Chapter 63
His Promise: The Mafia’s Babies
Christian
âYouâre what?â Christian chuckled in disbelief and looked at Lucio, hoping heâd say it was all a joke, but iLucio observed the reactions on his sonâs faces and took a deep breath. âIâm sickâ¦Iâm dying.â
He repeatâStage four lung cancerâ¦Iâm dying.â He spoke once again, looking right into Christianâs eyes. âI-I donât ustuttered.
Lucio took a deep breath and looked at Gioâs pained expression before his head turned towards Enzo.
âYou not getting along is enough to kill meâ¦but I donât want to leave like this.â He raised his voice at Enztears running down his face.
âWhy would you tell us this right now?â Gio spoke while Christian felt as if his own life had ended upon hâCanât you get treatment?â He stammered as Lucio shook his head. âI canât.â
âHow long beforeâ¦â Gio tried to hide his tears. âCould be weeks, months, could be yearsâbut we must the worst.â Lucio sighed.
âI havenât told anyone other than grandpa, not your momâand absolutely not your sisters, so keep it toâWhy would you say this now!â Christian slammed his fist on his desk.
âDonât,â Lucio tried to calm his nerves, but Christian was not having it.
âWhy would you do this to me? Why would you say this to me right now?â
âBecause I need you to be ready!â Lucio yelled out, making him stop talking.
âBecause I need you to be ready to take overâand I need your brothers to remain by your side, both of Enzo a look.
âTrying to avoid a war with Fabio, forgiving the Salaâs, making sure you are respectedâeverything Iâve dbecause Iâm weak, but because I want you to be powerful!â
âThis doesnât make sense,â Christian whispered with clenched fists.
âChristian, calm down,â Gio spoke, only to get his hand pushed away. âChristian, we donât have time for asit down and listen!â Lucio yelled.
Christian took a deep breath and looked from Enzo and Gio back to his father.
âFirst tell me, tell me whatâs going on between the three of you so I can fix it,â Lucio asked.
In one moment, Christianâs decision to tell Lucio the truth had fallen apart. In that one moment, he had dEnzo. âTell me the truth.â
âThe truth?â Christian repeated as the three brothers all looked at each other. Gio slightly shook his headwhile Enzo had a troubled expression on his face.
âThe truth is that youâve pushed us so hard, that thereâs nothing left to restore.â Christian closed his eyeâThis thing Iâve created between the three of you, it has to stop.â Lucioâs voice cracked as Christian obeyewishes and sat back down again.
âIâm sorry for putting the three of you up against each other. I had done what my father had once done tand I regret it every single day.â Lucio spoke. âThe first time I cried for my big brother was when he took and asked me to take care of his sons while he passed away in my arms.â
Christian face softened as he thought about Johnny, Luca, and everything they had gone through. If anytprobably had it worse. Their father died and they were raised by their mother and the uncle they had thodespised. But they pushed through because he took a bullet for Lucio, and Johnny had been the only san
Lucio looked at his three sons with a desperate look on his face. âI donât ever want that for any of you, anhere anymoreâ¦I need the three of you to get along, so whatever this isâit ends now.â
âEnzo,â Lucio called out his name. All he felt was regret for the way he had neglected him. Ever since a yomade Gio, the eldestâand Christian, the youngest, compete while Enzo suffered the most and got negleâI canât go back in time and fix my mistakes, but for everything I have done till nowâplease forgive me. Fnot being a good father and forgive me for pushing you so far that you canât take it anymore.â
âDad,â Enzo whispered, while Christian looked down at his clenched fists. âCanât you get any treatment, wdoctorââ Christian who was still in denial started.
âChristian,â Gio stopped him from talking. âIâm sure dad has done everything in his power to get better, owouldnât even have told us thisâso please work along.â
For the first time in a long while, Christian listened to his older brother and nodded his head before he tuattention back onto his father.
He could not believe that he had been going around, calling his father weakâwhile there was more goinknow whether he wanted to cry, blame him for not telling them, run outâso all he could do was keep hiâEnzo, everything you went throughâit was because of me, and Iâm so sorry,â Lucio apologized and focuChristian.
âBut when Iâm gone, Christian will need your help, you need to stand by himâprotect him, love him.â
What protection? Christian thought.
He looked at his fatherâs exhausted expression and did not want to put him through any more pain than already had. âEnzo, listen.â
Enzo turned to Christian, who was doing his very best not to look into his eyes. âEverything that has hapnowâ¦letâs forget it and move on.â He spoke through gritted teeth. He did not agree with it, but he wouldfatherâs condition on purpose.
