Chapter 48
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
It was the day after I had found out about the baby picture and no matter how much Iâd call or text Vincnot answer.
I was getting anxious since Christian wasnât hereâ and even considered asking Olivia, Vincenzoâs addrescould not take it anymore.
âAre you sure youâre not going to eat anything?â Emmanuella who had returned asked and I shook my hstaring at my phone. The last person I had texted was Beau, and I hoped he would reply.
âNo, Iâm good thanks,â I reassured her. âYes, but how about the baby?â She asked, and pushed the plate directionâ forcing me to eat. Not in the mood to talk to her anymore, I had accepted the plate and startâEmmanuella, youâve been in this family for a long time, right?â I asked her as she nodded her head. âYesâDo you know the Alfonzoâs?â I asked her. Emmanuella sat down on the opposite side of me. âYes, of couâ theyâve been a family friend for ages. It all started with Christianâs grandfatherâ Franco Lamberti andâ Pedro Alfonzo.â
âWhat about their children?â I tried to keep the conversation going. I was going to find out answers aboone way or another.
âHmm, there is the oldestâ Emilio and after that Marcello, and after Marcello they had Carmen and LucaâDid they ever give up a child for adoption?â I jumped straight to it and tried to read the expression on Eface. âWhy that sudden question? Have you heard about what Fabio Garcia did?â
âVincenzoâs dad?â I asked and she nodded her head. I had to play my cards right. âUh yeah, but I forgotâdo again?â I played along. I felt bad for having to use Emmanuella like this, but I had to find out the truthâItâs not what he did, itâs what they all done. Years ago there was an order to burn down a houseâ but uFabioâs pregnant wife and son died in that fire. No one knew they were still in that house.â Emmanuella sâHe was the one who put out the order, but he needed someone to blame and at the end of the day theLambertiâs men had done it, so they had to pay.â
âHow did they pay?â I wondered and finally felt like I was getting somewhere. The look on Emmanuellaâsthat she did not want to talk about it anymore. âEmmanuella, please,â I begged her.
âAlright then.â
âAt that time Lina Alfonzo was pregnant, Fabio gave them two options, either hand over a childâ or go Emmanuella sighed. âW-war?â I asked as she nodded her head.
âYes, Lita gave away her baby boyâ because he was a boy she had hoped Fabio would have shown him fast as she gave the baby, he had disappeared and god knows how that child suffered.â
So it was a boy?
Then who was Angelica?
âEven then Christian and Vincenzo remained friends,â I spoke to myself. âYes, sacrificing one child to protprevent a war was unfortunately the safest at the time. All the families make up one big family, so just imhappens when someone risks a war for a baby.â Emmanuella explained. âThey had no choice or they woueveryone against them.â
âAnyway, after that Lita gave birth to two more children, Carmen and Lucasâ but she got depressed andgiving away her son. She wouldâve gone to war for her baby, but Matteo at that time made that decisionand not out his heart.â She sighed.
âAnd we are sure the baby was a boy?â I asked Emmanuella. All of this did not make sense, as far as I waswas definitely not a boy. âPositive, it was a boy.â
âAnd who is Angelica?â I asked and saw how Emmanuellaâs went into deep thoughts. âI have no idea, whasking?â She asked, but just by her reaction, I knew that she could not help me anymore. L
Perhaps Angelica was another baby they gave away. Matteo Alfonzo calling out for Angelica sounded likout for his daughter.
âNo one, I heard Matteo mention that name onceâ donât mind me.â I smiled at her. At that moment myand I saw that I had received a text from Beau.
He had sent me a location with simple instructions. âPlease get here as soon as possible. Donât tell anyonI looked at Emmanuella who had her back turned to me and said my goodbyes before going to my roomBeau wanted to meet me at was at a park near the mansion.
âEmmanuella, Iâm just going for a quick walk!â I announced and left the mansion. âNo drive today?â
Vernshook my head. My eyes landed on the same grey van which had been following me ever since Christianit had to be one of his men.
I managed to sneak out the gates without the van noticing me and made my way over to the park wheresitting on a bench.
âIf Iâm dead, this was my last location and I was with Beau, the one who was stalking meâ I texted Luna anphone.
âBeau,â I called out and walked towards him, but made sure to keep my distance. âSerena, we have to tatime!â He spoke and tried to step forward, but I took a step back.
