena, before you there wbut Iâve never seen him talk about anyone the way he talks about you.â
âYouâre a distraction, so yesâ perhaps I feel threatened.â She finally admitted and shrugged her shouldeBy me, the person who would be leaving soon? The person Christian rejected? If she only knew.
âOf course, Iâm carrying his baby.â I reminded her. If I did not have the babyâ Christian wouldnât even btime of his day and had made that very clear before. âSerena, from now on I will educate you.â She suddâWhy?â
âBecause you have a lot to learn.â Francesca said while I wondered what her intentions were. What on ealearn from her?
âSo you guys are buddy-buddy now?â Enzo walked into the kitchen and gave me a back hug. âMy squirrand pinched me in my cheeks.
âIs it true mom? About you turning the family reunion into a gender reveal?â Enzo asked and Francesca nhead. âYes, and it will be the biggest youâve ever seen.â She spoke while I shook my head at her idea. âSmsmall!â
âBut we have a big family, hunny. See, this is what I meant by educating you.â
She had a point. The last time we had dinner here, Christian had told me that all those people were not efamilyâ so I could only imagine.
âIâm glad you guys seem to beâ¦nice to each otherâ but Gio still hates her, he told me that yesterday.â Espoke and grabbed a drink from the fridge. âBut then again, who does he not hate.â
âOkay, I should go upstairsâ Iâm late.â He spoke right afterward and left the kitchen. âWell.â
Francesca aJudging by Enzoâs tone it was probably a normal thing to get hated by Gio so I decided to let it rest.
I got startled by the sound of loud footsteps and almost fell down losing my balance, making Francesca clumsy, what are we going to do with you.â She sighed and stood up to look who had entered the housemake yourself at homeâ¦like you did the last time.â
She walked out as I thought about how it had been the complete opposite. If anything I did not felt at ho
âBoy or girl?â I read Vinceâs text and send back a thinking emoji. Hanging out with Vince, Beau and Luis hdaily routine and today was the first time in a while that I didnât. Unlike Christianâ Vincenzo was not maand spend his free time with me.
âIt somehow turned into a gender reveal party!â I responded with a smile on my face. It would be good tbut after learning that the two families were not exactly best friendsâ I knew that I had to stay on my beâExcuse me?â A male voice spoke. I quickly put my phone away and looked at Emilio who was leaning agwith another guy. âHey!â I greeted him and made my way to him.
âI see youâre still wearing your necklace!â He said and pulled me into a warm hug. Even though I knew ththe mafia he had never occurred as dangerous to me and I had never feared him the way I had once fearwas as kind as he looked. âI am, I love it.â
âThatâs good, having a good bond with you might also help us in the future.â The other guy next to him always the business talk.â Emilio sighed.
âOh, my bad.â The other guy apologized and stuck out his hand. âMarcello.â
âSerena, itâs really nice to meet you.â I smiled back. âI really wanted to see you againâ¦but Christian told mbusy.â
âThatâs strange, I never told him that.â Emilio frowned his eyebrows while Marcello laughed. âHe probabwere going to steal her away from him.â He winked at me.
âThat must be it.â Emilio agreed. âPlease walk with us, my father would like to meet you.â He grabbed mypulled me towards the living room. There was a man around Lucioâs age sitting on the sofa and had a coFrancesca.
âDad, look!â Emilio told the man who had immediately stood up and walked to me with big eyes, pushingot anxious and looked around the room, trying to avoid his eyes but his gaze kept following me.
âAngelicaâ¦â He whispered. âHuh?â I asked, but he shook his head. âNo itâs just your eyes, you look so-âbreath.
âItâs really nice to meet you, Iâve been wanting to meet you for a long time nowâ Christian is like family.into a warm hug. Hugging the Alfonzoâs felt comfortable and almost just like hugging my teddy bear. âNIâm Serena.â I hugged him back and looked at Francesca who rolled her eyes at me.
That woman was conâMatteo Alfonzo.â The man introduced himself and pulled back. âI told you so dad, Iâm not crazy.â Emiliohis dad and inspected me while I gave him a questioning look.
âUh, I told him about you being an absolute beauty.â He explained himself as I shyly nodded my head. âHyou?â
âTwenty-one?â I spoke confused as to why he would be asking me about my age. Matteoâs widened his his warm hand on my cheek. âYou came to us like a blessing.â He said, and I couldnât help but notice thebehind his eyes.
âSerena.â I heard Christianâs voice as he came down from the stairs and grabbed my hand to take a step and Enzo followed behind him. âI havenât seen you in a long time.â Matteo gave him a smile which he ha âI will come by more often, sir,â Christian said and wrapped his arm around my shoulder. A week ago I wofainted, but by now it was something I was used to. Him being touchy and it not meaning anything. âPleSerena with you.â
âI didnât know you would be here.â Lucio walked towards the man and hugged him. Just as I had heard, appeared to be extremely close. âI wouldnât, but after hearing Serena was here I came right away. If I didbetter I would say you didnât want me to meet her.â He laughed at Lucio who denied his accusation.
âYes, you are always welcome Christianâ Iâll make time for you, always.â Emilio agreed and placed a hanshoulder before turning to me. âYou see that cold look on his face? I liked him better when he was a baband energeticâyou shouldâve seen him running around in his poopy diapers.â

âMom is always asking for youâ¦you should really visit.â Marcello said, while I could read a worried look oâHow is she doing?â He asked and Marcello shrugged his shoulders. âIt shifts a lot, one day sheâs fineâshe isnât.â
âTell her Iâll let the twins visit her very soon.â Lucio placed his hand on his shoulder.
âNo sad talk todayâ¦I want to get to know Serena better.â Matteo who had been staring at me the entire sat on the sofa again.
For the rest of the day, we had many conversations and I was glad to know that I had found people like tpeople who I bonded with, without even having to try.
But as curious as I was, I knew there was more to the Alfonzoâsâ and it started with the name Matteo haAngelica.
And to find out about this person I could ask the person who I always ran to, Vincenzo