âI agree.â Enzo barely whispered.
Forgiving Enzo was the last thing he wanted to do. He put the babyâs life in danger and told him so manywhich were spoken from his heartâbut if it would calm down his father, so be it.
For Christian, the worst thing wouldâve probably been the fact that he had sent everyone a letter, except not feel sorry at all?
âThank you.â Lucio had a relieved smile on his face.
âWhen I goâ¦whenever that time may be. I want you to start clean and I donât want you to deal with any oto remain friendly with Fabio wouldâve been the safest way, but now that the circumstances have changechoice but to fight back.â
âStarting next week, we will discuss our strategy and Iâm putting Christian as well as grandpa back in chaannounced, making all the three bothers look up in surprise. âIâm weakâ¦â
âDad, donât worryâit will all be okay.â Christian tried to reassure him, but Lucio shook his head. âIâm scayou were ready, but you still not being able to make key decisions for the greater causeââ
âKey decisions?â Christian chuckled in disbelief. âI get that youâre sick, but are we calling Serena and the decisions?â
âThatâs not what I meant.â Lucio gulped. âWhat I mean is that youâre being selfish right nââ
âWhy? Because I donât want to send Serena who is very pregnant by the way, to a safe house!â
Christian ysurprised by his own tone. âDad, do not stress yourself over me, Iâll figure it out.â He spoke in a calmer toâHow can you ask me not to stress out, when you wonât even follow my instructions?â Lucio wondered.
âPlease work along, weâll provide her with the best care, bring her companyâa really good doctorâ¦â
Christian sighed at his fatherâs words and stared at Gio. The person who was known to be immature was being mature. In the past Christian mightâve thought this was all just some sort of game his brother was knew that Gio had changed.
He had turned into a reliable, kind brother. He had turned into a brother who was a threat to his positionheir, Christian never cared for until now.
Christian took a deep breath as he thought about the probable consequences if he would not send Serehouse. All of the families would agree with his dad and call him selfish, they would vote him out as the hto push Gio, who had become reliable, insteadâbut deep down Christian couldnât do that to Serena. Buto.
âIâll follow your instructions, and Iâll send Serena to the safe house.â Christian suddenly spoke. Lucio couldnot what he wanted, but just like Christian, Lucio knew about the consequencesâalthough he wouldâve in front of the two brothers. According to Lucio, the one who could succeed him could only be Christian âThis will help you in the future, you know that.â He told him. All he wanted was to leave on a good noteAfter the meeting, Christian did not know how fast to storm out of the office and had planned on leavingsaying another word.
âChristian, wait!â He heard Enzoâs call out. Christian let out an annoyed sigh and rolled his eyes before hebrother. This was not what he had in mind. âWhat?â
âI just wanted to thank you forâ¦not saying anything,â Enzo spoke with his head down.
âThank me?â Christian furrowed his eyebrows. âThe only reason why I havenât said anything is that the lasneed right now is dad dropping dead next week, so donât thank me.â He pushed past him and stormed d
With a pit in his stomach, he drove back home and made his way to the kitchen. He opened the cabinet bottle of liquor and a glass. âStressed day?â Marc walked in.
âYou waited for me?â Christian asked and poured himself a glass. âYes, Serena went to sleep but we did ashopping. She bought some sparkly pink paint, a crib, and all of that. Your girl knows how to shop.â He yChristian smacked his glass down on the counter, letting a bit of liquor spill in the process. âShe could bayesterday, so what kind of game is she playing?â
âGame? Sheâs just trying to make the best out of the situation.â Marc stuck up for Serena.
âMake the best out of the situation?â Christian spoke in surprise. âWeâre all worrying for her fucking life to buy some sparkly pink paint to make the best out of the fucking situation?â He raised his voice at Marforward. âAnd you let her?â
âChristian, you need some restâI know people call us a married couple, but Iâm not doing this with you.already turned around to walk away. âAnd leave Serena alone too, the last thing she needs right now is abecause while sheâs trying to keep it together, youâre out here acting like some pussy boy.â
He finished bwalked out and slammed the door behind him.
Christian let out an aggressive yell and drank straight out of the bottle until the bottle was half empty beway upstairs. He slammed open the room door and couldnât be more annoyed by Serena who was leaninheadboard, with her tablet in her hands, wearing headphones, eating snacks as she laughed at the screeâOh hey, Christian!â She laughed as she looked up, but it was not long until she had realized that he wasmood.