âI know youâve been stalking me, please tell me why you have been sticking your nose into my baby pictyouâve been running circles at the clubâ asking about me!â I demanded an answer and saw how his facâI can explain, but you have to listenâ I donât have long!â He said but I shook my head, refusing to listendonât, so tell me what the hell is going on!â
âYou might be in danger.â
âW-what do you mean? Whereâs Vincenzo and why isnât he picking up his phone?â I asked Beau.
He graand looked in my eyes with a pleading look. âSerena listen, the Canada thing was a lie-â
âYouâre not from Canada?â
âListen!â He interrupted me and squeezed my hand. âYes I was brought here from Canadaâ but before tfrom the moment I met you I knew there was somethingâ¦â
âW-what are you trying to say?â I whispered and saw him take a deep breath. âSerena, although youâre pthink youâre randomly hereâ for the past few months I have been looking for someone and I think you He whispered back and looked around to see if anyone heard us.
âW-who? Let go of me!â I told him, shocked at his changed behavior. âMy twin.â He said as I couldnât hehis weird explanation. Twin?
âWhat the hell are you talking about!â I tried to get away from him, but his grip around my wrist was firmother hand he grabbed a picture from his suit jacket. âWe donât have long, heâll be back soon but look!âpicture into my hands.
My heart almost dropped when I saw a baby who was pretty much identical to the baby in my childhoodeven had the same custom made blanket, cuddled up to another baby.
Adrián and Angelica
âW-what, where did you get this from?â I asked and held the bench for support as I tried to catch my brea game?
âI stole it from Vincenzoâs father, Fabio Garciaâs office,â Beau spoke. âThe man who made my life miserabknow why!â
âChristian is not the saint you think he is and Vincenzo isnât either!â
âW-what?â I asked again, on the verge of fainting at all the sudden news I was receiving. âA long time aghappened between the Alfonzoâs, the Lam-â
âYes, I know!â I interrupted him to not waste any more time than we already didnât have.
âIâm sure you trust Christianâ but he knew who your birth parents are and didnât tell you a thing. He pudanger just by being here!â
âAnd why would that be?â I asked.
âDoes Vincenzo..?â
âNo he doesnât, and no one knows about me, but someone gave Fabio a lead and now he knows that yoâFabio?â I asked and looked at Beau who had raised his sleeve. In shock, I stared at the purple bruises onâOh myâ¦Beau, did they do this to you?â
âFabio didâ although Vincenzo is innocent, you canât hang around him anymore. The only reason he cabecause Fabio gave me another name and never told anyone about my true identity. I was the price for emistakeâ Iâm safe for now because I work for Fabio and he thinks that I do not know who I am.â Beau trget through to me.
âBut you? Vincenzoâs ignoring you because he knows! Although you had nothing to do with all of this, hbrother died in that fireâ he will never forgive you!â Beau yelled in my face.
Christian knewâ¦
I thought about Christian and his sudden decision to not help me anymore after I had told him about myhad hated him, did not want to be around himâ declined the checks he had sent me, and in a way, everadding up, but Christian why would he lie to me?
I had opened up to him about my true feelings while he wiped my tears. He knew how desperate I was aknow my parents, I cried in his arms while he comforted meâ so unless he was the devil there was no siwouldnâtâ¦
There had to be a reason.
I fell in love with him and he betrayed me.
Lucioâ¦
He had hired me, always gave me way more attention than the other girlsâ visited me every week, triedgetting another job. It was all so he could wash away his own guilt.
âThe Alfonzoâs, do they know?â I asked but Beau shook his head. âNo, Iâve heard ourâ¦birth motherâ¦fell iand regrets her decision, if they knew we wouldnât be living like this.â He told me.
I thought about the butterfly-shaped necklace which Emilio had given me. It was not a lookalike, it was tChristian asked me about the necklace and made a damn fool out of me while he knew all along.
This must be a lie, this must be a prank.
âOne adviceâ burn that ring, save your baby, and come with me now, Iâll get you out of here before FabWe only have each other, Iâll protect you.â Beau stuck out his hand.
I looked at his hand.
His offer seemed so tempting, but was I really capable of dropping the life I had?
Was I ready to let go of Christian?
